SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An Arizona man who carried out a series of knifepoint rapes in the city of San Diego 24 years ago, as well as two rapes in Riverside County in 2002 and 2004, was sentenced Thursday to 50 years to life in prison.Christopher Vanbuskirk, 47, of Goodyear, pleaded guilty last year to six rape counts for attacking the women on four occasions between August and November of 1995 in San Diego, as well as two women in the Coachella Valley area of Riverside County in March 2002 and November 2004.Prosecutors said the four San Diego cases occurred twice in the Tierrasanta neighborhood, once in Pacific Beach and once near San Diego Mesa College. Vanbuskirk was identified as a suspect through public-access genealogical databases, which prosecutors described as similar to the technology used to identify and capture Joseph James DeAngelo, otherwise known as the Golden State Killer.RELATED: Suspect in San Diego, Riverside County rape series pleads guiltyPolice said DNA evidence previously linked the San Diego and Riverside county cases, but the identity of the perpetrator was not established until last year.Vanbuskirk was arrested in his home state in May.Two of his victims from the San Diego area spoke at his sentencing hearing, as well as the mother of his first victim.Jane Doe 1's mother said her daughter was attacked at age 18 while jogging on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, while Jane Doe 2 and Jane Doe 3 said they were attacked in their homes. All the victims described being attacked by a masked Vanbuskirk who threatened to kill them if they screamed, leaving them with emotional trauma that rendered them constantly in fear.Jane Doe 2 said, "The rapist lived free for 24 years, while the victims were imprisoned in our own minds."Vanbuskirk spoke on his own behalf, saying "I do apologize sincerely" to the victims and that he hoped "that they can find it in their hearts to one day forgive me." He also apologized to his family "for the shame I've brought them." 1998

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities Tuesday publicly identified a 15-year-old boy who was fatally shot last week in Barrio Logan.Patrol personnel responding to reports of gunfire in the area of Chicano Park shortly before 10 p.m. Friday found a large gathering of people standing in a parking lot and a motorist beginning to drive away in a silver sedan, according to police.Seeing the arriving officers, the group, including two people in the car, scattered, Lt. Andra Brown said.RELATED: 15-year-old fatally shot near Chicano ParkInside the vehicle, police found Brian Romo of San Diego, who had been shot in the upper body. Paramedics took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and no arrests have been made in the case."While the investigation continues, very little is known about the circumstances leading up to the (victim's) death," Brown said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An ex-con who opened fire in the Gaslamp District two years ago, wounding an off-duty sheriff's deputy and a bystander, was sentenced Wednesday to 71 years to life in state prison.Ray Pitoau, 39, was convicted last month of two counts of assault with a firearm for the Aug. 7, 2017, shooting that injured Deputy Jason Philpot, who was walking through downtown with his two brothers following a Metallica concert at Petco Park. Also injured was bystander Vladimir Shvets, a passerby in San Diego for a convention.Pitoau was also convicted of a lesser charge of assault on the deputy's younger sibling, Joshua.Prosecutors said Philpot and his group walked past Pitoau, who got into an argument with the deputy's sibling on Island Avenue near Sixth Avenue just after 1 a.m.RELATED: Man convicted of assault with gun in Gaslamp shooting that wounded deputyPitoau testified that he pulled out a gun in self-defense because a group of men, including Jason Philpot, were advancing on him. He testified that he and the deputy both grabbed onto the gun, leading it to fire as they grappled over the weapon.Jason Philpot testified that he tried to wrap his arms around Pitoau and get the gun away, but the defendant was able to pull the trigger, wounding the deputy in the chest and right arm. One of the rounds ricocheted off the sidewalk and struck Shvets.Pitoau was arrested about a month later in Mexico.RELATED: Man convicted in Gaslamp shooting involving off-duty deputy sentencedSan Diego County Superior Court Judge Melinda J. Lasater declined to dismiss a number of allegations that added years to Pitoau's sentence due to his numerous prior convictions for crimes dating back to 1991, including burglary, assault, and being a felon in possession of ammunition.Deputy District Attorney Michael Reilly said Pitoau had demonstrated a history of re-offending each time he was released from prison and that "he knew better" than to bring a gun to the Gaslamp Quarter that day.Defense attorney Jessica Marshall said evidence at trial showed the Philpots and other members of their group had been drinking and were being aggressive, with the attorney arguing Pitoau "is not the only reason this happened."RELATED: Gaslamp deputy shooting suspect escapes Spring Valley SWAT standoffJurors deadlocked on the assault counts in Pitoau's two previous trials, though one of those juries convicted Pitoau on three felony firearm possession counts. 2459
