Residents who live nearby have been fighting the project and hope to convince the councilmembers to block it.The project, called "The Preserve at Torrey Highlands," would go on a piece of land south of Sr-56 at Camino Del Sur. Locals call the property "The Notch" and say it's a mystery why the 11-acre parcel was left out of protected zone when voters approved the Preserve in 1996.The best explanation, several residents told 10News, is that the land was owned by the Catholic Church, which planned to build on the property. The Church project was approved but never built and the Church sold the land in 2015.A spokesperson for the developer, Cisterra, told 10News that the land was always meant for development and that an office park is much-needed in the area: "The Preserve at Torrey Highlands will help grow the innovation economy by creating a place for nearly 2,000 high-quality, high-paying jobs."Opponents say voters intended any development on the land to be low-rise and fit the character of the neighborhood. 1235

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Thousands of local college students scrambled Tuesday to pack up their belongings and make travel arrangements after San Diego State University and the University of San Diego informed students they had roughly 24 hours to vacate their dorms.In a campus-wide email Tuesday, SDSU said students needed to move out by 7 p.m. Wednesday unless they had a hardship.SDSU said it rapidly expedited its move-out plans after seven Bay Area counties instituted shelter-in-place orders to combat the coronavirus. The university said it was “anticipating that more cities will follow.”“Everyone is shocked. This hasn’t really happened before so no one really knows how to deal with it,” said SDSU student Courtney Robinson.Sophomore Samantha Horan added, “People are just scared and they’re trying to get home as quick as they can.”The university said students with health or safety risks, those who could not return home, and students without an alternate residence could remain on campus. Last week, SDSU had encouraged students to consider staying home after spring break. While some students said they anticipated the move-out order, others were caught off guard.“I was planning on staying [during spring break] so I had nothing packed at all,” said student John Magee.Magee was trying to decide which items to pack in his car for the drive to San Jose, and which to leave behind.“If we leave anything, will it be tossed out? Or how will we get it?” he wondered.The university said students could leave non-essential belongings behind “if absolutely necessary.” “However, it cannot be determined at this time when you will be able to collect any left belongings,” SDSU said in a statement.The university said students will receive a credit for any paid rent and unused meal plans.Other local universities had already encouraged their students to leave dorms in the coming days. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The number of 16-24 year olds looking for jobs is rising across the country, almost getting back to the level it was at before the recession.According to numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 20.89 million teens and young adults had jobs in the summer of 2017. That made it the 7th straight year of employment growth in that industry.Similarly, the unemployment rate for people aged 16-24 fell for the 7th straight year. It was at 9.6%, the lowest it had been since 2000. While there still aren't as many teens and young adults working as there was in the 1950's, 60's and 70's, it's a sign that more are looking for, and finding jobs."I'm Saving for a Car"Like many of his peers, Coronado High School Junior Quinn Perez plans to work this summer. He already has a job lined up at Holland's Bicycles."I've worked there for about 2 years now and I've worked my wya up to one of the manager positions," Quinn says.His goal is simple, to save enough for a car."I've always been a fan of Camaros," he says, before adding, "But I'll probably go for a Honda or Jetta or something like that. A little more in my price range."Other students just like having their own money to spend, like Anna Hinz, who is still looking for a job for the summer."It makes me feel like I have a little control over everything I do, rather than my parents making plans for me.""It's all about the attitude"But for the people who do the hiring, why you're working can be as big of an indicator of success as anything.Patti Woods is the Talent Acquisition Supervisor for the YMCA. She oversees hiring of around 1,500 teens and young adults each summer to work as counselors and lifeguards.She says your attitude is as important as anything else."Skills can be learned," she says. "I want people who are positive, flexible and willing to take feedback."Woods advises teens and young adults to start their job search early. The YMCA does most of their summer hiring in the spring, because they have thousands of applicants to consider."Don't think you need to wait for the summer to find a summer job," she says. If you wait for summer, a lot of those jobs will be gone already."Woods says the Y still has some open positions. Other fields, like retail and restaurants still have lots of openings as well. A recent search of sites like jobs.com and Monster.com for the keywords "Teen Jobs, San Diego" turned up hundreds of jobs.
