CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Worried about having their young students continue to develop reading skills during distance learning, the Chula Vista Elementary School District has launched a new effort to get each students books they can have at home.“When you start reading at a later age, reading becomes a chore," said Dr. Lydia Burgos, Principal at Montgomery Elementary. "We want them to become lovers of books.”CVESD schools are working to find sources of reading level-appropriate books. They have developed partnerships with civic organizations, such as Lions and Rotary Clubs, as well as getting donations from UC San Diego. Some teachers are soliciting cash donations online to purchase books. “We begged, borrowed, and stolen from anywhere that we can in order to have the different levels we need so that all of our students have multiple books in their book bag," said Harborside Elementary Principal Lisa Forehand.Once the books are obtained, they are divided into packets that families can pick up during set distribution times. 1050

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A grateful South Bay mother says a "miracle" happened, after her missing son surfaced in a small Mexican town with no memory.Without a job, 37-year-old John Mooney ended up on the streets in the Chula Vista several years ago but he never lost touch with his mother."Always had contact with him. Not two or three days would go by without me seeing him," said Lynda Mooney, John's mother.John would visit Lynda at her Chula Vista home, where he stored his belongings. In late September, he stopped showing up.RELATED: Chula Vista: Victim carjacked, kidnapped by suspects disguised as officers"Very out of the ordinary. I was devastated and panicking," said Lynda.Lynda filed a missing persons report and searched."Anywhere you go, you look for him. Your imagination runs away from you. Every time you hear a siren, you are panicking," said Lynda. The agony of not knowing became her daily torture. A month and a half went by. Then came a surprise early this week.RELATED: Several high-end vehicles vandalized in Chula Vista neighborhood"Shocked, relief, and disbelief," said Lynda. She found herself staring at John's photo, shared with her from a viral post. A week prior, a mystery man had appeared in Ejido Neuvo Leon, a small Mexican town southeast of Mexicali, with no memory. He did not know his name and spoke only English, Lynda says. The locals fed and cared for him and the story of the stranger spread quickly. The San Diego-based California Advocates for the Missing created the Facebook post that went viral and within two hours, Lynda saw it. "Relief, frantic. Trying to figure out what's going on ... how to put the puzzle pieces together," said Lynda.RELATED: Testimony wraps in murder trial of Chula Vista man stabbed, stuffed in barrelLynda says she can't explain his amnesia. She's grateful to the missing persons group, which helped connect her to people in the town, leading to a brief phone call with her son."They are so amazing. The outreach of help through them has been humbling. Don't have words to express what this means to me ... Such a relief to hear his voice," said Lynda.John has gotten a bit of his memory back, but remains reluctant to come home."We will keep at it. The question I keep asking is, 'How'd he get there?' I just want to bring him home," said Lynda. 2331

CHICAGO, Ill. – Travis Scott has become the first person since Michael Jordan to get a signature meal at McDonald’s.The fast-food chain announced its partnership with the Houston-born rapper last week, saying they plan to collaborate on food, fashion and community efforts. From Sept. 8 through Oct. 4, McDonald’s says it will offer “The Travis Scott Meal,” which includes a Quarter Pounder with cheese, bacon and lettuce, fries with BBQ sauce to dip, and a Sprite. The meal cost and will be offered at all restaurants across the U.S.“This is the first time since 1992 that a celebrity’s name has been featured on the McDonald’s menu, only done prior by the legendary Michael Jordan,” wrote McDonald’s in a press release. “To snag The Travis Scott meal, fans can order in-restaurant, for carry-out, at the drive-thru, or through the McDonald’s app.”McDonald’s and Scott say they will be exploring opportunities to support charitable organizations during the month-long program.“I couldn’t be more excited to bring the Cactus Jack x McDonald’s collaboration to life,” said Scott. “We are bringing together two iconic worlds. Including a charitable component was key for me, and I can’t wait for people to see what we have in store.”Additionally, Scott is selling McDonald’s-themed merchandise on his website. Items range from shirts and shorts, to a “I’m lovin’ it” tray and a chicken nugget body pillow. He has also designed custom apparel for McDonald’s crew, according to the restaurant chain. 1505

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police are searching for the suspects accused of stabbing a 15-year-old to death as he tried to defend his friend at a Chula Vista birthday party in late January. According to police, the stabbing took place on January 31 on the 900 block of Maria Way in Chula Vista. Police say an argument broke out between two teenagers. The argument later turned physical and, as the 15-year-old -- identified by friends as Devin Griffiths -- tried to help a friend being attacked by several men, he was stabbed in the upper body, according to police. RELATED: Residents concerned over rash of vandalism in Chula VistaGriffiths was taken to the hospital with critical injuries where he later died on February 16. According to police, he “passed away with his family at his side.”Police say the suspect group is believed to consist of eight to 15 men and women between the ages of 17 and 20. Investigators believe there is a likelihood witnesses used their cell phones to record the incident and are asking anyone with video to come forward. RELATED: 2 Tijuana police officers among group charged in Chula Vista home burglaryAnyone with information is asked to call Chula Vista Police at 619-691-5178 or the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at 888-580-8477.The teen was a student at Helix Charter High School. The school Tuesday sent a letter to parents that read, in part: "It is with great sadness that we have to inform you that one of our 10th grade students has died. Our thoughts and sympathies are with their family and friends. We ask that you please respect and honor the family's privacy during this difficult time. "The school also said student support is being made available. A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family. On Wednesday evening, classmates will hold a vigil in honor of Griffiths. 1834
