INDIANAPOLIS -- Friday was a busy day for Vice President Mike Pence Friday, as he made several stops in the Indianapolis area.First, the vice president and second lady visited with soldiers from the Indiana National Guard's 38th Infantry Division at Stout Field Indiana National Guard Training Center. The soldiers were training in a command and control exercise to maintain their readiness."We are here because tomorrow is Armed Forces Day. Today we are grateful for everyone who puts on the uniform, including in our all-volunteer Army. Whether you put on the uniform to protect your community at home or whether you put on the uniform to protect the nation, I assure you that the people of this country are grateful and proud of your service," said Vice President Pence. 790

Is the Oprah Winfrey halo starting to fade from Weight Watchers?Weight Watchers shares fell nearly 15 percent Tuesday after the company reported a decline in subscribers between the first and second quarters. But the market may be overreacting to a calendar problem. For the past few years, Weight Watchers has reported a similar dip in subscribers during that period. The rolls grow again as the year progresses, which makes sense.People are often gung-ho about exercising, eating better and losing weight right after the winter holidays. But New Year's resolutions can be hard to maintain in the spring and summer.Even though some subscribers drop out in the first few months of the year, total subscribers are actually way up since Winfrey joined. The base grew 28 percent from a year ago to 4.5 million. In the third quarter of 2015, the company had fewer than 2.6 million subscribers.Despite the big drop in the stock Tuesday, the company's latest profits actually topped forecasts, and it raised its outlook.Shares in the company are up nearly 80 percent this year and have skyrocketed more than 1,000 percent since Winfrey first invested about million.Weight Watchers has done an extraordinary job over the past few years of making the company's programs more exciting for a broader base of people, particularly since Mindy Grossman — formerly of HSN — took over as CEO last year. The new Weight Watchers Freestyle program lets you eat a wider variety of food. Weight Watchers has also partnered with meditation company Headspace to provide exclusive content on the Weight Watchers app to its subscribers. It's all about wellness, not necessarily how many pounds you've lost.Grossman said during an earnings call with analysts Monday evening that beginning next January, no artificial ingredients will appear in any Weight Watchers-branded products. And she quoted Winfrey, who said at a Weight Watchers event in February that "healthy is the new skinny."In addition to Winfrey, who is also a board member and the company's third largest investor with a 5 percent stake worth about 0 million, Weight Watchers has brought on actor Kevin Smith, music star DJ Khaled and celebrity chef Eric Greenspan as "ambassadors" for the company. So there is no issues with Oprah's halo. Weight Watchers still looks pretty healthy. 2337

In the wake of an increase of high-profile school shootings and seemingly round-the-clock news coverage of gun violence, some students are preparing for school in ways their parents never were: bulletproof backpacks.Companies that sell products that offer increased protection from gunfire say they have seen an uptick in sales. That includes Bulletsafe, a Troy, Mich.-based company that sells a panel that can be inserted into most backpacks for added protection.“I think its main use is for people to sleep better at night,” Tom Nardone of Bulletsafe said. “Honestly, I don’t believe they need one right now,” he said. “I think most the people who are buying them are buying them because a parent is afraid.”Nardone’s product is marketed as a notebook-sized bulletproof backpack panel capable of stopping all handgun rounds up to a .44 magnum. He’s the first to admit that the likelihood that your child is near your backpack at the exact moment a shooting happens is slim. Still, parents are buying them with hopes that it’s an added layer of protection in that worst-case scenario.“I’m a dad, too,” Nardone said. “I don’t want to live in a world where my kid needs a bulletproof backpack.”Scripps station WXYZ in Detroit test a backpack with the Bulletsafe backpack panel inside it, and true to its promotion, it stopped rounds from both a 9mm and a .45 magnum. When tested with a higher-powered rifle outside of the specs that the panel is graded to stop, the bullet unsurprisingly penetrated the panel. While the thought of a school shooting may seem unrealistic to some, the reality is that Michigan holds the unwanted distinction as the No. 1 school on the “State of Concern” report released this week by the Educator’s School Safety Network. The report described that during the 2017-2018 school year, more than half of all school-based threats and incidents of violence occurred in 10 states.Michigan tops the list because of a gigantic spike in school threats. The problem became more visible after the Parkland, Florida school shooting. Accoeding ot the Macomb County prosecutor's office, 60 juveniles and 12 young adults were charged with felonies in connection with school threat cases.“There is zero tolerance for that behavior,” Derek Miller, the chief of operations for the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office said. “You’re dealing with school safety, faculty safety, these copy-cat threats and threats to children will never be tolerated by Eric Smith, or this office.”While the uptick in threats occurred following the Parkland shooting, experts note that Michigan was already trending up in the sheer number of threats before that shooting.Amanda Klinger, the director of operations for the Educator’s School Safety Network, says that more needs to be done.“Educators are really feeling the sting of this,” Klinger said. “This pull on their time, resources and interruption to instruction.”The data collected by ESSN showed that Michigan averages roughly 20 threats per 1 million students. A number of states average less than a dozen threats, some less than 5.While the data doesn’t explain why threats are increasing, it does shine a light on the discussion. Klinger said she hopes that it starts a conversation that goes beyond adding security measures to schools, but training people to see warning signs of violence.“It is easier to buy a metal detector and stand in front of your parents and say, ‘Hey look, we’re working on school safety,’” Klinger said. “It’s a lot more difficult to say we have trained all of our educators in how to look at red flags.”If you’d like to know more about Bulletsafe’s bulletproof backpack panel you can click, here. For more information about the ESSN study that listed Michigan as the number one, “State of Concern,” you can find a complete look at the data, here. 3879

INDIANAPOLIS – A veteran and retired postal worker missed his funeral after his remains were lost in the mail delivery process. The ashes of Richard Nelson, who once served in the Navy, remain missing.Years after leaving the military, Nelson headed for Arizona and left specific instructions to his family on how he wanted services handled following his death. In July, the funeral home in Arizona mailed Nelson’s remains on August 1, and the tracking number stated it was to arrive in Indianapolis on August 2.Nelson’s nephew, Scott Hare, had plans to drive the ashes to Michigan for services – but he never received the package. The memorial service went on as scheduled and the cemetery plot next to his parents had to be refilled until further notice."I have to keep telling people I don't know anything, there's no closure,” said Hare.Hare said his moments of sorrow were overcome with pride.“At some point, I had to laugh,” said Hare. “He retired from the post office and was lost at the post office. I'm sure he's laughing somewhere.”The post office released a statement: 1083

Instagram is continuing its efforts to combat bullying on the platform. On Tuesday, the company said it is starting to use new machine learning technology to proactively detect bullying in photos and captions. Those posts will be sent to Instagram's Community Operations team for human review."Online bullying is complex, and we know we have more work to do to further limit bullying and spread kindness on Instagram," Adam Mosseri, the new head of Instagram, said in a blog post.Mosseri was named Instagram's chief last week following the exit of co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. This is Mosseri's first announcement in his new role.An Instagram spokesperson said the technology can detect bullying and harassment such as attacks on a person's appearance or character and threats to someone's wellbeing or health. For example, the tech can identify bullying tactics such as comparing, ranking and rating images and captions, such as a split-screen image in which a person is compared to someone else in a negative way. It's unclear what else the technology can detect and whether it would work on images without captions. This feature has started to roll out and will continue to in the coming weeks. The company, owned by Facebook, is also launching a "Kindness Camera Effect" in partnership with dancer Maddie Ziegler. Anyone who follows Ziegler will have the camera effect automatically. In selfie mode, hearts will appear on the screen. In rear mode, kind comments in different languages will appear. You can tag friends, too.Earlier this year, Instagram announced it would filter out bullying comments that aim to harass or upset users. That feature built on a tool introduced last year that blocks offensive comments, and a filter that removes spam in comments. Starting Tuesday, the bullying comment filter will also apply to Live Videos on Instagram.Users can also turn off comments on individual Instagram posts and block posts with certain keywords. 1975
