A group of scientists have discovered 280-million-year-old fossil tracks in a remote area of the Grand Canyon that predate the the appearance of the earliest dinosaurs, according to a press release from the Grand Canyon National Park. According to the press release, an international team of paleontologists discovered "extremely well-preserved trackways of primitive tetrapods (four-footed animals) which inhabited an ancient desert environment."Paleontologists recognized the fossil tracks and say they were produced by a "long-extinct relative of very early reptiles... of extinct tetrapods known as diadectomorphs, a primitive group that possessed characteristics of both amphibians and reptiles."The characteristics of the newly discovered tracks suggest the creature that made the prints walked on all four legs, with each foot containing five "clawless digits.""Although the actual track maker for the Grand Canyon footprints may never be known, the Grand Canyon trackways preserve the travel of a very early terrestrial vertebrate," the press release stated. 1079

Thousands, if not millions, of employees have suddenly found themselves without work this week as businesses are scaling back operations amid the spread of coronavirus. As states are ordering non-essential employees to stay away from their jobs, unemployment is skyrocketing nationally. For instance, in Ohio, the state went from 5,000 unemployment claims last week to 140,000 claims this week. But as some industries dwindle, others are in need of help. Here are a few: 7-Eleven Convenience store 7-Eleven said it is actively seeking to fill 20,000 positions amid a rush to clear store shelves. 7-Eleven said it expects to encounter a rush of orders through its mobile app, and are looking for store clerks to help fulfill delivery orders. "7-Eleven is a neighborhood store and it's our priority to serve the communities in which we operate during this unprecedented crisis," said 7-Eleven President and Chief Executive Officer Joe DePinto. "Between 7-Eleven, Inc. and our franchised business owners, we expect as many as 20,000 store employees to be hired in the coming months. This will provide job opportunities and ensure 7-Eleven stores remain clean and in-stock with the goods our customers need during this critical time." To apply with 7-Eleven, click 1276

The land of the free gained almost 200 new members this week in Colorado, and to say they’re excited to become new US citizens is an understatement. “It’s been a lifelong dream to become a US citizen, and it just happened,” said Katrin Redford, a new US citizen originally from Germany. “I want to get a better life here,” said Samuel Rodriguez, who came to the US from MexicoShang Wu came to the US more than 40 years ago and is finally getting his citizenship. “It feels great. It’s honored and it’s the right thing to do for me,” he said. Their excitement is a reward after what can be a long, grueling process. Some people think it takes a little too long. “We’re seeing processing times that are published by US CIS online for the Denver field office in terms of 10 and half to 22 and a half months,” said Jennifer Kain-Rios. Kain-Rios is an immigration attorney. She says processing delays are a problem and it’s been getting worse. “Over the course of the past couple years, we have definitely seen naturalization applications taking much longer than they had in the past,” said Kain-Rios. The US Commission on Civil Rights recently discovered the same thing. “The report is intended to just bring attention to this issue. Our hope is that the US Commission on Civil Rights will be able share it with Congress and other stake holders to ensure that the issue can be addressed adequately,” said Alvina Earnhart US Commission on Civil Rights, Colorado Advisory Committee. Earnhart sits on the Commission’s Colorado Advisory Committee. She says the application processing delays are more than just an inconvenience. They’re affecting people’s rights. “When we held the hearing in February, one of the panelists pointed out if an individual did not submit an application by March of this year, that there was no chance that they would be able to participate in 2020 election,” said Earnhart. As for why there’s a backlog, there’s no simple answer. The commission’s report found a handful of possible reasons that include changing policies and inadequate resources. The USCIS says the problem is simply an increase in applications. “Processing times impact people in very real ways. I think the most significant concern for many people is a desire to be able to vote,” said Kain-Rios. That desire is so strong, people were registering to vote the second the citizenship ceremony was over. “It is very important to participate, in every country you know, not just here,” said Rodriguez. US Citizen and Immigration Services, which handles citizenship applications, says they’ve brought those long wait times down. “Well the average after this month, will be just under seven months and we do have some number of outlier applications that take longer, but one the average, we’re about seven months,” said Kristie Goldinger, the Colorado District Director with US Citizenship and Immigration Services. We confirmed the new processing times on USCIS's website. But, seven and a half months is still longer than the six months it’s supposed to take. And the high end of the range is still more than a year. And that extra time puts extra stress on the people going through the process. 3207

Protests are erupting across the country. People are taking to the streets in major American cities calling for change after George Floyd, a black man, died in Minnesota after being restrained by a white police officer. Cameras captured the Minneapolis police officer with his knee on Floyd’s neck with Floyd pleading, “I can’t breathe.” Days after his death, Floyd’s words echoed through downtown Denver with hundreds of people coming together, creating a human wall and blocking freeway access. “The fact that they say that they’re scared or whatever, mother (cuss word) don’t get the job,” said US Army veteran Aubrey Rose. With an American flag hanging upside down on his shoulder, Rose has gone from defending his country to questioning those policing it. “This is important because I risked my life to uphold the constitution and black people’s rights are being walked all over,” he said. While Rose called what happened in Minnesota “ugly” and “unjust,” he believes these protests are both “beautiful” and “necessary.” “It really makes me proud to be an American right now,” he said. “Even with everything going on people came out to support.” Support by protesters making their voices heard. And as the crowd grew and protesters started yelling at police, law enforcement put on riot gear. People were quick to question that decision. “Where was all your gear when (cuss word) white people were storming up to the (cuss word) capitol with AK-47s?,” asked one protester. “Black people peacefully protest and we are reprimanded for it.” While holding signs saying black live matter and chanting blue lives murder, people stopped by this protest, started sitting on top of the cars, giving them a unique view.“I feel like with this outbreak there’s going to be a lot of rebirth within the country,” one man said. “You can’t breathe sometimes but you must move forward.”On Friday, the former officer seen kneeling on Floyd's neck, Derek Chauvin, was arrested and charged with the 36-year-old's murder and manslaughter. 2038

A 22-year-old man in Alabama was sentenced to life in prison in the 1980s after he stole about from a bakery. After more than three decades behind bars, he is now set to walk free.As a judge in Alabama sentenced Alvin Kennard to time served on Wednesday, video from the courtroom showed his family raising their fists into the air."All of us cried. All of us cried," Patricia Jones, Kennard's niece, told 421
