SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Saturday, Americans mourned the death of Congressman John Lewis after his battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.Lewis, a Democrat who represented Georgia's 5th Congressional district for 17 years, was part of the "Big Six" civil rights activists who organized the March on Washington in 1963.In San Diego, the civil rights icon is also remembered through two unique ties.RELATED: U.S. flags at half-staff in memory of Rep. John LewisA little more than a year ago, Lewis was donning protective gear to weld his initials into his namesake ship at a San Diego shipyard. On May 13, 2019, Lewis pulled welding gloves over his hands to fuse his initials into the keel plate of the USNS John Lewis at the General Dynamics Shipyard — the lead ship in a class of oiler vessels.Consistent with his commitment to non-violence, the ships will be non-combat vessels but play a vital role in refueling other ships at sea."For the U.S. Navy and former Secretary Ray Mabus to see fit to honor me in this way is unreal and almost unimaginable," Lewis said in a statement last year. "I only try to do what is fair, what is right, and what is just and get in what I call good trouble, necessary trouble. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Seaport Village is seeing a bounce back in foot traffic now that the most stringent of coronavirus-related restrictions have eased.Port of San Diego officials say in the last month, 39,661 people came to the coastal shopping mall. That's more than double the 16,606 people that came through the center in the month after the shutdown order took effect March 13. The port took over management of Seaport Village about two years ago and invested more than million to spruce it up, create more in-person events, and add new tenants. The idea was to reverse the decline in the village, which had seen numerous closures. Ultimately, the port plans to redevelop the property with a hotel, office space, an aquarium, and a spire. "We're really just doing our best to set it up for the future, for us this is the perfect opportunity with all of the interest that we've gotten," said Lucy Contreras, a program manager in the Port's real estate division.In the last year, the Port has signed leases with Geppetto's, Spill the Beans Coffee, Mr. Moto Pizza House, Sam the Cooking Guy for a restaurant, and a Mike Hess Brewing tasting room combined with City Tacos. The duo already has a location in Imperial Beach and will take over a former restaurant spot on the center's western edge overlooking the bay. "Ever since then, and that's been like three and a half years, you tell people we're doing beer and tacos on the beach, beer and tacos on the water, nobody thinks that's a bad idea," Hess said. On Friday, the port signed a lease with the Malibu Farm restaurant for a Seaport Village location.The mall, which canceled many in-person events during the shutdown, started once again offering live music two weeks ago. It also has balcony concerts every Thursday and Saturday. While the foot traffic has increased, it is still down from pre-COVID-19 levels. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego resident Jenifer Raub describes herself as a fighter.“I just don’t give up. If I see a window, just a little crack in the doorway of opportunity, I’m going to jump on it," said Raub.She never imagined to find herself in the fight against Parkinson's Disease, a progressive nervous system disorder which affects movement and has no cure.“For me, it was I had a hard time walking, but it was real intermittent, it just made no sense, and then my hands started to shake," said Raub.In the beginning, Raub refused to believe the diagnosis, eventually finding a doctor who told her what she wanted to hear."He told me I didn’t have the disease and he told me to go off all those medications you're fine. I did, and I couldn’t walk at all at that point.”So Raub shifted her fight towards finding a cure for Parkinson's.She's now president of the Summit for Stem Cell Foundation, a nonprofit created to support the use of stem cells to treat Parkinson’s; research underway in Dr. Jeanne Loring’s Torrey Pines lab. “We’re right on the edge of a revolution, in which these particular cells, because of their power and our ability to manipulate them, are going to change the way medicine is done," said Dr. Loring.Her research focuses on pluripotent stem cells, the remarkable cells that self-renew and can give rise to every cell type in the body.Parkinson’s Disease breaks down and eventually kills certain nerve cells in the brain, dopamine neurons that affect movement. Dr. Loring's team is working to transform patient's skin cells into pluripotent cells which can then become dopamine neurons. “We plan to transplant those cells to the brains of people with Parkinson’s to replace neurons they’ve lost," said Dr. Loring. Because the cells come from the actual patient, they are a perfect match which the body will not reject. After the implant, Dr. Loring says over time they'll make connections and restore circuits that have been broken by the loss of dopamine neurons. Patients, she says, will likely start seeing changes in their symptoms in six months. Dr. Loring believes the treatment could also work for other diseases like Alzheimer's and Multiple Sclerosis. ‘These diseases are not going to able to be treated with a conventional drug that you take, it's going to have to be more sophisticated than that, and I think this opens the opportunity for really scientifically-based, knowledge-based therapies. Stem cells are medicines; we can't forget that. They're living drugs," said Dr. Loring.Her team has already proven the treatment works in animals. Now they're waiting on FDA approval for a clinical trial of 10 patients, Raub will be one of them. Raub is also a patient advocate and works tirelessly to fundraise for Summit for Stem Cell Foundation. "The disease is a progressive disease and their [patient's] time is of the essence, it's critical to people with Parkinson’s. The disease does not wait for an answer, it just keeps going," said Raub.Raub says she won't stop either, on behalf of all the patient's up against time. 3077
