What does defunding the police really mean? From Los Angeles to Minneapolis to New York City advocates are pushing for widespread police reform in the form of reduced police budgets. HOW MUCH WILL BE CUT?So far, American cities are taking a slow approach to the demands of advocates. Leaders in Minneapolis, the site of George Floyd's death, have called for the most significant changes with City Council agreeing to dismantle its police department. Los Angeles' Mayor is calling for 0 million budget cut. Minneapolis' City Council is exploring a 0 million cut. New York City's Comptroller has called on the Mayor to cut the NYPD by .1 billion over the next four years. Depending on the number, cuts to police departments could mean fewer officers and most likely fewer programs offered by police departments. WHERE DO ADVOCATES WANT THE MONEY TO GO?In short, leaders in the Black Lives Matter movement want the money currently allocated to police to be re-invested in communities instead. That could take the shape of city development in an often forgotten part of town or in mental health awareness campaigns. Homeless outreach and improved educational opportunities have also been mentioned. NPR recently profiled an effort in Eugene, Oregon, that dispatches social workers to certain emergency calls instead of officers. Advocates support measures like that as well. WILL CRIME INCREASE?You can't have a discussion on defunding police without exploring the possibility that crime could increase. But there is evidence that crime can actually go down with fewer police officers. A 2017 study found that when NYPD reduced its proactive policing polices in 2015 and 20`14, the number of criminal complaints filed actually decreased in New York City. The Fraternal Order of Police though disagrees. Sgt. Robert Pride, who met with President Trump at the White House this week, said he believes more officers would want to leave law enforcement if major programs were defunded. "That's not a profession I want to be apart of," Pride said. WILL THIS ACTUALLY HAPPEN?Police reform has been talked about before but never on this scale. It will also depend on whether the political pressure on city councils and mayors across the country continue. The "defund" movement is likely in its very early stages. 2316

Wildlife biologists with the Conservancy of Southwest Florida shared a shocking python find in Collier-Seminole State Forest on Thursday. An invasive Burmese python's eyes were a little bigger than its stomach when it decided to devour a white-tailed deer fawn. Officials say pythons have been known to kill and ingest large prey and this was a record breaking meal.  Officials stumbled upon the python with the massive prey inside. The biologists removed the python out of the wild into an open area and the python was stressed so it pushed the deer out of its mouth. In the photo below you can see the breathing tube and tongue of the python as it has its mouth wrapped around the deer. Biologists believe it is the largest python-to-prey ratio documented. The python was 31.5 pounds and the deer was 35 pounds; 111% of the python's mass. The findings will be published in the March 2018 issue of the Herpetological Review.“This observation is another important piece of evidence for the negative impact invasive Burmese pythons are having on native wildlife across the Greater Everglades Ecosystem” said Ian Bartoszek, Conservancy of Southwest Florida wildlife biologist. “Imagine the potential consequences to the state and federally protected Florida panther if Burmese pythons adversely affect the number of white-tailed deer, a panther’s primary prey.”Biologists are focused on the impact the python is having across the food chain. Since 2013, the Conservancy and its research partners have been conducting research to document the invasive Burmese python's biology and behavior in Collier County, including the tracking, removal and necropsy of captured pythons.Kelly Bazzle is the Digital Executive Producer at Scripps Station WFTS. WEST SENECA, N.Y. — Prosecutors have charged a West Seneca man with criminally negligent homicide after a dispute over wearing a face covering left an 80-year-old man dead.Donald Lewinski, 65, of West Seneca, was taken into custody Monday following an incident on Sept. 26 at Pamp's Red Zone Bar and Grill.According to Erie County District Attorney John Flynn, Lewinski got into a verbal confrontation with Rocco Sapienza — another regular at the bar — after Sapienza noticed Lewinski was not wearing a mask while bringing buckets of beer to a band playing outside. At one point, prosecutors said Sapienza got up and confronted Lewinski. That's when Lewinski stood up and pushed Sapienza "hard" with both hands, the D.A. said. Sapienza fell back and hit his head on the ground.Sapienza was taken to Erie County Medical Center, where he was unresponsive for four days. He died on Sept. 30.The cause of death is blunt force trauma to the head."We are all deeply saddened by the loss of Rocco. He was a part of our Red Zone family and loved by all," the owner of Pamp's Red Zone released said in a statement. "Our deepest sympathies go out to Rocco's family."Lewinski is set to appear in West Seneca Town Court Tuesday night.A celebration of life for Sapienza will take place Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Southtown Christian Center. This story was originally published by WKBW in Buffalo, New York. 1398

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Michael Womer is known as the "Gator Crusader." He posts wild videos where he gets extremely close to alligators during live shows. He said he's loved alligators since he was a child and even told his school counselor in high school he already knew he wanted to perform with gators as a teenager. He shared what he's been doing differently during the pandemic, and if he thinks alligators can sense the difference.Womer performs with a gator show in central Florida and he shares videos of his wildest antics online. He often dresses up, performs stunts and even reads to the alligators. He's perhaps most widely known for a video where he falls into a gator pit when his rope swing snaps.Womer said the alligators can tell something is different because there aren’t as many people around. 821

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Last Friday was a day for the history books at the Palm Beach Gardens Fire Rescue Station 65.For the first time, it was staffed by a shift consisting of all women."Station 65 on that day, from the top down, captain, driver, firefighter, the rescue lieutenant, the paramedic, every single person was female that day on that shift," Deputy Chief James Ippolito said. The proof is in the picture, which featured Fire Medic Kelsey Krzywada side by side with her female colleagues. She is the youngest woman in the photo, whose ages range from 20 to 50. She said it didn't take her long to find her calling"I was always interested in the medical field so medical field and something super active to help people it seemed like a perfect fit," Krzywada said. She admits that in a male-dominated field, the road wasn't easy."Fire school was definitely really hard. I'm always the smallest one, smallest height, smallest weight. It's hard to keep up with the boys. I trained as hard as I could," Krzywada said.Lucky for her, there were other women before her, like Rescue Lt. Krystyna Krakowski, to help pave the way.Krakowski understood the impact of an all-female crew, even if for one shift. WPTV Palm Beach Gardens Fire Medic Kelsey Krzywada hopes the all-female fire crew will inspire other women to become first responders. "We just thought women empowerment, girl power, how fun to have five women at the same station. It was a great day," Krakowski said. However, it was also a sad day after the death of a gender equality icon."It also happened on a day that Justice Ginsburg passed away as well," Ippolito said.As Ginsburg famously said, "Fight for the things that you care about. But do it in a way that will lead others to join you."According to Krakowski, it's already working for people like her daughter: a college student and a member of the Palm Beach Ocean Rescue."Women can do the same thing men can do," said Krakowski. "You know, we're capable of anything."And now, there are scores of other women and young girls to carry on the legacy of equality."As the years go on, and it becomes more prevalent, more girls are gonna see us and be motivated to go to fire school and EMT school and continue on through the EMS field," Krzywada said.Ippolito said Palm Beach Gardens Fire Rescue currently has 12 female employees with room for plenty more. This story was first reported by Chris Gilmore at WPTV in West Palm Beach, Florida. 2507
