But disasters caused by typhoon Megi have claimed 11 lives in Taiwan, across the Taiwan Strait. The typhoon has weakened into a strong tropical storm after landing at Liu'ao Town of Zhangpu County, southern Fujian, packing winds of up to 140 km/h.The storm is expected to move northward at 10 km per hour and further weaken to become a tropical depression, according to the National Meteorological Center. The cloud cluster brought by the storm, however, will be hovering over the southern coast of Fujian for some time and is expected to dump more rain in the areas, according to the Fujian provincial meteorological bureau.Zhangpu received 243 mm of rainfall, and neighboring Yunxiao County recorded 332 mm between 8 a.m. Friday and 5:30 p.m. Saturday. The precipitation in cities of Zhangzhou, Xiamen and Quanzhou will reach 100 mm in the next 12 hours, the provincial meteorological bureau said. The storm will also be responsible for heavy rains in Fujian's neighboring provinces of Guangdong and Zhejiang.Influenced by the typhoon, 79 flights at the airport of Xiamen City, also in Fujian, had been canceled as of 8:30 a.m. Saturday, and the Dadeng Bridge, which connects Xiamen City and Dadeng Island, has been closed since 7 a.m.The Ministry of Civil Affairs said late Saturday that it has launched an emergency response by sending working groups to coordinate disaster relief efforts. Also, Sun Chunlan, Communist Party chief in Fujian, has ordered local officials to be on high alert against possible heavy rains and geological disasters.

TOKYO, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Japanese Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara said Tuesday that he will try hard to rebuild a "strategic, mutually beneficial relationship" with China.During a luncheon meeting at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan, Maehara said he will strive to mend ties with China as foreign minister. He also welcomed the agreement between Prime Minister Naoto Kan and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in Belgium Monday to resume talks between high-level officials of the two countries.Earlier in the day Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshito Sengoku expressed his hope for the improvement of Japan's relations with China."Promoting a strategic, mutually beneficial relationship and improving ties between Japan and China will be positive not only for the two countries but also for other Asian countries or countries around the world, especially for their economies," said Sengoku at a regular press conference in Tokyo.China-Japan relations have been soured recently after the Japanese Coast Guard illegally seized a Chinese fishing boat and detained the crew on Sept. 8 in waters off the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea.Japanese authorities insisted on performing a so-called domestic judicial procedure against the crew despite strong protests from the Chinese government and public. The crew and the boat were released later.
LISBON, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao concluded his state visit to Portugal on Sunday and has left the Portuguese capital of Lisbon for home. The president arrived in Lisbon on Saturday after a three-day state visit to France that began on Thursday. In Lisbon, Hu had talks with Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva and met other Portuguese leaders, exchanging views on how to deepen bilateral pragmatic cooperation. Both sides also discussed major world and regional issues of common concern.Hu and Silva agreed to work together to deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries. Chinese President Hu Jintao (L) and Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates hold a joint press conference in Lisbon, Portugal, Nov. 7, 2010. In France, Hu and his French counterpart Nicolas Sarkozy met for talks and agreed to make joint efforts to boost bilateral cooperation.Hu said in the talks that since diplomatic ties were forged 46 years ago, the China-France relationship has been characterized by its strategic and global nature and its ability to move with the times. The Chinese president called on both sides to continuously deepen mutual understanding by carrying out high-level visits and exchanges between governments, legislatures, political parties and regions. Both countries should advance with the times, be creative in practical cooperation, expand trade and try to double their trade volume by 2015, he said.During Hu's visit, China and France signed a host of cooperation agreements covering a wide range of areas, including nuclear energy, aviation, finance, energy efficiency, and environmental protection. On Thursday, China and France issued a joint statement on strengthening their comprehensive strategic partnership. The statement said the two countries should make a major contribution to peace, stability and development of the world, conform to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, promote multilateralism and respect the independent and sovereign choice for the development of each country.Analysts said that the Chinese president's state visits to France and Portugal have promoted not only bilateral cooperation, but also the development of China-Europe ties.
BEIJING, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo told Japan early Sunday morning to make a "wise political resolution" and immediately release the Chinese fishermen and fishing boat its coast guard seized earlier this week.Dai made the remarks when he summoned the Japanese Ambassador to China Uichiro Niwa in the wee hours. He was the highest-ranking Chinese official to make a response after the fishing boat and its crew were seized Tuesday in waters off the Diaoyu Islands and its captain was detained on Friday."Dai expressed solemnly (to the Japanese ambassador) the Chinese government's grave concerns and its serious and just position," said the Foreign Ministry in a statement.Dai warned Japan not to make a wrong judgement on the situation and urged it to make a "wise political resolution" and immediately release the fishermen and return the boat. The Japanese ambassador expressed that he would promptly report the Chinese position to his government, according to the statement.China decided Friday night to postpone a negotiation with Japan on the East China Sea issue, which had been scheduled for mid September, after a Japanese court ruled a 10-day detention through Sept.19 against the captain despite protests from China.Previously, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Friday summoned the Japanese ambassador and demanded Japan immediately and unconditionally release the boat and all the crew, saying China's determination to defend its sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands and the interests of the Chinese people was unswerving.Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said Friday night when announcing the postponement of the talks that the Japanese side has "ignored China's repeated solemn representations and firm opposition, and obstinately decided to put the Chinese captain under the so-called judiciary procedures."She said Japan's acts have violated the law of nations and basic international common sense, and are "ridiculous, illegal and invalid.""Japan will reap as it has sown, if it continues to act recklessly," Jiang warned. On Tuesday, two Japanese Coast Guard patrol ships and the Chinese fishing boat collided in waters off the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea. No injuries were reported, but the fishing boat was then intercepted by the Japanese patrol.
