EL CAJON (CNS) - A man and woman were sentenced Tuesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 2017 shooting death of a man in a botched holdup in the parking lot of a Burlington Coat Factory store in La Mesa, in which they made off with cash and three pairs of shoes taken from the victim. Derrick Eli Henderson, 32, and Kathryn Luwana Williams, 26, were convicted in July of murder and robbery charges for the death of 30-year-old Travis Lewis, who was gunned down on July 20, 2017, outside the Burlington Coat Factory store at 7938 El Cajon Blvd. Jurors deliberated for about two days before convicting Henderson and Williams of the killing, and finding true a special circumstance allegation of committing the killing in the commission of a robbery. The defendants met up with Lewis under the guise of purchasing marijuana from him -- a scheme orchestrated by Williams, who called the victim to arrange the meeting and brought Henderson along as muscle, according to Deputy District Attorney Kristian Trocha. Williams then took shoes the victim had just bought out of the trunk of his car and rifled through Lewis' pockets and took cash as he lay bleeding in the parking lot, but left behind marijuana that he had in his vehicle, Trocha said. In his closing argument, Trocha told the jury that Williams was ``just as responsible as if she pulled the trigger herself.'' Co-defendant Tiesha Miller-Johnson, 34, pleaded guilty to robbery and is slated to be sentenced later this month. Prosecutors said she was the getaway driver. Henderson's attorney, Yahaira Aristy, denied that he was the shooter, while the prosecution claimed that Henderson's DNA was found on the gun and that he told someone else that he ``domed that dude'' when talking about the robbery. Aristy also disputed testimony from Williams that after the shooting, Henderson threatened to kill her if she didn't take Lewis' belongings or if she told anyone about what happened. Williams' attorney, Shervin Samimi, said his client was only there to buy marijuana, and alleged the prosecution was stretching with its claims that she crafted a scheme to rob Lewis. 2397

Disinformation is a problem the country has been dealing with since the past election, but trolls are now getting more specific and targeting communities of color, specifically Black communities.“Bad actors use real cultural issues and conversations happening in Black communities and other communities of African descent and start injecting disinformation and false ideals,” said Jessica Ann Mitchell Aiwuyor, founder of the National Black Cultural Information Trust.A lot of the issues brought up by “bad actors” include talks of reparations and other conversations about slavery.These are real issues that need attention, but trolls will include false information. This ends up causing friction within Black communities and dissuades people from voting.The National Black Cultural Information Trust has made it a goal to counteract this type of disinformation.“So, what we are doing is putting out public service announcements, we are holding teach-ins, we are hosting webinars, we're doing interviews with scholars and activists so they can answer these questions directly,” said Aiwuyor.The group will also use tools to show if accounts have troll-like behavior.It also plans on building coalitions with Black immigrants and Latinos. 1246

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, received his initial dose of a coronavirus vaccine Tuesday morning. Fauci was among a group of federal government health officials and health care workers who were vaccinated. He was joined by Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, National Institutes of Health Director Francis Collins, and front-line workers from the NIH. Those vaccinated with Moderna's coronavirus vaccine will be asked to get a booster 28 days later.Fauci has expressed optimism that getting the US to herd immunity through a coronavirus vaccine will begin allowing Americans to return to normal. EL CAJON (CNS) - The husband of a pregnant woman killed when her car struck a tree after being rear-ended by an alleged drunk driver in Ramona testified Tuesday that he saw the accident in his rear-view mirror.Christian Foderingham's testimony came as a preliminary hearing got underway for Andrew Milonis, charged with murder, DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated in the May 14 death of 29-year-old Jessica Foderingham, who was eight months pregnant.The victim's husband testified that his wife was following him in her own car on San Vincente Road on the way to her grandmother's house on Mother's Day when he heard a loud bang, saw an SUV swerve onto a sidewalk and saw his wife's 2016 Dodge Dart slam into a tree in the center median.RELATED: Judge raises bail to M in Ramona fatal hit and run"It felt like my heart stopped," he said. "I ran back to her car."Christian Foderingham, a U.S. Marine, said he cut off the seat belt holding his wife's lifeless body in place and pulled her out of the car. Jessica Foderingham and her unborn daughter were pronounced dead later at a hospital.The husband said the force of the accident made it look like someone had taken a sledgehammer to his wife's lower body.According to the California Highway Patrol, Milonis was heading east on San Vicente Road when his 2011 GMC Yukon pickup rear-ended the victim's car near Arena Drive about 6:45 p.m.Milonis fled following the collision, then abandoned his vehicle about a mile away and called for a Lyft driver to give him a ride to a bar on Main Street, CHP public-affairs Officer Kevin Pearlstein said. Deputies found him at the tavern about an hour later and arrested him.According to court testimony, Milonis was arrested for DUI six months before the fatal accident when he allegedly drove drunk and hit a fence.The preliminary hearing will continue Wednesday. When it's over, Judge John Thompson will decide whether enough evidence was presented to order Milonis to stand trial. The defendant faces 40 years to life in prison if convicted. 2067
