CHENGDU, May 29 (Xinhua) -- China Saturday started construction of a center in southwestern China's Sichuan Province to train giant pandas born in captivity to live in the wild.The center is located at Majiagou of Yutang Town, Dujiangyan City, said Zhang Zhihe, head of the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding and Research Base and founder of the center.The center covers an area of 134.87 hectares and will cost 160 million yuan (23.5 million U.S. dollars).After the center is completed, the breeding and research base will put 40 to 50 giant pandas raised in captivity into the center for training and research, according to Zhang.The center will cooperate with the Chengdu breeding and research base, the Wolong Giant Panda Conservation Base, the Dujiangyan Disease Control and Prevention Center for Giant Pandas and the Shaanxi Rescue Center for Endangered Animals.In the experimental zone of the center being built, the giant pandas will be trained to reduce their dependency on humans. But they will still live in cages.After five to 10 years training in the experimental zone, the giant pandas that perform well will be introduced into the "half-natural" zone.In the following five to 10 years, the pandas there will live in tree holes or caves and forage for food. But they will still receive frequent checkups and participate in artificial breeding.Then, only one or two of the giant pandas will have the chance to spend another five to 10 years in a nearly "natural" zone with little human contact. Then they will be released into the nearby giant panda natural reserve, Zhang said.Giant pandas are the world's most endangered species. Some 1,590 panda live in the wild and over 300 pandas are in captivity in China, Zhang said.China started a giant panda training project in 2003 to teach the animals to live in the wild. But the project suffered a major setback when Xiang Xiang, a five-year-old male panda, was found dead in a remote part of the Wolong Nature Reserve in February 2007.Xiang Xiang was released into the wild in April 2006 after nearly three years of training.

BEIJING, June 2 (Xinhua) -- Monks across China on Wednesday chanted prayers for the victims of the earthquake that struck northwest China's Qinghai Province in April, exactly 49 days after the deaths, which according to Buddhist belief marks the start of the souls' reincarnation. Major temples of the three main schools of Buddhism in China all held prayer rituals for the about 2,700 victims killed in the 7.1-magnitude earthquake that hit Yushu on April 14, a statement from the Buddhist Association of China (BAC) said. About 1,000 Mahayana Buddhist monks attended the prayer session at Beijing's Guangji Temple led by Chuanyin, the BAC president, while the 11th Panchen Lama, the association's vice president, hosted another prayer session at the Lama Temple, an important Tibetan Buddhist temple in Beijing. In southwestern Yunnan Province, monks of Hinayana Buddhism gathered at the Zongfo Temple to pray. Other important temples in Shanxi, Zhejiang, Shanghai and Lhasa also held prayer rituals at the same time. The monks prayed for the victims' souls and for the survivors to overcome the hardships caused by the disaster. Xuecheng, BAC vice president and secretary general, presided over the prayer ritual at the Gyegu Monastery, the main temple in quake-hit Yushu. About 1,000 monks and local residents attended the prayer ritual at the massive cremation site for hundreds of Tibetan quake victims in Gyegu township. Many local residents arrived at the cremation site early in the morning, praying for the dead while turning prayer wheels. Some kowtowed in memory of the dead. "So many eminent monks and living Buddhas attended the prayer ritual and I believe my love is sure to enter the paradise," said Benma, who lost her husband in the quake. "Many good-hearted people have given us support and the monks have been praying day and night," she said. CHIFENG, Inner Mongolia, April 10 (Xinhua) -- As a massive drought is plaguing most parts of southwest China, the dry spell is also spreading to many areas of the country's north.More than 250,000 people are short of drinking water in the sparsely populated Chifeng City of north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.More than 272,800 cattle also lack drinking water, an official with the municipal water conservancy bureau told Xinhua Saturday.The nine major reservoirs in the city of 90,000 square kiloters in territory just hold 91.75 million cubic meters of water, down 73.7 percent from the same time last year.Adding to the woe, 62 percent of the city's mid- and small-sized reservoirs have dried up, the official said.Major rivers also see a decrease of 77.4 percent in water volume.Even though Chifeng city has suffered from successive years of drought since 1999, this year's has been the gravest in the past decade, the official said.The government has mobilized more than 626,300 people in the drought relief work, with more than 30.33 million yuan (about 4.46 million U.S. dollars) of special-use fund, the official said.
