Michael, now a Category 1 hurricane slashing Cuba, is forecast to be a "dangerous major hurricane" when it smacks the US Gulf Coast on Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center said.The forecast indicates Michael may be a Category 3 hurricane -- with winds from 111 to 129 mph -- when it strikes."Life-threatening storm surge is possible along portions of the Florida Gulf Coast regardless of the storm's exact track or intensity," the center said. The storm went from 40 mph on Sunday to 75 mph on Monday and is expected to undergo rapid intensification again in the next 24 hours.The storm now has maximum sustained winds of 85 mph. A Category 1 hurricane has sustained winds of 74 to 95 mph.Monday night, Michael's center was about 60 miles north-northwest of the western tip of Cuba, with the storm moving northward at 12 miles per hour. Hurricane-force winds extended outward up to 30 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extended outward up to 175 miles.Track the stormThe storm is aiming at a region that stretches from Mobile, Alabama, through the Florida Panhandle and into the Big Bend area of northern Florida.A hurricane warning from the National Weather Service was declared for the Alabama-Florida border to the Suwannee River in Florida. A warning means that hurricane conditions are expected somewhere within the designated area, and warnings are typically issued 36 hours before tropical-storm-force winds are expected, the weather service said.Storm and storm surge watches were issued for the Gulf Coast from the Mississippi-Alabama border to Chassahowitzka, Florida, north of Tampa Bay.As forecast, Michael would be the first Category 3 or higher hurricane to hit the Panhandle since Hurricane Dennis in 2005. Michigan's tallest man has died. Michael D. Lanier, 48, of Troy, died Wednesday, April 25 at Beaumont Hospital. He was 7 feet 7 inches tall.Lanier and his twin brother, Jim, were in the Guinness Book of Records as the tallest identical twins in the world. Michael is survived by his wife Janet “Battani” Lanier of Troy and her children Christopher Campbell of Jackson & Kathryn Campbell of Troy, siblings: Jennifer (Michael) Toomajian of Troy, James (Michele) Lanier of Greenwood, Indiana, Gary (Traci) Lanier of Plymouth, MI., Also survived by nieces & nephews: Hunter, Jared, & Jessica Toomajian, Daniel & Sarah Lanier, and Kaden, Katherine, & Karl Lanier. No details have been released on the cause of death. 759

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. (KGTV) -- A Marine Corps helicopter crashed during a routine training mission over the El Centro area Tuesday afternoon, according to officials. The CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter from 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing crashed around 2:35 p.m. Four crew members were aboard the aircraft.In a press release, the Marine Corps wrote that the status of all four crew members is, "presumed dead pending positive identification."The cause of the crash is currently under investigation. The names of the deceased will be withheld until family has been notified.  617

Massachusetts is the first state since the deadly shooting in Las Vegas last month to ban bump stocks, the gun accessory the shooter used to increase his rate of fire.Bump stocks became a major source of discussion among lawmakers across the country after the attachments were found on the guns of Las Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock, who killed 58 and injured some 500 last month. But talk of banning the devices nationwide appears to have stalled.Beginning in 2018, penalties for the possession or use of a bump stock or trigger crank in Massachusetts will range from probation to life in prison, Representative David Linsky, a Democrat who proposed the amendment, told CNN.The new law defines a bump stock as "any device for a weapon that increases the rate of fire achievable with such weapon by using energy from the recoil of the weapon to generate a reciprocating action that facilitates repeated activation of the trigger."In other words, the devices allow semi-automatic rifles to fire more rapidly, similar to automatic weapons.
