LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jon Stewart is returning to TV with a new home more than five years after bowing out as host of “The Daily Show.”The Apple TV+ streaming service says Stewart will host an hour-long current affairs series exploring topics of national interest as well as his advocacy work.Stewart has been an outspoken supporter of military veterans and 9/11 first responders. He and his wife, Tracey, are also animal rights proponents. The Hollywood Reporter described Stewart’s multi-year deal with Apple as “expansive” and said the upcoming show has already been greenlit for multiple seasons.Stewart’s production company will also have a first-look deal for other projects to be developed and produced for Apple, the Hollywood Reporter says. The new series is expected to debut in 2021 — so if Stewart wants to weigh in on a presidential race, as he regularly did on his long-running Comedy Central show, he’ll have to wait until the 2024 contest.Welcome back, Jon Stewart. https://t.co/oXo4nQBsYv— Apple TV (@AppleTV) October 28, 2020 1047

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A federal judge in Los Angeles Thursday gave preliminary approval to a 5 million class-action settlement with women who claim they were sexually abused by former USC campus gynecologist Dr. George Tyndall."We are pleased that the court has granted preliminary approval," according to a joint statement from the plaintiffs' lawyers. "This settlement gives every single woman who saw Tyndall a choice in how they want to participate and hold USC accountable, while also forcing the school to change to ensure this doesn't happen again. The judge's order is an important step toward providing each survivor the relief and measure of closure she deserves, and we look forward to obtaining final approval."UC Interim President Wanda M. Austin issued a statement saying the preliminary approval of the settlement "is a very important step forward in healing our community. The settlement provides every affected individual the opportunity for a fair and respectful resolution, and it contains additional reforms that will build upon the impactful changes we have already made to strengthen our university."Tyndall and USC have been sued by hundreds of alleged victims, many of whom claim they were inappropriately fondled or photographed by Tyndall under the guise of gynecological exams. Many have also accused him of making sexually charged comments during the exams.U.S. District Judge Stephen V. Wilson set a January hearing to discuss finalizing the settlement, under which Tyndall's former patients each would receive minimum payments of ,500, in addition to being eligible to claim an award of between ,500 to 0,000, subject to review by a three-member panel.Beyond the payments, the settlement requires USC to institute a series of administrative changes, including the creation of a position for "an independent women's health advocate" to ensure complaints about improper sexual or racial conduct are investigated.USC also must conduct background checks on health center employees that delve into prior history of sexual harassment allegations, in addition to improving staff training and bolstering staffing so that female students have the option of seeing a female doctor. The class includes as many as 17,000 women seen by Tyndall at the USC Student Health Center between Aug. 14, 1989, and June 21, 2016, whose treatment included an examination of their breast or genital areas by the physician. 2441

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A shirtless man is in custody after leading Los Angeles-area authorities on an auto pursuit that ended in a Venice Beach parking lot where he was taken down by a stun gun.News helicopters showed the scene Friday afternoon as the pursuit transitioned from a freeway to city streets and then entered the parking lot, where the driver finally stopped and got out of the SUV.The man started walking away, but officers equipped with guns and less-lethal weapons closed in and he suddenly fell flat on his back.Officers swarmed the man as beachgoers gathered to watch.Police tell KTLA the man was suspected of assault and making criminal threats against his mother. 686

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The touching black-and-white drama "Roma" that follows a domestic worker for a middle-class family in 1970s Mexico City won the Oscar for best foreign language film Sunday.Director Alfonso Cuaron's deeply personal film with dialogue in Spanish and Mixtec gave Mexico its long-sought statuette in the foreign film category. The Netflix-produced film was inspired by Cuaron's own youth. "Roma" won him the best director award and one for best cinematography. The story develops in the midst of the turmoil that rocked Mexico in the early 70s, including the student demonstrations that in 1971 led to a massacre by a group backed by authorities. Society is fraying and the women of the house seem to take the brunt as they try to keep the family of four children afloat. The film beat four other contenders that also told the stories of individuals and families facing tumultuous social and historical times. The other nominated films were Polish filmmaker Pawel Pawlikowski's 20th-century romance "Cold War;" German director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's artist biopic "Never Look Away;" Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda's's subtle family story "Shoplifters;" and "Capernaum," a powerful neo-realist drama about a Syrian child refugee from Lebanon's Nadine Labaki. The foreign film statue is not given to a specific individual, but to the nominating country. Eighty-seven countries submitted movies for consideration this year.Mexico has competed for the trophy eight other times, most recently in 2011 with "Biutiful" by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, but had never won. 1598

LONDON (AP) — Angelina Jolie has not ruled out a move into politics — and has joked that she might be tough enough to take the rough and tumble that comes with it.The American actress and U.N. envoy told BBC radio she "can take a lot on the chin" — a possible reference to her bitter divorce from Brad Pitt. When asked if she is moving in the direction of politics, the 43-year-old Oscar winner said, "I honestly will do whatever I think can really make change."Jolie is a special envoy for the U.N. refugee agency. She used her slot as a "guest editor" on the BBC to highlight refugee issues in the Middle East. She also included Chinese artist Ai Weiwei and Nobel Peace Prize winner Denis Mukwege on the show. 717
