SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Realtors say all the signs point to a busy spring and summer in San Diego."It's heating up a little bit," says Markus Feldmann, with the Pacific Real Estate Center. "We see a very active market again."Home prices have come down from their record peak in August of 2018. That month, CoreLogic reported that San Diego's median home price was 3,000. In December, it had dropped to 0,000 (see chart above). According to their numbers, homes in San Diego sold for ,000 more in that period than other times of the year. Zillow also says homes are on the market for six fewer days in early May.No matter which side of the sale you're on, Feldmann says there are simple ways you can make sure you get the most for your money.If you're a buyer, he says you don't have to keep increasing your offer. Feldmann says you can increase your deposit. You can also decrease the length of inspection time from the traditional 17 days to 10.RELATED: How housing got so expensiveMost importantly, though, he says if you have a home you like, write a letter to the seller explaining what you like about the house and why you want to buy it."It personalizes the transaction," says Feldmann. "This way a seller is going to see who is the buyer and they may have a preference. They may prefer a family or a couple over an investor. He also says there are some simple ways to spruce up the house that will make it more attractive without costing too much money."Be aware of clutter and maybe move some furniture out of the house to make the rooms look bigger," he suggests. "Put a little investment into the front yard. Put some color in, put some flowers in, maybe use some bark to delineate the flower beds. Just improve on the general appeal of the house. Those small things can have a big payout."Feldmann says it's also crucial that sellers stay patient after they list a home."Let the property sit on the MLS for a few days, don't just accept the first offer that comes," he says. "Let it breathe like a good glass of wine. SAN DIEGO, Calif. – When college students were forced out of dorms, some without family or a permanent home didn’t have anywhere to go.Young people who are too old for the foster care system have been some of the hardest hit by COVID-19. Researchers with the Field Center for Children’s Policy found they've been severely impacted by the unemployment, education disruption, homelessness, and food insecurity brought on by the pandemic.“Once I turned 21, because I emancipated from foster care, there weren’t any housing resources for me available. It was kind of, you’re on your own," said Jackie Robles. During the shutdown, Robles was transitioning into graduate school at UCLA.“There was a lot of confusion with dorms shutting down, sororities and fraternities pretty much dismantled. And then also on-campus jobs and part-time jobs, those were all being laid off or non-existent," said Gianna Mulkay.Mulkay is Executive Director of Together We Rise, a nonprofit dedicated to helping foster children. When COVID-19 hit, they moved quickly to support former foster youth in college, calling on volunteers to open their homes, working with hotels to secure rooms, and even purchasing RVs for students.“Before you know it, we were serving 1,200 students, with not just longer-term housing, but making sure they had meal assistance, making sure they stayed enrolled," said Mulkay. Through the rapid response effort, Robles received money for food and rent before landing in a housing program for the homeless.“We’re very nervous about the continued close-downs and what that means for housing for foster youth," said Mulkay. It’s a system that was already in crisis, Mulkay says, noting some of the dismal statistics.Among them: 80% of the prison population has experienced the foster care system, 70% of foster youth go homeless within 18 months of aging out of the system, and 70% of young women in the foster care system will become pregnant by age 21. Mulkay says there's also a huge disparity in education, only 50% of foster youth graduate high school, and just 3% graduate college.“Foster community is hit, and it’s hit hard. We don’t think it will ever be the same again," said Mulkay. But the rapid response effort is showing results; 100% of students who received help re-enrolled for college this fall. They now have funding to provide this critical lifeline to youth in 14 states.“This is definitely way more direct, way more in the trenches of discovering the real issues," said Mulkay. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — California voters are right to think they already weighed in on how big cages should be for egg-laying hens.In 2008, voters ushered in Proposition 2, which sought to free egg-laying hens from tiny cages. It didn't outlaw cages but barred California farmers from keeping hens — as well as calves raised for veal and breeding pigs — in pens so small they virtually couldn't move.Since then, supermarket shelves have filled with cage-free egg varieties. Corporations like McDonald's, Costco and Taco Bell have committed to using cage-free products.RELATED: Proposed California initiative seeks to end high-speed railBut a decade later, voters are being asked to revisit the issue with Proposition 12, the Farm Animal Confinement Initiative.The Humane Society of the United States, the issue's primary proponent, says the measure is needed to update California standards and to apply those standards to out-of-state farmers selling their products in California. The earlier initiative simply stated the three types of animals must be able to turn around freely, stand up and fully extend their limbs — but set no specifics.A "yes" vote for Proposition 12 would create new minimum size requirements for confinement pens for all three animals and require that all egg-laying hens be cage-free by 2022.It would also ban the sales from other states not meeting California's standards.RELATED: No vote coming in 2018, but measure to expand convention center qualifies for ballotThe Humane Society calls the measure a "commonsense reform" that strengthens a decade-old animal cruelty law and gives farmers a phase-in time to shift to more humane practices."Most of the eggs sold in California come from birds confined in cages where it's hard for them to even move. They have to eat, sleep, defecate and lay eggs in the same small space every day for their entire life," said Josh Balk, vice president at the Humane Society of the United States. "Proposition 12 ensures that the pork sold in California, the veal sold in California and the eggs sold in the state come from (animals) not confined in cages."Specifically, the measure would require, starting in 2020, a calf confined for production to have at least 43 square feet (4 square meters) of floor space to roam in, while each pig would have to be given 24 square feet (2.2 square meters) of floor space starting in 2022.RELATED: California gas tax repeal qualifies for November ballotEgg-laying hens, starting in 2020, must be given 1 square foot (0.1 square meter) of floor space each, and have to be cage-free by 2022, according to Proposition 12.According to findings of the state's nonpartisan Legislative Analyst's Office, the measure would likely result in an increase in prices for eggs, pork and veal partly because farmers would have to remodel or build new housing for animals."Changes in housing systems, which come with significant costs that increase food prices, should be driven by consumer purchasing decisions, not the agenda of any activist group," Jim Monroe, National Pork Producers Council spokesman, told the Los Angeles Times.RELATED: Private DMV office provides services to California lawmakersThe Association of California Egg Farmers also opposes the measure, saying the expedited timeline could lead to supply disruptions, price spikes and a shortage of eggs for sale.The Legislative Analyst's Office concluded that if approved, the measure could cost the state as much as million a year to enforce, and millions of dollars more per year in lost tax revenues from farm businesses that choose to stop or reduce production because of higher costs.Other opponents of Proposition 12 say it doesn't go far enough to stop animal cruelty.Bradley Miller, a spokesman for Californians against Cruelty, Cages and Fraud, which is leading a "No on Proposition 12" campaign, says the measure is misleading because the phase-in period implicitly makes cages legal until at least 2022."We're opposed to legalizing cages in our state," said Miller, who is also president of the Humane Farming Association. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police say a man was stabbed by his ex-girlfriend in a home on 3500 block of Adams Avenue just before 2:45 p.m. Sunday.A witness said she saw the man hobbling after the ex-girlfriend as she drove off. The witness followed the car long enough to get the license plate number.The man was bleeding from the right thigh.Police say neighbors jumped in to help the man, before he was transported to the hospital. Police say he is in stable condition.The ex-girlfriend returned to the scene and was arrested. Police say another man was arrested, who was involved with the ex-girlfriend.Adams Avenue westbound at 36th Street is shut down, and may reopen around 6 p.m., according to police. 728
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — In the latest call to re-name racially charged brands and logos, nearly 1,000 people have signed an online petition urging Trader Joe's to stop labeling its international food products with ethnic-sounding names.The petition says labeling Chinese, Mexican or Italian food under the labels “Trader Ming's,” “Trader Jose,” or “Trader Giotto's” is racist because it exoticizes other cultures.Petitioners argue the names perpetuate harmful stereotypes."The Trader Joe’s branding is racist because it exoticizes other cultures - it presents 'Joe' as the default 'normal' and the other characters falling outside of it - they are 'Arabian Joe,' 'Trader José,' and 'Trader Joe San.'"In response, the grocery store chain said it decided several years ago to use only the Trader Joe’s name on its products and has been in the process of updating the ethnic-sounding labels.The company said it will soon complete the work. 941
