Phil Bredesen, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Tennessee, is running with Taylor Swift's decision to endorse him, touting how rare it is for the pop star to wade into politics in a new digital video and publicly thanking her on Twitter. In a video, simply titled "Taylor Swift," Bredesen's campaign cribs Swift's song, "Look What You Made Me Do" with a slate aimed at his opponent, Republican Rep. Marsha Blackburn, that reads, "Look What Marsha Made Her Do." The video then proceeds to clip together news coverage of Swift's unexpected endorsement, with reporters repeatedly noting the move is "out of the norm" for Swift.Swift, in a lengthy Instagram post on Sunday, decried Blackburn, a Republican representative who has run toward President Donald Trump in her bid for the Senate."Running for Senate in the state of Tennessee is a woman named Marsha Blackburn," Swift wrote. "As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I cannot support Marsha Blackburn. Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me."Swift slammed Blackburn for not backing equal pay for women, against reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act and for her views on gay marriage."These are not MY Tennessee values," she wrote before backing Bredesen and Rep. Jim Cooper, who is running for Congress in a safely Democratic seat.Bredesen is looking to surprise Democrats and Republicans alike and win a Senate seat in Tennessee, a state that backed Trump by 26 percentage points in 2016.On Tuesday he congratulated Swift for winning an award at the American Music Awards and tweeted a seemingly homemade video thanking her for her endorsement."Taylor, I want to just say thanks so much for your endorsement this past weekend and for the very kind words you said about me," said Bredesen, the former governor of Tennessee. "When people like you who are in a position of influence speak out on issue, it's really important and I admire you for it very much." 1998

Our nation’s veterans and Gold Star families will receive free access for life to any national park, national wildlife refuge, and other federal lands.Beginning Veterans Day, which is Wednesday, the Department of Interior said they would permanently waive the entrance fees for them.“The Trump Administration is committed to honoring American patriots – the men and women who have served in our armed forces,” said Secretary Bernhardt in a press release. “With the utmost respect and gratitude, we are granting veterans and Gold Star Families free access to the iconic and treasured lands they fought to protect starting this Veterans Day and every single day thereafter.”To get the free pass, which is called America the Beautiful, veterans must provide a form of identification that would show they served in the armed forces or in the United States National Guard and Reserves.Gold star families are next of kin of a member of the United States Armed Forces who lost his or her life in a war, an international terrorist attack, or a military operation outside of the US while serving in the armed forces, the department said. With the pass, 2,000 federal recreation sites on more than 400 million acres of public lands, including Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Arches, and Mount Rushmore National Memorial, will be accessed. The department already waives fees for active-duty military service members. 1403
OTAY MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - A housing development going up in the South Bay could be giving San Diego renters a better chance to become homeowners. That's because the attached homes that comprise the Playa del Sol master plan community in Otay Mesa start from the high 0,000s, which is just above the median price for the area. "This is an opportunity for the first-time home buyer," said Jimmy Ayala, division president for Pardee Homes, which is developing the community. The development, with some phases already complete, will ultimately grow to 800 units, all with two or more bedrooms. It's located just north of the 905 freeway at Caliente Road. RELATED: Making it in San Diego: Key saving steps helped renter buy her first homeAyala says the market has cooled in the last two years, and lower interest rates have helped turn renters into buyers. He says Pardee has its own mortgage company, so it is able to work with buyers who may not have a large amount of cash for a down payment. Ayala says typical monthly payments range between ,600 and ,200 a month, and most people put 5 to 10 percent down. "In this general vicinity, there's about 2,000 homes that are currently being rented and we draw from those folks who are cash flowing, so to speak, on a monthly basis but don't always have a down payment for a home," Ayala said. RELATED: Making It In San Diego: How housing got so expensiveAyala said currently there are two units available in the high 0,000s but that most are on the market 0,000s. The HOA fees for the complex run about 5 per month. Heather Evans, who is paying ,200 a month for her daughter to rent a room near Mesa College, said several of her relatives feel buying is out of reach. "I'd love to see her be a homeowner someday but I have nieces in the area, early 30s, that are renting," she said, adding her niece and her nieces husband pay ,000 a month for a one-bedroom apartment. Ayala said the homes are priced to market. The properties Pardee is selling in East County are available for 0,000 to 0,000, while those in Coastal North County are on the market for million to .5 million. Need more help?
