VLADIVOSTOK, Russia, March 21 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping Sunday encouraged Chinese and Russian youths to make joint efforts in helping push forward the friendly bilateral ties.Xi, during his visit to the Confucius Institute of Far Eastern National University here, called on youths of the two countries to realize the aim with their youthful passion and wisdom.At the institute, which was founded in 2006, Xi watched an exhibition showing its achievement, attended a Chinese calligraphy lesson taken by Russian students, and inaugurated a bronze statue of Confucius.Xi also paid a visit to the "Ocean" all Russia children's center, where hundreds of Chinese pupils and middle-school students, victims of a devastating major earthquake in 2008, had attended a rehabilitation program.The massive earthquake struck southwestern China's Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces on May 12, 2008, leaving some 70,000 people dead and 18,000 others missing.Xi recalled that the Russian government and people provided timely assistance to victims of the quake and President Dmitry Medvedev later invited more than 1,500 Chinese pupils and middle-school students from the quake-hit areas to Russia for rehabilitation.The Chinese vice president conveyed the sincere greetings and best wishes of these Chinese children to their Russian peers in the center, and, on behalf of the Chinese government and people, expressed his heartfelt thanks to the staff of the center.Xi said Chinese and Russian youths are the builders and successors of the future undertaking of the Sino-Russia friendship.He said the "Year of Chinese Language" would open in Russia in several days, expressing his hope that Russian youths would actively take part in related activities, and learn Chinese language, history and culture.Xi arrived in Vladivostok Saturday for a five-day official visit to Russia.

BEIJING, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Most of the melamine-tainted milk products recently resurfacing in China have been recalled and destroyed, and none has been put into market or exported, the nation's food safety office said Friday."Due to early discovery and timely check, as of now, most of the tainted milk products have been recalled and destroyed, and none has entered the market or been exported," said the National Food Safety Rectification Office in a statement.Media reports said melamine-tainted dairy products have resurfaced in several Chinese provinces. Explaining why such cases could happen, the office said some producing and processing companies didn't fulfil the responsibilities for food safety and some violators hid tainted milk products or fabricated test reports to dodge inspections.The office urged related departments at all levels to thoroughly investigate the new cases and severely punish violators.In 2008, milk laced with melamine led to the deaths of six babies and sickened 300,000 others who had been fed with baby formula made from tainted milk. NICOSIA, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi expressed his solemn position on the U.S. arms sales to Taiwan here Saturday, urging the U.S. to stop selling weapons to the Chinese province.Yang, who is paying an official visit to Cyprus, said in disregard of strong opposition and repeated protest from China, the U.S. administration flagrantly announced its plan to sell the weapons to Taiwan worth about 6.4 billion dollars.Such a move is gravely against the three joint communiques between China and the United States, especially the "Aug. 17" communique, Yang said, adding that it constitutes crude interference in China's internal affairs, and harms China's national security and peaceful reunification efforts.China firmly opposes such a move which runs counter to the U.S. commitment to support the peaceful growth of the cross-Strait relations, he said.The Chinese foreign minister urged the U.S. side to adopt a serious attitude towards the Chinese position, earnestly respect China's core interests and major concerns, revoke immediately the erroneous decision on the arms sales to Taiwan and stop selling weapons so as not to undermine the China-U.S. relations.Yang Jiechi said China has repeatedly stated its position on the U.S. arms sales to Taiwan. BEIJING, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- China's Education Ministry on Sunday warned students considering studying overseas against Australian schools run by the GEOS group after more than 40 Chinese students were left stranded with the group's collapse.More than 2,300 students in GEOS group schools across Australia were affected after the college closures. The schools were scattered across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Cairns.GEOS is a Japanese company which owns hundreds of colleges around the world. The GEOS group has run out of money for its Australian colleges,according to Australian media reports.Chinese embassies and consulates in Australia are negotiating with local authorities to settle the issue to safeguard students' legitimate rights.The Education Ministry has drawn up a recommendation list of nearly 15,000 schools in 33 countries worldwide on its website. The recommended schools are relatively trustworthy and reliable.Australia has been a preferred destination for overseas education for Indian and Chinese students.The Australian Bureau of Statistics said the number of Chinese student enrollments was 146,000 by June 2009, up an average annual 16 percent over the past six years.
