State Representative Kelly Townsend says she's troubled by video that shows Chandler, Arizona, police officers with guns drawn, forcing their way into a family's home. The officers were there for a 2-year-old boy who was believed to have an extremely high fever. Townsend, a Republican in District 16, played a big role in getting legislation passed requiring the Arizona Department of Child Safety to get a search warrant to remove children from their home in a non-emergency situation. Townsend says she never thought this would be the result."The doctor chose to use DCS to remove the child and DCS chose to use the police and the police chose to use the SWAT team," said Townsend. "That is not the country that I recognize."Townsend says this all started back in February when the parents took the 2-year-old-boy, who isn't vaccinated, to a naturopathic doctor for a fever of about 105. The doctor instructed the parents to take the infant to the emergency room but after the doctor's visit the child's fever broke, so they never went.After finding that out, the doctor called DCS which then called Chandler police to check on the child. After the father refused to let police into the home to check on the boy, police came back later with a search warrant and forced their way into the home after the family didn't respond."All because of a fever. A fever! It's absolutely ridiculous," said Nicholas Boca, the family's attorney. "That type of kicking your door in, with guns drawn... it should be reserved for violent criminals.""At that point who now owns control over the child?" asked Townsend. "And it seems like we've given that now to the doctor and the parent no longer has the say or they risk the SWAT team taking all of your children and potentially the newborn."Townsend says she can see both sides on this story: a concerned doctor and protective parents, but she's questioning how it was done and the amount of force used."We need to admit that this situation was a mistake," said Townsend. "There are other situations where there is neglect, there is abuse and that's what we need to focus on."DCS said it's not able to comment on the case specifically because of privacy laws.Townsend said the child actually had an upper respiratory infection, not meningitis like the doctor had feared.The Chandler Police Department says DCS obtained a search warrant and asked for their assistance entering the home, but says they used regular officers and not SWAT officers.The parents are fighting to get their kids back. Students are in the process of advancing from classroom to school to region to earn a spot in the national finals in National Harbor, Maryland, in May 2020. Spellers who win their school spelling bee but don’t advance past their region can keep their dream alive of competing in the national spotlight. For the third year in a row, the Bee is offering its RSVBee program. It is a participation pathway that qualifies more spellers for the national finals. It is the only way students living in unsponsored regions can advance and is an additional opportunity for the best spellers in the country to compete on the national stage.The Bee created RSVBee with an eye toward fairness, accessibility, maintaining the integrity of the competition and delivering a quality Bee Week experience for all. The Scripps National Spelling Bee has more than 250 sponsors across the country who support the program and make it possible for local students to advance. Still, there are unsponsored sections in the U.S., and some of its sponsored regions have grown so large and competitive that RSVBee is the Bee’s answer to address access and fairness. “We’ve known for many years that large numbers of excellent spellers have had limited access to the national finals or no pathway at all,” said Paige Kimble, executive director of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. “We created RSVBee to address this very issue and make our iconic competition accessible to a wider population of children who love words and language and enjoy competitive spelling.” The Bee is narrowing the field of the national finals to about 400 competitors, down from last year’s 562, with the intent of providing spellers and their families with a more personalized, quality experience during Bee Week. Rockland County, a suburb of New York City, is taking a big step when it comes to vaccination. Effective Wednesday, any unvaccinated child is banned from public places. Their parents could even face jail time. "Anyone who is under 18 years of age and is unvaccinated against the measles will be barred from public places until the declaration expires in 30 days,” announced Ed Day, a Rockland County executive. A state of emergency was declared in the county, following what officials say is the worst measles outbreak there in decades. As of this week, there have been 153 confirmed cases. "We have now the worst outbreak in the nation,” said Day. “The time has come to do something." Minors, excluding those with medical exemptions, are now barred from schools, churches and stores. Although police won't be patrolling vaccination records, leaders say parents could face jail time and fines. "If you have threats of being arrested and put in jail for 6 months because you choose not to inject your child with a pharmaceutical product, that’s the definition of fascism," argues Philip Silberman, an anti-vaxxer. The health choice advocate says this move is all part of a political agenda. "The agenda is to always just kind of eat away at our freedoms little by little by little," Silberman says.
