SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A choir group from Carlsbad High School got the chance of a lifetime Tuesday night when they took the stage with a legendary rock band.Students from the choir gave themselves an opportunity to perform with award-winning band Foreigner by entering a contest from local radio station KGB-FM in May.“We just sent in a video to KGB, and they gave us a call and said, ‘Hey, you guys won,’” said Carlsbad High choir director Jessie Bullock.“Our teacher told us one day in class and we were like, ‘Oh my gosh. There’s no way! That’s amazing!’” said student Garret Avilez.To the members of Foreigner, public school music education is important.Bassist Jeff Pilson said with tight budgets, public music programs are often the first to get cut. Those programs personally inspired his career.“I started playing the cello when I was in 5th grade and happened to end up with an amazing music teacher,” said Pilson.None of the students were born until decades after Foreigner made a name for itself worldwide. Even the band members admitted the songs are more famous than the band itself.“A lot of these kids don’t realize how many Foreigner songs they know just by being around their parents,” said Pilson.“Some of us want to do performing when we're older and it's just like, being able to get an experience before getting into the industry is really cool,” said student Jamie Polmar.On Tuesday night, the Carlsbad High choir members finally shared the stage with the band at their concert at Chula Vista’s Mattress Firm Amphitheatre, and they sung their hearts out.Foreigner donated 0 to Carlsbad High School’s choir program. 1644

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Three people suffered non-life threatening gunshot wounds this morning in the Mount Hope Community of San Diego, a police officer said.A group of people were in the area of Market and Denby streets about 1:45 a.m. when several gunshots were heard and three people were shot, said Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.A 39-year-old man was shot in the abdomen, a 32-year-old man was shot multiple times in the buttocks and legs and a 30-year-old man suffered a graze wound to his lips, Heims said.All three men were transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening gunshot wounds and police had no suspect information. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A controversial Target store opened its doors Tuesday night in North Park, on University Avenue at the corner of Ray Street. Not everyone was on board when plans for the two-story Target were announced. North Park residents worried about the impact the retailer would have on local businesses and on parking in an already crowded neighborhood. There was also frustration when Target painted over a popular mural that had been on the side of the building for years. San Diego State University professor Dana Kuhn said economically, Target could have a positive impact on the community by creating jobs and boosting businesses nearby. Kuhn said people spending money at Target would inevitably mean they spend money in surrounding businesses. Kuhn also explained that Target will provided goods and services the community needs and that the money spent will stay in North Park. Target says the new store created 60 jobs and many of the employees do live nearby. Target is officially open as of Tuesday night but a grand opening for the community is scheduled for Sunday, March 17. 1106

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Security is tight at San Diego's mosques following an arson attack at a mosque in Escondido early Sunday morning. Someone set fire to the Islamic Center of Escondido on West Sixth Avenue around 3 a.m, but a handful of worshippers was inside, and the group put out the fire before it caused any significant damage. When police arrived, they found a message in graffiti referencing the recent shootings at mosques in New Zealand. Monday afternoon, two San Diego Police Department patrol cars sat in the parking lot of the Islamic Center of San Diego. Directors say worshipers are nervous. "They accept the faith of what happened, others are very, you know, worried as well. It's a mixed mood," said Khelil Ouznali, vice chair of the board of directors. The center already has surveillance cameras all over the property and guards on duty, but now the directors are considering hiring armed guards. "We are looking into improving security, you know, we are looking into different options based on the feedback from our community," said Ouznali. On the campus of San Diego State University Monday, dozens of students rallied against hate. They marched through the student union chanting, "No hate at state, Muslims are here to stay, no hate at state, Muslims are here to stay!" Faduma Mohamed is a member of the Muslim Student Association. "It just goes to show there's a lot of hate against us, but although some people can attempt to destroy Muslims, Islam itself the religion, cannot be destroyed," said Mohamed. The group posted pictures of the lives lost in the shooting rampages at the mosques in New Zealand and the attack at a Jewish Synagogue in Pittsburgh. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 21-year-old man was hospitalized Monday after he was stabbed in the back and arm by a home intruder in the Oak Park neighborhood, police said.It happened around 11:55 p.m. Sunday at a home on Fauna Drive, located off College Grove Drive just northwest of state Route 94, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.The victim went downstairs to get some milk for his daughter and found a man standing in his kitchen, Buttle said.A struggle ensued and the victim was stabbed in the back and the right arm before his assailant fled, the officer said.The victim's wife drove him to a hospital for treatment of his injuries, which were not believed to be life-threatening, Buttle said.No detailed suspect descriptions were immediately available.Detectives with the San Diego Police Department's southeastern division were investigating the stabbing. 872
