Their last minute pitches and speeches are happening this weekend at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina. Republican candidates, staff, and volunteers say they are ready to shake things up in Sacramento. “I will be the loyal opposition to the wayward liberals of the Legislature,” Lt. Governor candidate, Cole Harris said, at the candidate forum. “Jerry Brown has certainly left a mark in our state over the years,” Judge Steven Bailey said. The State Attorney General said Brown has not been the leader they had hoped for."We've had eight years of Jerry Brown,” Gubernatorial candidate, John Cox said. “Poverty has soared, the cost of living has soared, taxes have soared, so we're excited for the chance to change all of that."Republican Gubernatorial  candidates, John Cox of Rancho Santa Fe, and Travis Allen of Huntington Beach have until Sunday to pitch to the nearly 1,000 member GOP delegation in San Diego this weekend, to get the prized official party endorsement.They only get that if they win 60% of the votes cast at the convention tomorrow. With the endorsement, both men say the will be ready to fight head-on against Democratic frontrunner, Gavin Newsom. And if elected as Governor, both promised to rid both the controversial Gas tax increase the State's Sanctuary law. "These are the issues that affect every single Californian, regardless of political party,” Gubernatorial candidate, Travis Allen said. Allen said he has supported President Trump from the beginning.  While Cox did not vote for Trump in 2016, he eventually pledged his support of the President. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The high temperatures, dry brush, and low humidity are leading to elevated fire danger in San Diego County this week.Cal Fire San Diego is asking everyone to be prepared for the possibility of a wildfire igniting.“We depend on the public to be careful; we depend on the public to be prepared at a moment’s notice to evacuate,” said Cal Fire Captain, Isaac Sanchez.“The fact that the winds aren’t there, it does not help us sleep at night; we’re still very dry. It’s still October, and we know that even though there aren’t winds now, we can bet money that there will be winds later.”As fire danger remains a threat across the county, families braved the heat taking schoolwork outside at Mast Park in Santee, after being stuck at home for months.“It’s so much easier for the kids to stay motivated on getting their work done,” Jennifer Sailler. “It’s harder to stay inside our home with the AC running than it is to be outside in the warm heat.”The heat is also keeping business going for some.“My job requires me to have a close relationship with snakes and the sun,” said Alex Trejo, So-Cal Rattlesnake Removal. “When it’s hot, what they’re actually doing is trying to find shelter. “Trejo removes rattlesnakes from properties and relocates them to areas where they can have a second chance at life.He said he’s been getting more calls for rattlesnake removals in the East County during the hot weather.“It’s very important to understand the nature of the snake; the snake is not out to hurt people, the snake is a survival expert,” he said. “My priority is making sure families are safe during this heatwave because they will be coming on people’s properties right now.”The heat advisory will remain in effect until 5 PM Friday. 1757

SAN DIEGO (KGTV/CNS) - Opening statements were delivered Thursday in the civil trial between NFL quarterback Drew Brees and a La Jolla jeweler who allegedly sold the football pro and his wife diamonds far above their actual value.Brees took the stand to describe the close relationship he says he had with the store owner. "He always talked about it as being an investment," said Brees. "Something that you could see appreciate in value."The lawsuit, filed in San Diego Superior Court last year, accuses Vahid Moradi and his company, CJ Charles Jewelers, of selling Brees and his wife Brittany million worth of diamonds between 2012 to 2016. 653

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - San Diego County has given the green light on day camps reopening for the summer and some are moving forward, some are going virtual, and others have made the decision to cancel summer camp plans altogether.A major camp, the YMCA, has been making plans to reopen during the summer for the past few months, and a spokesperson said when they opened online enrollment, some camps filled up within half an hour. There are still camps available at all ten locations, though.“It’s showing us that there’s definitely a need and people are really excited for camp, which is great,” said Nat Corrall, YMCA Association Director of Child and Youth Development.She said they’ll be implementing the County’s rules, including practicing social distancing, taking temperatures upon arrival and keeping kids interacting only with their small group rather than a larger group. She said they already have more than 100 social distancing activities planned.“At the end of the day, it is still camp, it just looks a little different,” said Corrall.On the opposite spectrum, Outpost Summer Camps has canceled camp altogether. This camp, on average, sees 1,200 kids, with up to 1,500 in a good year. This year, they opened up registration January 1 and by the time they made the decision to cancel camp in April, already had around 600 kids enrolled.Outpost Summer Camps Executive Director and Owner Dr. Kelly Jones said they gave full refunds and are feeling the financial hit. She said they decided to cancel camp in early April rather than wait and take a risk because of the level of uncertainty. She also said their camp has a foundation of interactive games so a summer of social distancing wouldn’t be the same.“This was going to be such a new level of things that were unknown, uncontrollable and then really potentially unsafe,” said Jones. “It would just sound so sad to say ‘be apart, don’t touch each other, don’t be so close.’ That’s sad for kids. Usually we see kids together and we smile and we go aw and they’re holding hands and they’re arm in arm.”She said she and her husband typically donate ,000 to ,000 to a scholarship program to send kids to their camp but are unsure if they’ll be able to do that because of the financial hit this year. In response, camp families have donated ,377 to the fund to help send kids in 2021.Jones also said they typically increase fees year to year to make up for inflation, but they're not sure what they'll do in 2021. She did say they'll be redoing their terms and conditions for the refund policy.A third San Diego summer camp is taking a different step: moving online. Tech Adventure Camp has hosted camps featuring tech adventures, robotics, virtual reality, artificial intelligence and more in San Diego for about six years. Executive Director Dr. Korey Sewell said they knew the summer wouldn’t be normal in April and realized they would have to adapt. He said hands-on learning is important for tech education, so they’ve created a new type of program.“What if we had some experiences where we allow you to do the things at home and keep going at home?” he said.They created a virtual camp. Kids have at-home robotics kits to build. A portion of camp will be in a group video class, some will be one-on-one time with an instructor and the rest will be tutorial videos. He said this year, they’re also feeling the financial hit, but they hope to grow this virtual setting into a hybrid class that can be used in future summers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) San Diego real estate icon Doug Manchester lost his nomination to be the ambassador to the Bahamas after a series of emails that may have implied pay for play proposition, according to a new report.The report, from CBS News, uncovered an email exchange between Manchester and Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel. The exchange came just days after Manchester returned from a humanitarian trip to the Bahamas to provide post Hurricane Dorian aid. President Trump nominated Manchester to the ambassadorship in 2017.
