LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A pair of active-duty U.S. Marines stationed at Camp Pendleton were arrested Tuesday morning on a federal grand jury indictment charging one of the Marines and three civilians with conspiring to distribute narcotics -- including oxycodone pills laced with fentanyl -- to civilians and members of the Marine Corps, one of whom suffered a fatal drug overdose in May.Lance Cpls. Anthony Ruben Whisenant, 20, and Ryan Douglas White, 22, were expected to make their initial appearances Tuesday afternoon in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles. Whisenant allegedly distributed narcotics to fellow Marines, including the one who overdosed, and White is charged with being an accessory after the fact for allegedly attempting to hinder the apprehension of Whisenant and an alleged drug supplier named in the indictment.The 14-count superseding indictment also charges:-- Jordan Nicholas McCormick, 26, of Palmdale, the lead defendant and the conspiracy's alleged supplier of LSD, ecstasy, cocaine and oxycodone pills laced with fentanyl to co-conspirators-- Gustavo Jaciel Solis, 24, of Sylmar, who allegedly distributed McCormick's drugs to civilians and military personnel-- Jessica Sarah Perez, 23, of Pacoima, who allegedly distributed narcotics, including fentanyl and cocaine, to civilian customersOn Aug. 11, Solis and Perez were indicted on fentanyl and cocaine distribution charges, and Solis was indicted on firearms-related charges. They have pleaded not guilty and their trial date is scheduled for Oct. 27. Solis is in federal custody and Perez is free on ,000 bond.Tuesday's updated indictment adds McCormick -- who is also in federal custody -- Whisenant and White as defendants, in addition to adding charges to the original indictment. According to the indictment, the conspiracy lasted from last November through this month and involved multiple sales of fentanyl- laced oxycodone to an undercover buyer, often for amounts exceeding ,000 per buy.On May 22, Solis sold 10 pills of oxycodone laced with fentanyl to an active-duty Marine who died of a drug overdose in the early morning hours of May 23, the indictment alleges.In addition to the conspiracy charge, McCormick, Solis, Whisenant and Perez face substantive charges of distribution of narcotics, including fentanyl. McCormick and Solis are also charged with possessing firearms in furtherance of drug crimes.If convicted, McCormick and Solis would face a sentence of 10 years to life in federal prison, and Whisenant and Perez would each face up to 20 years behind bars. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A large ``Trump'' sign erected overnight on a hillside near the San Diego (405) Freeway in the Sepulveda Pass was taken down by authorities today.The sign -- consisting of white capital letters similar to the `Hollywood'' sign -- was taken down by Caltrans workers by about 9 a.m.It was not known who put the sign in place. Neither the Los Angeles Police Department nor the California Highway Patrol had any information about the sign when reached by City News Service. Freeway traffic was not affected. Lauren Wonder, chief public information officer for Caltrans, told the Los Angeles Times that the sign was on private property.For that reason, Wonder said, Caltrans workers ``laid it down so it wasn't a visual distraction'' but did not completely remove the sign, which was noticed at about 7 a.m.``This was a life and safety issue because there were concerns about distracted driving,'' Wonder said. 933

LOS ANGELES (KGTV) - A vigil held Wednesday for a bicyclist killed at an intersection in South Los Angeles on Tuesday became the scene of another hit-and-run crash that injured a pedestrian."The driver of a tan-colored Honda Accord drove through the vigil at the intersection of Manchester and Normandie avenues shortly after 1 p.m.," Los Angeles police Officer Tony Im said.The video from the scene captured the sedan striking the pedestrian, who is then flung into the air, appearing to hit his head on the car windshield and finally landing on the asphalt.RELATED: GOOD SAMARITAN HIT WHILE HELPING MOTORISTAfter rolling to his feet, he hopped over to the sidewalk on one foot, seemingly injuring his right leg. He then collapsed onto the sidewalk where onlookers came to his aid.As the suspected hit-and-run motorist drove off, a group from the dozens of bicyclists taking part in the vigil attempted to follow the vehicle, including people running after the driver.During the vigil, "some rocks and bottles were thrown toward responding officers and a patrol vehicle, but no officers were injured and no arrests were made," Im said.Police were able to eventually clear the intersection. A department SUV can be seen having its rear window smashed.According to the LAPD's South Traffic Division, the bicyclist killed Tuesday was a man in his early 20s, who was struck by a white Porsche Cayenne SUV. The victim was identified in news reports as 22-year-old Frederick Frazier."The driver of the SUV that hit the young man was heading east on Manchester when the collision occurred. LONDON (AP) — A half-million people in the English city of Liverpool will be regularly tested for COVID-19 in Britain's first citywide trial of widespread, rapid testing that the government hopes will be a new weapon in combatting the pandemic.In a statement Tuesday, the government said that testing would begin later this week at sites throughout the city using various technologies, including new methods that can provide results in an hour or less.Everyone who lives or works in the city in northwestern England will be offered the test, regardless of whether they have symptoms.Through a partnership between Liverpool City Council, NHS Test, and Trace and Ministry of Defence, the government would provide the tests.The government said approximately 2,000 military personnel on Thursday would help plan the logistics and deliver tests."Anyone who tests positive, using either a lateral flow test or an existing swab test, must self-isolate along with their household immediately, and their contacts will be traced," officials stated in the press release.The government said anyone who tests – and contacts required to self-isolate – will be entitled to the ￡500 Test and Trace Support Payment.On Monday, 18,950 new confirmed cases of coronavirus were recorded in the UK, the BBC reported. 1301

LOS ANGELES (AP) — California’s plan to safely reopen its economy will begin to require counties to bring down coronavirus infection rates in disadvantaged communities that have been harder hit by the pandemic. The complex new rules announced late Wednesday set in place an “equity metric.” It will force larger counties to control the spread of COVID-19 in areas where Black, Latino and Pacific Islander groups have suffered a disproportionate share of the cases because of a variety of socioeconomic factors.
