The big push is coming from Amazon, which is holding its annual Prime Day sales event Tuesday and Wednesday. It's the first time Prime Day has been held in the fall after Amazon postponed it from July due to pandemic. Walmart, Best Buy, and Target are also offering online deals on TVs, toys, and other items over the same two days. There's a good reason for the early start. News can happen at any time and any place, ujst ask Anna Boyko-Weyrauch.  The reporter from KUOW Public Radio had just locked her tray table into place when the pilot of the plane that was about to fly her to San Diego announced a delay."He says there’s a guy, and he’s got a plane and he’s flying around Seattle and so he’s tying up all the airways" said Boiko-Weyrauch. Her plane was among the 40 or so stranded for more than an hour while a rogue airport employee flew a Horizon Airways plane in the skies above Seattle.Boiko-Weyrauch immediately fired up her cell phone and began tweeting.  "I kick into news mode," she recalled.  "I hear these things from the pilot. I'm trying to confirm them."She used Twitter and e-mail to try to learn more about the situation. The pilot came back on the plane's intercom, telling passengers the man delaying their flight learned how to fly on the internet.  Somehow he managed not only to take off, but to fly past Mt. Rainier and the Olympic Mountains.She tweeted: Hey @AlaskaAir, can you confirm any of the reports we’re hearing and reading? A stolen Q-400? A suicidal pilot? F-15 escorts? A crash? Anything? About an hour and 15 minutes after the delay began, Boiko-Weyrauch read a tweet that said the plane had crashed and smoke was seen.  Moments later, her pilot told passengers the delay was over.She set her phone to flight mode and waited three hours until the flight landed in San Diego to confirm the man who stole the plane crashed it and died.Boiko-Weyrauch laughed as she admitted she almost left her work cell phone behind, thinking she wouldn't need it during a weekend visit with her 93-year-old grandmother.  The reporter in her decided to keep the phone handy, just in case. 1829

NEWBURY PARK (KGTV) -- A wind-driven brush fire has erupted in Southern California, burning near structures in the Newbury Park area of Ventura County.Cal Fire says the Hill Fire has quickly grown to 5,000 to 7,000 acres, shutting down both directions of Highway 101, as of 4 p.m. More than 160 firefighters have been dispatched, and eight air tankers have been ordered.At a Thursday night news conference, Ventura County fire officials said they expect the blaze to burn all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Should winds pick up, the blaze could reach the ocean by Friday morning. According to firefighters, the fuel burning hasn't seen a wildfire in a long time, adding to the intensity of the fire. One firefighter did receive minor injuries fighting the blaze. The nature of the injury wasn't specified. The Hill Fire is about 5 miles from the site of a shooting Wednesday night at a bar in Thousand Oaks, California, in which 12 people were killed.It's the second brush fire in the area as another fire, dubbed the Woolsey Fire, had burned about 300 acres to the east in the Bell Canyon area as of 4 p.m.Gusty Santa Ana winds are blowing through Ventura and neighboring Los Angeles counties at about 25-30 miles per hour. NEW YORK -- A suspended NYPD officer is now facing criminal charges after using an apparent chokehold during a now-viral arrest in Queens last Sunday.Officer David Afanador has been charged with attempted aggravated strangulation and strangulation in the second degree, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said Thursday.The 39-year-old cop, who has a history of complaints against him, was arrested and booked at his own Queens precinct just after 9 a.m. Thursday, according to police.If convicted, Afanador faces up to seven years in prison, the DA's office said.DA Katz acknowledged that body-camera footage shows the officers being cursed at and badgered before the incident. "Everyday, however, police officers find themselves in circumstances that require them to exercise restraint and are charged with de-escalating potentially volatile conflicts," the district attorney said."Even under the most difficult of circumstances...this kind of action is exactly the kind of police conduct that the NYPD has banned and our State Legislature criminalized," Katz added.Afanador was suspended without pay Monday, just a day after being caught on video pinning 35-year-old Ricky Bellevue to the ground and apparently putting him in a banned chokehold in the confrontation on the Rockaway Beach boardwalk.Mayor Bill de Blasio said at the time it was the fastest he'd ever seen the NYPD discipline an officer.The NYPD released the body-cam video of the arrest almost immediately after bystander video of the incident went viral.Prosecutors opened the investigation into Afanador’s actions Monday, saying at the time "there must be zero tolerance for police misconduct."Afanador was acquitted in a prior case stemming from allegations he pistol-whipped a Bronx teenage suspect and broke two teeth in 2014.The officer has had eight Civilian Complaint Review Board complaints filed against him, including use of excessive force and denying medical attention, since he joined the force in 2005.The use of excessive force by police has sparked weeks of protests and rallies in New York City and nationwide.The outcries for police reform prompted Commissioner Shea to shake up leadership at the NYPD.
