SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The 10-day Sturgis motorcycle rally held in August led to more than 266,000 new coronavirus cases, according to a new study from San Diego State University.The study, released this week, says upwards of 460,000 people converged on Sturgis, a South Dakota city of 7,000, causing a bump in Coronavirus infections across the US. "Large crowds, coupled with minimal mask-wearing and social distancing by attendees, raised concerns that this event could serve as a COVID-19 'super spreader,'" said the study, which did conclude that the rally was a super spreader event.Researchers from San Diego State's Center for Health Economics and Policy Study used anonymized cell phone data to track where attendees came from, then traced it back to their counties. They found that the counties that had the highest numbers of Sturgis attendees saw a 7% to 12% increase in coronavirus cases. The study also said that CDC data shows that cases in Meade County, South Dakota, where the rally is held, increased 6 to 7 cases per 1,000 population a month after the event started. Descriptive evidence suggests these effects may be muted in states with stricter mitigation policies (i.e., restrictions on bar/restaurant openings, mask-wearing mandates)," the study says.In all, the study says that led to more than 266,000 new COVID-19 cases nationwide.The study says these cases accounted for an additional .2 billion in health costs, enough to pay each attendee ,000 not to have attended the rally. But you might think twice about overspending on Black Friday or Cyber Monday when you take a closer look at the FIRE movement to help you make it in San Diego. Amon Browning and his wife Christina were recently featured on ABC News. The San Francisco couple just retired, and they’re only 40 years old. “I was making ,000 a year, and Christina was making about ,000 a year,” says Amon Browning. In just eight years, they managed to save million by investing 70 percent of their income through a method called FIRE, which is short for Financial Independence, Retire Early. Mah is the Community Liaison for a local FIRE Chapter in San Diego called Choose FI, as in Financial Independence. They gathered to learn what it takes, mostly significant financial sacrifices, to retire early. “The American Dream is getting a college degree, and this job, and this white picket fence. But all of that has this huge debt behind it,” claims a woman interviewed for the documentary.The goal of the film is to get people thinking about where they spend their money. “The consumerism culture is harmful. It really hurts people,” says another man as video of a massive Black Friday rush appears on the big screen.Ultimately, the documentary portrays how consumerism and marketing place so many Americans on the edge of bankruptcy. “We are spending money we don’t have to buy things we don’t need to impress people we don’t know,” says another man in the documentary in an ominous tone. Nearly half, 44 percent, have credit card debt, and only 38 percent have an emergency fund. Those in the Choose FI community are the opposite. “People in the FI Community have a savings rates upwards of 40 percent,” says Mah. Meaning nearly half of their income is going into savings. Everyone in the movement is different in their quest to save and retire early; there’s no one specific way to do it. “Some things that most people cut: really expensive cable, really expensive phone bills, streaming services,” adds Mah. For others, it’s more drastic, like downsizing a house or giving up an expensive car for a used one. Everything is always going to be out of your control.”“Even if I don’t reach financial independence, retire early, I think I will be better for trying than not to try at all,” says Mah. The FIRE movement takes a great deal of sacrifice. To be successful like the Brownings, you must reduce spending, pay off your debts, and maximize your savings by setting aside 40 to 60 percent of your income. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The City of San Diego is working to transform Little Italy into an outdoor dining experience. They're streamlining the process for shops and restaurants to serve more customers while promoting social distancing under a new outdoor dining and shopping proposal.Marla Encinas had to close her Little Italy clothing boutique, Valmare, for two months. "We tried to do online selling but its definitely not the same," said Encinas. But, for any business, fewer customers often means less revenue. The city of San Diego is trying to change that. "They’ll be allowed to maximize outdoor space to allow physical distancing and expand the number of customers they can serve," said Faulconer. "I would love to bring out summer stuff because the weather is so nice, people are starting to slowly go out."Last Saturday, Little Italy had their first al-fresco dining event on India Street. By adding retail shops in the mix, more businesses will get a much-needed chance to bounce back from Covid-19. "It's going to be very fun," said Encinas. "You’re going to have a bunch of different vendors, it's going to be different than your typical shopping experience."Businesses can apply for the outdoor dining permits on the city's website. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The California Coastal Commission Wednesday signed off on a demonstration of the lighting project that would illuminate pillars of the Coronado Bay Bridge.The project will include installing lights along four pillars of the bridge, which will be tested during one week in June. Following the test, an environmental impact study will be conducted.The tests are part of a larger effort for a proposed artist-designed lighting project that would span 30 pillars of the 2.12-mile bridge. The Port of San Diego is trying to raise between - million to complete the project by 2022.At completion, the Port hopes to have a finished lighting display by artist Peter Fink, meant to serve as a gateway to the region and in a variety of scenarios using its programmable LED displays.
