BEIJING, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- On the eve of Spring Festival, people across China marked the last moments of the Year of the Rabbit with cheerful celebrations, while exchanging their wishes for a better and prosperous Year of the Dragon.Spring Festival, or Chinese New Year, falls on Monday but the week-long holiday started Sunday, with families, urban and rural as well as rich and poor, dining together and watching the year out in cheer. In a new community in Zhengzhou, capital of central China's Henan province, villagers relocated there for the nation's South-North Water Diversion project have their festival feasts paid for by the government."I've been buzzing around from office to office to get the festival allowances. Today is the third time money has been doled out before Spring Festival," said Lu Songtao, director of the resident committee of Jinyuan. The 60 households in Jinyuan are among the 330,000 people China has resettled for the central route of the massive water project, which aims to transport water from the Yangtze River to the country's drought-prone northern regions, including Beijing. Two month after bedding down in new homes with the help of government subsidies, villagers now wish their careers can also take off in the Year of the Dragon."There are many factories nearby, and I will start looking for a job right after the New Year, either in a battery plant or a food processing factory," said villager Liu Guizhi. In Wuhan, capital of Hubei province, sanitation workers who chose to stay on duty rather than be with their families during the festival ended up dining with the mayor."I'd like to thank you for a year's hard work that has kept the city beautiful," said Tang Liangzhi, mayor of Wuhan, at a banquet held on Saturday for 100 representatives of street cleaners.Though Spring Festival is an important family occasion for most Chinese, many cleaners could not leave their jobs as the week-long fireworks frenzy usually litters city streets with tonnes of cardboard and scraps of paper."I had been so busy today that I came to the banquet right from the street, with the my uniform on," said 51-year-old Yang Houjian."But I am deeply moved -- I feel my work is honored by the whole society," he said. This year's Spring Festival also brings a festive atmosphere to Xinjiang and Tibet, though celebrating the festival is not a tradition for many ethnic groups there. Young people, in particular, are mesmerized by the festival's "exotic" flavor."My friends from the Han community told me that it's their tradition to wear something red when their animal signs coincide with that of the year. So I bought a red bracelet as I'm a 'Dragon,'" said 23-year-old Hanati Kizihan, who is a Kazakh in Urumqi. Many households and institutions in Tibet have also put up national flags and portraits of Chinese leaders in honor of the national festival. On Sunday, a gigantic picture of China's central leaderships, represented by Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao, was unveiled at the regional government building in Lhasa to celebrate the festival.

BEIJING, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin's official goodwill visit to Greece, the Netherlands and Germany has deepened the friendship, promoted cooperation and enhanced understanding between China and the three nations, a Chinese official says. The visit was important in further deepening the friendship and mutual trust, promoting pragmatic cooperation and pushing forward the healthy development of relations between China and Europe, said Wang Shenghong, vice secretary general of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).Jia, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, had in-depth exchanges of views and reached broad consensus with government and parliament leaders of the three countries on issues related to bilateral ties and international and regional issues of common interest, said Wang, who accompanied Jia on the tour from Oct. 23 to Nov. 4.Jia Qinglin (R), chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, meets with Greek President Karolos Papoulias in Athens, Greece, on Oct. 24, 2011.During his visits, Jia also witnessed the signing of 15 inter-governmental agreements and commercial contracts, had extensive contact with people from different walks of life and visited some big-name companies.STRENGTHEN POLITICAL MUTUAL TRUST AND BUILD UP BILATERAL TIESDuring meetings and talks with leaders of the three countries, Jia expressed China's readiness to maintain the high-level exchanges of visits, build up political mutual trust, advance pragmatic cooperation, promote people-to-people and cultural exchanges and strengthen coordination in international affairs, Wang said.Jia said China is ready to work with the three nations to further advance bilateral ties and China-European Union (EU) relations.Greece's government and parliament leaders thanked China for its precious support at a time when Greece is being badly hurt by the financial crisis. Dutch leaders expressed their willingness to strengthen dialogue and cooperation with China in their joint response to the Europe debt crisis and other challenges. And German leaders praised China's positive role in overcoming the effects of the international financial crisis and stabilizing the world economy, Wang said.

BEIJING, Oct. 18 (Xinhuanet) -- Autism can likely develop when low birth weight babies are combined with other factors such as environment and genetic predisposition, new research suggests.Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and School of Medicine identified 1,105 children who weighed less than 2,000 grams at birth between Oct. 1, 1984, and July 3, 1989.Sixteen years later, researchers were able to reach 623 of those children, and used a questionnaire to screen them for autism spectrum disorders. When 189 of the children turned 21 years old, 60 percent of those who screened positive for an autism spectrum disorder, and 24 percent of those who screened negative with the condition. All in all, the rate of autism spectrum disorders among the study participants with low birth weights was five times higher than the general.Autism spectrum disorder makes people have difficulty communicating, difficulty interacting in social situations, and restrictive or repetitive interests, said study co-author Jennifer Pinto-Martin, a researcher in the University. Those with mild autism spectrum disorders, "may only want to talk about one subject," Pinto-Martin said. "They're perfectly functional. They can go to college. They can hold a job." Premature babies are often born with low birth weights, though full-term babies can also have the condition. The research suggests a need not only for better prenatal care to reduce the number of premature babies, but also a need for early diagnosis and intervention for people with autism.

JIUQUAN/BEIJING, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- Commander-in-chief of China's manned space program Chang Wanquan announced early Tuesday that the launch of Shenzhou-8 unmanned spacecraft was successful. The spacecraft was sent into the designated orbit after the blastoff at 5:58 a.m. from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest Gobi desert, carried by an upgraded Long March-2F rocket. It is heading for rendezvous with Tiangong-1, or "the Heavenly Palace" that was put into space on Sept. 29 for the country's first space docking. The move, if successful, will pave the way for China to operate a permanent space station around 2020 and make the nation the world's third to do so.The combined photo taken on Nov. 1, 2011 shows the blast-off of a modified model of the Long March CZ-2F rocket carrying the unmanned spacecraft Shenzhou-8 at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China's Gansu Province. Commander-in-chief of China's manned space program Chang Wanquan announced that the launch of the spacecraft was successful.Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang viewed the launch at the Jiuquan center. The launch was also observed on site by senior officials from the European Space Agency and the German Aerospace Center. The docking is scheduled to occur within two days after the launch of Shenzhou-8 and at a height of 343 km above the Earth's surface. It will return to the Earth after two docking tryouts.Chinese and German scientists will conduct 17 life science space experiments on the Chinese spacecraft Shenzhou-8, Wu Ping, spokeswoman for China's manned space program, said Monday. To ensure the success of the mission, Chinese space engineers have made "considerable modifications" on Shenzhou-8 to previous versions of the spacecraft.Shenzhou-8, with a length of nine meters and a maximum diameter of 2.8 meters, has a liftoff weight of 8.082 tonnes."More than half of the 600 or so sets of equipment have been modified, while newly designed devices account for about 15 percent of the total," Wu said. The modifications were mainly aimed at arming the spacecraft with automatic and manual rendezvous and docking capacities, and enhancing the vehicle's performance, safety and reliability, Wu said."After the improvements, the spacecraft will be able to connect with the target spacecraft Tiangong-1 for 180 days," Wu said. The unmanned spacecraft is also equipped with devices for recording real images and mechanical parameters during its flight, to test the space docking before a manned attempt.Once China has mastered the technologies of rendezvous and docking, it will be equipped with the basic technologies and capacity required for building a space station, said Zhou Jianping, chief designer of China's manned space program.Tuesday's mission will be followed by launches of spaceships Shenzhou-9 and -10 in 2012, which are also expected to dock with Tiangong-1. "At least one mission of the two will be manned," Wu said. The crew members, including probably two female astronauts, have already been selected for the possible manual space docking mission in 2012 and are being trained for manual docking skills. The space docking tests and experiments will provide crucial experience of China's construction of a 60-tonne permanent manned space station around 2020 when Chinese astronauts are expected to operate more research projects in space."It will make it possible for China to carry out space exploration of a larger scale," Zhou said.
