SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Carlsbad mother believes the social isolation created by the pandemic was one factor in the suicide attempt of her 11-year-old son.A photo shows Jessie, 11, playing tetherball outside her home two Thursdays ago. Hours after the photo was taken, his mother Tara says her son vomited.Soon after, an ambulance was rushing him to the hospital. In her kitchen cupboard was a nearly empty Costco-sized bottle of ibuprofen."It was a 500-pill bottle, and we estimate he took 400 pills," said Tara.At the hospital, Jesse couldn't breathe on his own. His kidneys failed, but doctors were able to save Jesse."It's a miracle, so thankful," said a tearful Tara.The grateful mother is now in search of answers. She talked to her son in the hospital."He said he didn't see that there was much worth living for. He felt like there were too many things stacked up against him," said Tara.Tara believes one of those things has been the social isolation caused by the pandemic. After his family moved, Jesse ended up after a new school in the fall. Tara says his old friends 'ghosted' him."I would encourage him to try to make friends in the neighborhood, and he'd say things like 'Why bother?'" said Tara.Tara thought he was just getting adjusted. Stan Colllins, a suicide prevention specialist with the San Diego County Suicide Prevention Council, says social isolation can cut kids off from the support they lean on to deal with stressors, big and small."We do have data to show there has been an increase in suicidal thoughts among youth," said Collins.In Jesse's case, those thoughts led to action. Tara says she's sharing her family's story in hopes of helping another family."Please lock up your medicaton ... Talk to your kids and see how they're doing. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego-based Institute of Public Strategies reminded residents Tuesday that reduced alcohol usage plays a large part in suicide prevention and increased mental health, especially among teenagers and young adults.According to the San Diego County Medical Examiner, alcohol use was a factor in 30.8 percent of county suicides in 2016. Data from the National Alliance on Mental Health shows that roughly 29 percent of people with a diagnosed mental illness abuse drugs and/or alcohol. The abuse of alcohol can mask conditions like anxiety and depression, and can also impair judgment and spur impulsive behavior -- two factors that lead to suicidal tendencies, according to IPS.The risk for teenagers and young adults is especially high because alcohol and drug abuse can hamper mental and physical development. California school districts with students in grades 7-12 are required to develop policies that aid in preventing suicide and reducing the risk of suicide. Teachers are also trained to recognize the signs of drug and alcohol abuse among teens and young adults.According to IPS, which focuses on public health and safety issues, and the San Diego County Office of Education, helping youth learn about the dangers of alcohol abuse is one of the most important suicide prevention tools educators can use."It is common to see substance use disorder coupled with mental disorders,'' said Heather Nemour, project specialist for the SDCOE's Student Support Services department. "Understanding the role of substance use in suicidal behavior and how to intervene early is a critical component of school staff training in reducing youth suicides.''Local policy can also help reduce alcohol abuse in all demographics, according to the nonprofit, which advocates taking steps to increase alcohol taxes, limit alcohol sales to a certain number of outlets and enforce limits on when alcohol can be sold, using tools like blue laws, to promote healthy lifestyle choices and reduce the risks of abuse and suicide. 2038

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 105-year-old World War II veteran is set to receive his college diploma 83 years after graduating.Bill Vogt, who was one of the first students to set foot on San Diego State University's campus after it opened in 1931, will receive his diploma in commerce retro-dated to Feb. 1, 1935, on Thursday.Vogt graduated from SDSU mid-year in 1935 but never got a printed diploma. He is the last remaining SDSU student to have attended classes at the university's old campus in University Heights, according to the school.The special presentation comes after Vogt elected to become a lifetime member of SDSU Alumni in May, a special alumni program offered by the university. He's also believed to be the oldest person ever to become an Alumni lifetime member, the school added.The WWII veteran served in the US Navy, and also served in the Korea and Vietnam wars. He's spent several years working on the East Coast as well since his graduation. 984
