CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Protests are planned over the demotion of a popular South Bay principal.Mary Rose Peralta had been principal of Chula Vista High School since 2013. Viktoria Camacho was one of her former students.“She was a great leader. She was one to walk down the hallways with a smile on her face,” Camacho said.“My freshman year of high school was 2013 and that was actually Ms. Peralta’s first year as principal. We always kind of had that ‘we started high school together’ journey,” Camacho said.Peralta was removed from her position at the end of the school year. She is now the principal at Chula Vista Middle School. Supporters, as well as a petition online, said her demotion had to do with giving her students a “creative step for graduation to give class of 2020 a warm goodbye.”ABC 10News covered the event, where the names of all 642 graduating seniors were painted on the field.A district spokesperson would not confirm that graduation had anything to do with Peralta’s demotion.“Ms. Peralta began the school year as the principal at Chula Vista Middle School. Any information behind the reason for that is a personnel matter, and as you know we can’t share specifics about that,” spokesperson Manny Rubio wrote to Team 10.Her removal came just days after Dr. Moises Aguirre became acting superintendent of the Sweetwater Union High School District. He replaced Dr. Karen Janney after she was placed on paid administrative leave amid an investigation into the district’s multi-million dollar budget shortfall.“Especially in the middle of a pandemic, when students need consistency, this shift really had an impact on the community,” Camacho said.Camacho wrote an email to Dr. Aguirre in early July about Peralta’s demotion. He did not address the situation, writing instead that he had “every confidence that Mr. Alcala will serve the Chula Vista High School community in the same open and welcoming manner he did at Chula Vista Middle.”Camacho said her criticism of the district’s decision has nothing to do with the new principal, but emphasized Ms. Peralta should have never been removed in the first place.“If you ask anyone, she was a star. She was probably one of the best things to happen at Chula Vista High School,” added Aaron Barrera, another former student.Barrera and Camacho are the driving forces behind the petition online, demanding Peralta get her job back. As of Tuesday afternoon, it had more than 7,800 signatures.“It's quite the injustice, it's quite unfair, and it's plain out wrong,” said Barrera.Peralta has not spoken publicly about her demotion.On Monday August 10th, an in-car protest will take place at the district office with her supporters, including educators, families, and leaders of the local Filipino community. (KGTV) -- A South Bay family spoke about the frightening moments that took place when a police chase ended in front their home and then turned into a shootout on their driveway Monday afternoon.Mark Yturralde said his son-in-law had the quick thinking and presence of mind to shut the door to prevent a suspect, later identified as David Angulo, from getting into their home on Rutgers Avenue.“I didn’t have time to be kind or nice. I had to shove my wife and granddaughter into a closet, and I told them to stay low, keep quiet, don’t come out until I tell you. I tried to watch from a corner,” said Yturralde.RELATED: Carjacking, pursuit leads to deadly officer-involved shooting in Chula VistaAccording to Chula Vista police, Angulo was a known gang member wanted in connection with at least three shootings in June. Police said Angulo carjacked a pickup truck in an area near Main Street, refused to pull over for officers, and led a pursuit into east Chula Vista.Police said Angulo lost control of the truck and crashed into a car driven by an active-duty military member. While the other driver was seriously injured, Angulo got out of the truck and ran to a family’s driveway.Angulo, according to police, opened fire at officers -- the exchange of gunfire that Yturralde said went on for several minutes. Shots struck and flattened the tires of vehicles parked in the driveway, but none of the bullets penetrated the house.Yturralde and Chula Vista police credited Yturralde’s son-in-law for keeping the incident from turning into a hostage situation, or worse.Angulo was killed during the shootout, and police said an investigation will determine how many shots were fired and who opened fire first. Police will also review officers’ body camera footage.Police promised the investigation findings will be released in a timely manner.The three officers involved in the incident were not injured.Family members said they found five shell casings in their backyard. They told ABC 10News they are grateful to police but also offered their condolences to Angulo’s family, even though he put their family in danger. 2145

(AP) — Another person killed in the deadliest wildfire in California history has been identified.The Butte County Sheriff's office said Friday it positively identified the remains of 68-year-old Judith Sipher of Paradise.That brings the total number of named dead to 81. Three people whose remains were recovered after the wildfire are tentatively identified but have not yet been named by the sheriff's office. Two of the 86 victims remain unknown.The fire in November last year destroyed nearly 15,000 homes in Paradise and surrounding towns. In the aftermath of the catastrophe, authorities used DNA testing to identify bone fragments and other remains of the victims. CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A man was arrested on suspicion of assault with a firearm after he allegedly pointed a rifle at a family that was setting off fireworks, authorities said today.Samuel Austin Laurabee, 28, was arrested Saturday night in the 500 block of Woodlawn Avenue, according to Lt. Scott Adkins of the Chula Vista Police Department.Laurabee allegedly pointed a bolt-action rifle at members of a nearby family who were setting off Fourth of July fireworks, Adkins said.Laurabee was booked into the San Diego Central Jail, with bail set at ,000, on one felony charge of assault with a firearm, according to jail records.
