HELSINKI, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- It was the afternoon of Feb. 12 local time in the Confucius Institute classroom at the downtown University of Helsinki. To celebrate the "Year of the Tiger," they staged a string of performances to share their happiness.The performances were quite Chinese and included small dramas, Chinese folk songs, poems from the Tang and Song dynasties, and Taichi.Apparently, their love of the traditional Chinese culture simmered into the music and poetry. Additionally, the students also brilliantly displayed their achievements in learning the Chinese language.Perhaps the most symbolic icon of the Spring festival is the dumpling, which would certainly feed the hunger of the students at the Confucius Institute for both food and knowledge.Juhani Riisio, a student at the University of Helsinki, called the dumplings "quite good to taste."The students knew that dumplings are always served during the Chinese Lunar New Year holidays, but making the food was a new challenge for them.The first time doing anything is never easy. However, it could be read from the students' actions and faces that they were doing their best.It seemed that they were making the dumplings as carefully and confidently as they were at learning Chinese.Hard work and eagerness to learn usually pays off. The students were soon able to made decent looking dumplings, though the taste was still waiting to be examined.As the experimental dumplings were cooked and served, delicious smells seemed to stuff the room. Anyone who wanted to know the results of the students' efforts could see nothing but gladness and comfort from the smiles of both teachers and students.The making of a dumpling may take only a couple of hours to learn but a culture could take a lifetime to appreciate. Small and symbolic as the little dumplings are, they help to shorten the distance between the western world and China, facilitating communications amongst different peoples. By learning from each other, it is certain that our tomorrows would be defined by mutual understandings instead of mistrust.

BEIJING, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- China's Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi clarified China's stance on Internet management and emphasized Internet is open and active in China when meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, a spokesman of China's Foreign Ministry said Friday.Spokesman Ma Zhaoxu made the remarks in response to a question on whether Yang and Clinton discussed the Google case during their meeting on the sidelines of an international conference on Afghanistan in London."Yang stressed that Internet in China is open and active," said Ma.Chinese people enjoyed adequate freedom of speech in line with the law and have access to various kinds of information, which is an important reason why Chinese people unswervingly follow the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics, Ma said."Yang said promoting the development of the Internet is our consistent policy," said Ma.Ma added that China has its own domestic situation and cultural tradition, and it accords with the world's common practice that China regulates the Internet according to its laws and policies."China advocates severely fighting against hacking through beefing up international cooperation, so as to protect Internet safety and citizens' privacy in accordance with the law," Ma said.According to the Internet Society of China, the number of cyber attacks from abroad saw a year-on-year increase of 148 percent in 2008.

XI'AN, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- A high-speed railway linking central China city Zhengzhou and northwestern city Xi'an, went into operation Saturday.The 505-km Zhengzhou-Xi'an high-speed railway, the first of its kind in central and western China, cut the travel time between the two cities from former more than six hours to less than two hours, said local railway authorities Saturday.The first train left Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi Province, at 10:50 a.m. and arrived at Zhengzhou, capital of Henan Province, at 1:15 p.m., said Long Jing, head of the Xi'an Railway Bureau. With a speed of 350 kilometers per hour, the high-speed Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) train coded G2004 is about to leave Xi'an for Zhengzhou in Xi'an Railway Station, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, on Feb. 6, 2010.The train traveled at 350 kilometers per hour, said Long. A total of 14 trains would be traveling between Zhengzhou and Xi'an everyday, said Long.The first train from Zhengzhou to Xi'an departed from Zhengzhou at 11:25 a.m. and arrived at Xi'an at 2:01 p.m., said Niu Jianfeng, spokesman of the Zhengzhou Railway Bureau.The Zhengzhou-Xi'an high-speed railway, included in the country's "Mid- and long-term railway network plan", has been built since Sept. 25, 2005, with a total investment of about 35.31 billion yuan (5.17 billion U.S. dollars), said Niu. With a speed of 350 kilometers per hour, a high-speed Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) train is on test operation en route from Xi'an to Zhengzhou, in Tongguan, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, on Feb. 4, 2010."The Zhengzhou-Xi'an high-speed railway will meet the growing demand of of passenger and cargo transportation in central and western China, and help promote local development," said Wang Yongping, spokesman of the Ministry of Railways.Henan is one of the major grain producers of China and an emerging economic and industrial powerhouse. This most populous province in China is also a major tourist attraction with a great number of sites of historical and cultural interests. Shaanxi boasts rich cultural resources and is endowed with rich natural resources such as coal, petroluem, and natural gas.The country's total railway coverage will be more than 110,000 kilometers by 2012 and 120,000 kilometers by 2020, according to the "Mid- and long-term railway network plan"."By 2012, it will take less than eight hours to travel by train from Beijing to most provincial capitals in China," said Long.

BEIJING, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese mainland held ceremonies Friday commemorating the 85th anniversary of the death of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the forerunner of the anti-feudalism revolution in China.In Beijing, a ceremony was held in Zhongshan Park, a park named after Dr. Sun.Abdul'ahat Abdulrixit, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China's top political advisory body, Zhou Tienong, chairman of the Central Committee of the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang (RCCK), Lou Zhihao, deputy head of the United Front Work Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, and Beijing Vice-Mayoress Cheng Hong placed flower baskets at the foot of a statue of Sun Yat-sen.The ceremony was presided over by Li Wuwei, vice chairman of the Central Committee of the RCCK, and was joined by more than 200 people including representatives from the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature.Local officials and citizens in east China's Jiangsu Province marked the day at the mausoleum of Dr. Sun in Nanjing, capital city of Jiangsu, honoring his spirit and achievements in the revolution and calling for national reunification.In Shanghai, books were published about Dr. Sun and his wife, Soong Ching Ling, former Chinese Honorary President, commemorating his death.A local official at the Shanghai ceremony held in the former residence of Dr. Sun, said he hoped that the books would promote patriotism among the public, especially the youth.Dr. Sun was born in 1866 and died in 1925. He is known to the Chinese as a "great revolutionary and statesman" who fought against feudalism and imperialist aggression and for the independence and freedom of the Chinese people. Memorial ceremonies are held every year on the date of his death around the nation.
