(KGTV) - Residents of a small mobile home park across the street from the proposed Newland Sierra development, Measure B on the March ballot, say they fear a "yes" vote to approve the project could do irreparable damage to their community.Deer Springs Oaks is made up of 32 mobile homes off Deer Springs Road, directly across the street from the Newland Sierra site. That plan, if voters approve, would allow for around 2,100 new homes, along with open space and infrastructure changes. Residents of Deer Springs Oaks, funded by the nearby Golden Door Spa, have been making the case to voters that Measure B will make a bad traffic situation worse and create a dangerous trap in a wildfire zone. But they also worry that the project could have a more direct impact on their homes. The building of Newland Sierra would require the widening of Deer Springs Road, as well as changes to the nearby interchange with I-15. While Newland Sierra developers say these will not affect the mobile home park, the residents say they are not getting any guarantees from Newland Sierra, the County, or CalTrans."We don't know what they're going to do, how they're going to do it," said resident Georgeann Higgins. "They're so arrogant as to not inform us. These are our homes." Lawyers representing many of the residents obtained plans for some of the alternatives being considered by CalTrans. At least two would cause major changes to Deer Springs Oaks, including the possibility of residents losing property and a road being moved to go through the center of the complex."They impact the park big time," said resident Tony Eason. "They would destroy the park."A spokesperson from Newland Sierra told 10News that the maps being used by the residents are outdated. He sent 10News at statement: “This is just another desperate attempt by the Golden Door Spa and its army of lawyers to try to confuse and scare voters. This alternative was one of more than a dozen road improvement alternatives that was studied. It was ultimately rejected by CalTrans and is no longer an option. The real truth is that Measure B will create affordably priced homes for working families with open space, parks and trails - a better choice than the current General Plan that permits a two million square foot mega-commercial development, mansions and parking lots." ESCONDIDO (CNS) - Two children sparked a small fire in an Escondido church after finding a lighter in a classroom there, fire officials said.Escondido firefighters and police were dispatched just before 1 p.m. Sunday in response to a report of a possible structure fire somewhere near South Escondido Boulevard and West Seventh Avenue, Battalion Chief Mike Bertrand said. Officers arrived on scene first and discovered the blaze was inside the Iglesia Bautista Fundamental meeting house at 221 West Seventh Ave."Officers ensured that the building had been evacuated, as church services had just concluded, and confirmed that the fire was located in a second floor classroom," Bertrand said. "Escondido fire units arrived on scene and were able to contain the fire to the room of origin."Crews knocked down the flames in eights minutes, Bertrand said. Five engines and one water truck responded, and no firefighters or churchgoers were injured.A fire investigator responded to the scene and determined that two children started the blaze with a lighter they found in the classroom, Bertrand said. Fire officials said the incident is a reminder to ensure matches and lighters are stored safely and that all buildings have a fire evacuation plan. 1251

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Plans are underway to reinvigorate Escondido's historic downtown, with new businesses and plans to make the area more pedestrian friendly. One of the new ventures is the first-of-its-kind. "Escondido now has really started to invest a lot of time, a lot of effort, and they're putting a lot of money into the downtown district," said Nick Corona, a nationally recognized homebrewer who lives in San Marcos.When Corona started homebrewing in 2012, the dream was always to start a brewery, which he named Five Suits Brewing. Now that dream is coming true in a way he couldn't have envisioned back then. "We're looking to hopefully become a little bit more of a draw for Escondido."The plan is to house four different businesses under one roof, three of which are craft beverage manufacturers: beer, gin, and mead.The gin distillery is Stoke Distilling Co. and the meadery is Good Omen. "Nobody else in California and I don't even think in the U.S., has a storefront place that you can go to that has a brewery, a winery, and a distillery, with a restaurant all in the same location," said Brian LaMere, Owner of Good Omen.The owners of Carlsbad's Notorious Burgers will be supplying the food, which will consist of craft tacos and Mexican street food. The project is still waiting on approval from the alcohol and beverage agencies, but Corona says they've identified a 14,000 sq/ft property on Grand Ave. "It will be a destination, there's no doubt about it," said Corona. As far as making downtown more friendly to pedestrians, city planners say there are plans to widen the sidewalks, create more parking, and add art. ENSENADA, Mexico (KGTV) - The family of a man injured in an ATV accident in Mexico is seeking donations to help get him to a hospital in San Diego.Chad Carrico, who works for a pest control company in Seattle, was on a cruise from Seattle to Mexico when he got off for a day in Ensenada in Baja California on October 10. He and a few friends rented ATV’s but his mother, Theresa Carrico, said he hit something and lost control.“He flew over the handles and the ATV rolled on top of him and crushed him,” said Carrico.His liver was severely damaged. He also suffered a punctured lung and had internal bleeding. He underwent surgery at Velmar Hospital and was placed on life support. He also has to undergo daily kidney dialysis.His mother said, he does not have health insurance in the United States but his employer paid the first ,000 payment.On Monday, she said the hospital told them they owe another ,000.Making matters more pressing, on Monday night they learned he was going into septic shock and may also have contracted a dangerous fungus on his nose that could spread to his brain.
