SAN DIEGO COUNTY (KGTV) -- With sudden layoffs and overcrowded grocery stores, the coronavirus is making it even more difficult for families to feed themselves. But many are stepping up to distribute food for free.Three hundred sixty-five cars lined up with their trunks popped wide open, ready for bags of free food to be plopped in. Following their new drive-up food bank protocols, volunteers at the Community Through Hope (CTH) warehouse in Chula Vista made no direct contact with the families in line. "We were able to provide so much nutrition in his very safe environment and get it out quickly," Rosey Vasquez, Executive Director of CTH, said. It was the same story at the Brother Benno Foundation in Oceanside. Their Feeding San Diego distribution was supposed to last all day. But their warehouse cleared up after 150 cars rolled in, in just two hours. Meanwhile, in the Gaslamp District in Downtown San Diego, the kitchen staff at Metl Bar and Restaurant are hard at work. They are not getting nearly as many orders with just take-home and deliveries. But the owners, Jenna and Randy Elskamp, did not want to lay off their staff. Their idea was to have them continue to make hot meals for newly unemployed restaurant workers. "And so giving back to our industry was where we want to help."They have a couple of sponsors now. But the Elskamps have no idea if they could survive this in the long run. But as veterans in the restaurant industry, they said they know the hardships. That is why they set up a section of their website to offer free meals for anyone in the industry struggling to feed themselves."I feel like we are all on a sinking ship right now," Jenna said. "Instead of being the rats who are trying to climb up to the very top of the ship to save themselves, we want to be there at the bottom, trying to help everyone survive. Because we either make it out of this together or we don't. It's a saying at the heart of a new experiment called itsblackandwhite.us.Ryan Berman, along with Ahab Nimry and several other marketing and advertising agency representatives say they wanted to figure out how to start a constructive conversation about things like race, implicit bias and equity."For one, getting perspective and understanding a bias you might have because you can't do anything about it if you can't spot it," said Berman.So they came up with a 10 question, online survey that asks things like, "Do you believe hard work puts you on your path for a promotion?Do you have a close friend that is black?""We're not trying to nudge you one way or the other, we're just trying to say hey pick a side lets start talking and work this out," explained Nimry.At the end, you get to see how other people responded and access links to learn more, donate to civil rights organizations, even register to vote.The creators say the idea is to share what they learn and then take all that data and develop a sort of "seal of approval" for consumers to know how different companies stack up."Launching almost a diversity/inclusion certification for organizations," said Berman. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -Saturday was the second night five parks were under a new curfew across San Diego. Neighbors were mixed on whether it will affect crime.Police and neighbors celebrated the new curfew Friday at City Heights Square Mini Park. Police said since January 2019 there's been 217 crimes reported within 1,500 feet of the park, ranging from assault to theft.READ RELATED: Neighbors celebrate nightly curfew at San Diego parksRonald Tieken said he spearheaded the initiative, putting together a survey that he said 50 seniors in the building bordering the park responded to. He said the curfew is the first step in turning the tide in the neighborhood.Other neighbors disagree."It's probably going to up the rate of crime in this neighborhood," Ephraim Denmon III said they just need more people who will stand up to crime to fill the park. He said that or hire a security guard."If grown folks are in a grown folks park then they should let grown folks be grown folks," he said arguing the curfew takes away from the neighbors surrounding the park."You have your low income and your seniors, the seniors spend most of their time out here after midnight... SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A San Diego couple woke up to find guns pointed in their face inside their own home. The home invasion happened on the 3200 block of Bramson Place just before 7 a.m. on Monday. Officers say the couple was sleeping when they found the suspects inside their home. The suspects were masked and one of them also had a knife. Police say the burglars put the knife to the man's throat, cutting him several times. Neighbors were too afraid to talk on camera but told 10News said they heard all of the commotion. One witness said they saw the two men running towards a nearby parking lot and getting into a red car. Police don't have a suspect description since the suspects were wearing masks. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Firefighters in California are racing to slow the spread of wildfires that burned nearly one million acres in a week and destroyed hundreds of homes. The fires have killed five people, torched nearly 700 homes and other structures and forced tens of thousands from their houses. Light winds, cooler nighttime weather helped fire crews make a bit of progress on Saturday. But their efforts could be hurt by warm, dry weather, erratic wind gusts and lightning in the forecast.
