Top officials at the Justice Department, the FBI and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence agreed Monday to share highly classified information with lawmakers related to the Russia investigation amid an escalating controversy over the bureau's use of a confidential intelligence source during the 2016 presidential campaign.White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Monday that chief of staff John Kelly planned to "immediately" schedule a meeting with the officials and leaders of Congress to "review highly classified and other information they have requested."But the statement -- vague enough to allow each side to claim victory -- did not fully settle the critical issue: whether the Justice Department would ultimately be forced to turn over the documents subpoenaed by House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes on the FBI source.Sanders had said earlier that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, FBI Director Christopher Wray and Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats were expected to gather at the White House on Monday afternoon for a discussion aimed at addressing congressional requests.Rosenstein, Wray and several other officials were spotted leaving the White House just before 4 p.m. ET after over an hour inside. The Justice Department did not comment on the meeting or details of the agreement. While Sanders and a source familiar with the meeting said it had been scheduled before a weekend of tweets from President Donald Trump, it took on a heightened public focus Monday afternoon. On Sunday, Trump demanded via tweet the Justice Department "look into whether or not the FBI/DOJ infiltrated or surveilled the Trump Campaign for political Purposes."His tweets prompted the Justice Department to ask its inspector general to expand its ongoing probe into the surveillance of former Trump campaign aide Carter Page to include a review of whether the FBI was politically motivated in its investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 US election, Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores said in a statement Sunday."If anyone did infiltrate or surveil participants in a presidential campaign for inappropriate purposes, we need to know about it and take appropriate action," Rosenstein said in the statement. Some former Justice Department and FBI officials praised the move as deftly avoiding a ugly showdown, while others lamented that Rosenstein had failed to stand up to the President. But tapping Inspector General Michael Horowitz to examine the issue appeared to de-escalate the controversy, at least for now.Vice President Mike Pence praised the decision during an interview with Fox News set to air later Monday."The President I think is grateful that the Department of Justice is going to have the inspector general look into it, and determine, and insure, that there was no surveillance done for political purposes against our campaign," Pence said. How House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes and other Republicans on Capitol Hill handle the apparent agreement for another classified briefing remains to be seen.Nunes said Sunday that he would refuse to meet with the Justice Department unless he was able to review documents related to the confidential FBI source.Rep. Adam Schiff, of California, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said he's unaware of what the administration briefing on the confidential source is about, whether they'll see documents and whether he'll be invited. He's concerned that the Justice Department may have "capitulated" despite its concerns that revealing the information could put lives at risk.Schiff also expressed concern about Kelly or other White House officials at the upcoming meeting getting access to sensitive materials related to the ongoing investigation. The New York Times and The Washington Post?have reported the source spoke to Page and Trump campaign co-chairman Sam Clovis, as well as campaign adviser George Papadopoulos.Clovis' attorney, Victoria Toensing, told CNN on Monday that the source had reached out to Clovis but her client "didn't know this guy from Adam.""Russia didn't even come up," Toensing added, saying the meeting was about China and took place around the end of August or early September 2016.Page tweeted what he indicated was an email from the source in July 2017, describing their interactions as "cordial," but CNN has not independently confirmed the email's authenticity.Trump has previously suggested the intelligence source was "embedded" in his presidential campaign, but US officials have denied that claim to CNN. 4642

TOPEKA, Kan. – Republican Rep. Roger Marshall has won an open Senate seat in Kansas in a tougher-than-expected race that saw his Democratic opponent far outraise him.Marshall is an obstetrician who has represented western and central Kansas in Congress for two terms. He prevailed against Democratic state Sen. Barbara Bollier.Marshall entered the campaign with the GOP’s traditional advantages in a state that tends to vote for conservatives. Republicans haven’t lost a Senate race in Kansas since 1932. But Bollier, a former Republican, excited Democrats and raised more than million to set a Kansas record that Marshall couldn’t match.Bollier pitched herself as an independent and common-sense centrist, but Marshall portrayed her as too liberal for Kansas.Marshall will succeed retiring four-term Republican Sen. Pat Roberts. 841

Time is running out with just five days to go before funding expires for several key federal agencies and no deal in sight to avert a partial government shutdown. On Capitol Hill, Republicans and Democrats alike have made clear they don't want a shutdown, but lawmakers left Washington last week without a resolution in an ongoing standoff over funding for President Donald Trump's long-promised border wall. The administration and congressional Democrats appeared to be no closer to reaching an agreement over the weekend.White House senior adviser Stephen Miller said on Sunday the administration would do "whatever is necessary to build the border wall," saying "if it comes to it, absolutely," when asked on CBS's "Face the Nation" if that would mean a partial shutdown. But Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer insisted on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday that the President is "not going to get the wall in any form," saying the votes aren't there in the House or the Senate. The window is narrow this week for Congress to take action. The Senate will be back on Monday, but the House of Representatives isn't expected to return until Wednesday evening. That leaves little time before funding runs out at midnight on Friday for a number of federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, the Justice Department, and other parts of the government.Trump wants billion in wall funding, but that number is a non-starter for Democrats. Any spending legislation would need to pass with at least some Democratic votes since it would have to clear a 60-vote threshold in the Senate where Republicans only have a 51-seat majority. Some congressional Republicans were talking openly at the end of last week about the possibility that lawmakers could punt the border fight by passing a temporary, stopgap spending measure. If Congress and the White House agree to a short-term funding patch that could leave the issue for the new, incoming Congress to resolve in January.Outgoing Republican Rep. Jeff Denham of California told CNN's Kate Bolduan on Friday, "At this late in the game, I think a short-term resolution is in order, something that would allow the next Congress to actually come in and negotiate a much larger, longer agreement.""The question is ... will we kick the can until the day after Christmas, January 2nd or 3rd, or whatever?," Republican Sen. Richard Shelby, the chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, told CNN on Thursday. "I don't know. There has to be some sort of breakthrough."So far, however, there has been no apparent breakthrough, and the threat of a partial shutdown moves closer to becoming a reality with each passing day.The President defiantly said during a dramatic meeting last week with House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and Schumer that he would take responsibility for a partial shutdown if one takes place."I'll tell you what, I am proud to shut down the government for border security, Chuck," Trump told the top Senate Democrat. "So, I will take the mantle. I will be the one to shut it down. I'm not going to blame you for it."If a shutdown takes place, it would be limited in scope. Congress has already funded roughly 75% of the federal government through September 2019, including the Pentagon as well as the Departments of Health and Human Services and Labor. But that doesn't mean a partial shutdown that would start just days before Christmas wouldn't be disruptive. In the event of a shutdown, some federal employees would be deemed essential and would continue to work, but their pay would be withheld until the shutdown is over.Other federal employees would be placed on furlough, meaning they would effectively be put on a leave of absence without pay. Congress could move to order that furloughed employees be paid retroactively after the shutdown is over, but that is not guaranteed. 3870

This holiday season, you may be stocking up on canned drinks for parties and guests. Well, you'll want to clean off those cans before handing them out!Investigator reporter Jace Larson tested soda cans for bacteria, and what he found was pretty gross. The cans tested came from a variety of places, including grocery stores, convenience stores, vending machines and cans stored in a home. All but one of the cans tested had mold on it.The highest mold count was 600 colonies of mold. That can came from a grocery store. This type of exposure could make people with compromised immune systems or lung disease sick.To put that number of colonies into perspective-- a flooded home could have 2,000-plus colonies of mold, while a condemned home could have roughly levels around 36,000.However, microbiologist Helene Ver Eecke, with the Metropolitan State University of Denver, says the 600 colonies of mold isn’t really a cause for concern.“Regular microbial load that we are constantly dosing ourselves with everything that we touch with everything we breathe,” Ver Eecke says. “It's just part of being human.”One soda can did test for bacteria levels that would be slightly concerning. The can—purchased from a convenience store--had the highest levels, with 3,700 bacteria colonies on it.But compared to dry cereal mixes, which can have up to 100,000 bacteria colonies and deemed safe to consume by FDA standards, the colonies found on that can were significantly less."There was one sample that came from a convenience store that had a higher bacterial count than samples, which makes sense because they were probably stocked probably appropriate for people to wear gloves when stocking," explains Ver Eecke. If you’re worried about the amount of bacteria, Ver Eecke recommends seeking other options."There may be other options for you a bottle or other things to try to help keep you safe." 1901
