SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A Utah man who robbed a Carlsbad Motel 6 at gunpoint, then was arrested attempting to re-enter the United States, was convicted of federal robbery and firearm-related charges, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced Wednesday.Lance Lamont Lavert of Salt Lake City, 37, was convicted Tuesday by a San Diego federal court jury for the July 9, 2018, morning robbery of the motel on Paseo Del Norte.Prosecutors said Lavert and his girlfriend asked for a room, but were denied due to a lack of ID.Lavert then pointed a gun at the motel clerk and her manager, demanding money. When the clerk and manager ran, Lavert leapt over the counter, kicked in the door of the bathroom where the clerk was hiding, dragged her back to the cash register by her hair and pistol-whipped her in the head, court documents state.Along with 5 in cash, Lavert and his girlfriend made off with the clerk's car keys and stole the clerk's car, prosecutors said.Lavert was arrested two days later trying to cross the border back into the United States. The revolver he used in the robbery was found in his waistband.In addition to committing the robbery, Lavert was convicted for possession of a gun while having several prior felony convictions, including for arson in Utah and assault with a deadly weapon out of Imperial County, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.Lavert's girlfriend pleaded guilty prior to the trial, according to prosecutors. 1440

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An Italian restaurant in Encinitas agreed to pay ,800 to settle a pregnancy discrimination lawsuit filed by a former employee who alleged her hours were substantially cut, and she was ultimately fired, after she told her employer she was expecting, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced Tuesday.After informing the owner in 2015 that she was expecting, the server was told that she "should stay home since she was pregnant, that her pregnancy had caused coverage problems, and that (the owner) would offer a position with less pay for more work so that she would not come back from her pregnancy leave," according to the complaint filed against Maurizio Trattoria Italiana LLC.She was fired in the summer of 2015, while less experienced servers were hired, according to the complaint.RELATED: Lawsuit aims to stop California's AB 5 from taking effect"Women should not be penalized for having children," said Christopher Green, director of the EEOC's San Diego office. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A wrongful death lawsuit was filed Monday on behalf of the family of a 24-year-old woman who died last fall at the Las Colinas Detention Facility in Santee.Elisa Serna died Nov. 11, 2019, a few days after she was booked into the county jail.Earlier this year, the sheriff's department said Serna died from complications of drug abuse, with a contributing factor of early intrauterine pregnancy.The lawsuit filed in San Diego federal court alleges jail staff were aware of Serna's substance abuse and subsequent withdrawal symptoms, but did not provide her with treatment. Though Serna was fainting, had low blood pressure, was vomiting regularly and displaying odd and incoherent behavior, jail staff "ignored the obvious signs of medical distress" and "failed to provide proper medication as Elisa's condition was worsening," the complaint alleges.Sheriff's officials could not immediately be reached for comment on the suit, which names San Diego County and Sheriff Bill Gore as defendants.Plaintiffs in the suit include Serna's parents, Michael and Paloma Serna; her husband, Brandon Honeycutt, and a minor child referred to as S.H.The sheriff's department has come under fire recently over a spate of deaths among county jail inmates, which were referenced within the complaint.The lawsuit cited news reports indicating the county had the highest jail mortality rate among the state's largest counties, and said prior deaths from inmates suffering from withdrawal symptoms should have made jail staff aware of the potentially fatal consequences of those symptoms.The suit also alleges staff are inadequately trained and in-custody deaths at county jails are not being properly investigated."Even though inmates are dying or suffering catastrophic injuries at an alarming rate at San Diego County jails, the medical and correctional staff whose actions or inactions cause the deaths are not investigated; not informed of their failures; not given further training or remedial instruction; and are not monitored or closely supervised after these adverse events," the lawsuit alleges. 2111

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A long-planned but controversial religious tourism and conference center project in Mission Valley received final approval today from the San Diego City Council.Construction of the 1 million Legacy International Project will be funded by televangelist Morris Cerullo.Slated for the 18-acre site of the former Mission Valley Resort, the project encompasses five buildings, including a new 127-room hotel and restaurant. It will also have a replica of Jerusalem's Wailing Wall and a domed theater featuring biblical films.At a hearing two weeks ago, opponents expressed concerns over the potential for increased traffic in an already congested area.Cerullo's organization plans to add one lane in each direction on Hotel Circle South. Under a permit condition, they plan to maintain a count of vehicles that enter the facility's driveway over the first three years.On its second reading, the item was passed without comment on a 7-2 vote, with Georgette Gomez and Chris Ward dissenting.The council also approved an amendment to council policy that will move up the timeline for receiving ballot submissions from the public.The change does not affect citizens initiatives or referendums that go through the signature collection process.According to City Clerk Elizabeth Maland, the amendment will provide a little more clarity to the public about the process. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - California Sens. Kamala Harris and Dianne Feinstein introduced a Senate resolution Wednesday to condemn the deadly April 27 shooting at the Chabad of Poway synagogue. The resolution condemns anti-Semitism, white supremacy, white nationalism and other forms of hatred as antithetical to ``American values of dignity and respect for all people.'' It also expresses hope that the three injured survivors of the attack make a full and swift recovery and includes a call to honor the memory of Lori Gilbert Kaye, 60, who died at the scene of the shooting that occurred during a celebration of the end of the eight-day Jewish holiday of Passover. ``The rising threat of white nationalism and white supremacy is in direct contradiction with the highest ideals of our country, and I urge my colleagues to join me in supporting this resolution to condemn this despicable hate,'' Harris said. ``Hate has no place in our country,'' Feinstein said. ``Our resolution condemns the anti-Semitic attack on Congregation Chabad and reaffirms our nation's values of openness and tolerance so all Americans can worship freely without fear of violence.'' A similar Senate resolution condemning anti-Semitism was introduced last week by Sens. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Tim Kaine, D-Virginia.
