FALLBROOK (CNS) - Authorities Saturday were continuing to seek a driver who was involved in a crash with another car in Fallbrook early Friday then fled, was pursued by the other car's driver and escaped when the other driver was involved in a second crash.Officers said the driver of the Mustang was in critical condition at a hospital as a result of the crash.The dangerous chain of events began shortly before 9:40 a.m. when a brown SUV, possibly a GMC Envoy, and a Ford Mustang collided on southbound South Mission Road at Stage Coach Lane, just west of Fallbrook High School, according to information from CHP Officer Mark Latulippe.The "involved vehicles began to chase each other," Latulippe said, and the two cars initially headed south, but later turned around and continued north on South Mission Road.As the cars approached the intersection with Stage Coach Lane -- the same area where the first collision occurred -- a Honda CRV was also nearing the signal, heading west on Stage Coach.The SUV made it through the intersection, but the Mustang was struck by the CRV, which was heading into the intersection with a green light, Latulippe said.Another two cars, a Toyota Tundra and a Volvo V60, were also struck by the Mustang after the impact with the CRV.The driver of the Mustang, a 19-year-old Fallbrook man, suffered "major injuries" and was taken to Palomar Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition Friday night, Latulippe said.A female passenger in the Mustang, also 19, was being treated at Sharp Memorial Hospital for injuries described as minor.Drivers and passengers in the other cars involved in the second crash had complaints of pain, but no other injuries, according to Latulippe.It is believed the car involved in the initial crash is possibly an early 2000s GMC Envoy driven my a man. Its driver continued north on South Mission Road after the collision, and was last seen near Rocky Crest Road.The intersection of South Mission Road and Stage Coach Lane was closed for about an hour-and-a-half on Friday while officers investigated. 2085

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- San Diego County’s largest ice-skating facility is closing for good.Officials with Ice-Plex Escondido announced Thursday that the facility, located on 555 N. Tulip St., is shutting down effective immediately.Since 1995, Ice-Plex was a destination for San Diegans looking for a place to ice skate or play hockey. The facility, with its two Olympic-sized ice rinks, offered classes and public ice skating sessions that ran 7 days a week.In a statement on their website, Ice-Plex officials said, “This was not an easy decision. Our hockey and skating communities have been strong partners to us throughout the years, and we have worked hard over the last few months to find an alternative way to keep the facility open. Unfortunately, that solution has not emerged.”Officials said the facility has been operating “at a substantial loss” in the past few years, and they’ve struggled to maintain the equipment and other systems needed to keep the facility running.The pandemic-related closure also affected the facility’s ability to stay afloat, and despite numerous efforts, officials could not find ways to keep the Ice-Plex open.“We close our doors with a heavy heart and would like to extend our deepest thanks to our athletes, customers, staff and volunteers, who have been responsible for creating a welcome and competitive environment at Ice-Plex. (KGTV) - The Encinitas City Council hopes that a compromise on a controversial bike safety plan will be able to satisfy casual cyclists who feel Coast Highway is not safe, as well as sport cyclists who like being able to zip along current the bike lanes.The route through the Cardiff community between Encinitas and Solana Beach is believed to be the most frequently ridden corridor for bicyclists in San Diego County.The debate began when the city began looking at replacing the current bike lanes with "protected" bike lanes. These will use curbs and bollard posts to separate the lanes from vehicle traffic.City Councilmember Kellie Shay Hinze believes this plan will make the area safer for commuters, beach-goers, and families who would prefer a safe option to ride bikes over driving. Furthermore, she believes there will be environmental benefits, as well."If residents are able to access this beach on foot or by bike, then we free up parking spaces for people that might be coming from farther away and we reduce the congestion that we generate as a city on our roads," Hinze said.However, avid sport cyclists believe protected bike lanes are more dangerous."That is a trap to a cyclist going fast," said cyclist Karl Rudnick. "I would never ride in that."Rudnick explained that funneling all cyclists into lanes divided from the road by curbs and railings gives cyclists who are riding at high speeds nowhere to go when attempting to pass by slower riders. He was surprised to hear that there were safety concerns along that portion of Coast Highway."It was a real eye opener to realize that there's a lot of people who don't ride their bikes who find that stretch very dangerous- the very stretch that I consider the safest, most beautiful stretch in the county," said Rudnick.Rudnick and Hinze both support the compromise plan. While the city will move forward with the protected lanes, it will also paint "sharrows" in the #2 lane of the highway. These indicate to drivers that cyclists have equal right of way to use that lane of traffic. There will also be signage to let drivers know cyclists have legal access to the highway. (KGTV) — A fundraising t-shirt made for an Escondido Police officer fighting brain cancer was banned from Palomar Hospital after someone deemed it racist.Escondido Police Officer Brett Byler, 31, seemed to have it all: a beautiful family and his dream job. But in February, his life turned upside down."He went for a bike ride, and he collapsed," Officer Byler's father, Jim Byler said. "He went to the emergency room, and four days later, he was having brain surgery."The young father of three was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. Byler said the news was devastating, but the community immediately showed their support. Within days, a friend and employee at Palomar Hospital, where Officer Byler was doing rehab, asked if they could make a fundraiser t-shirt for Byler."I thought it was awesome. It was just an act of kindness and generosity, and it kind of overwhelmed us," Byler said, tearing up.The friend designed an original logo with the family's silhouette in front of an American flag with red white and blue stripes, each color representing fire, medical personnel, and police.Byler said it was a big hit. Along with the Gofundme, it raised a lot of money, and hospital staff wore the T-shirt for months."Everything was good, and then we found out that the shirt was being characterized as something that it was clearly never intended to be," Byler said.According to Palomar Hospital, a patient and staff member recently reported that the shirt was racist and that they were offended by it. The blue line in a similarly designed shirt has caused national controversy in recent months, where some have interpreted it as "Anti-Black Lives Matter." So the hospital asked staff wearing the shirt on-duty, to take it off immediately.
