DALIAN, May 25 (Xinhua) -- China started the trading of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) futures contracts at 9 a.m. at DALIAN Commodity Exchange Monday, with September contract V909 opening 275 yuan higher at 6575 yuan per ton.     After steel futures and rice futures, this is the third new futures trading launched in China this year.     PVC is a kind of synthetic resin widely used in construction, plumbing, electric wires and packaging. China is the world's largest PVC manufacturer, with an annual output of 8.82 million tonnes last year. BEIJING, May 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Wednesday called on officials to read more books and take reading and study as "life attitude, responsibility and spiritual pursuit."     Xi told officials attending an opening ceremony of a seminar of the Party School of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, "Books are carrying human knowledge and wisdom and are of vital importance to human advancement."     As president of the Party School, Xi asked officials to read enlightening books so as to build the Party into an academic one.     Xi, also member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, said officials could gain inspiration, expand their mental outlook and improve their cultural attainment through reading, which could also enrich their working experience.

ROME, May 20 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo met here Wednesday evening with Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi.     Wu is the first chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) who has visited Italy since 1997.     Before meeting with Berlusconi, Wu also met with Italian Senate President Renato Schifani Wednesday morning and signed an agreement on establishing a mechanism of regular exchanges between the Chinese NPC and the Italian Senate.     During his meetings with Italian leaders in Rome, Wu expressed the willingness of strengthening economic cooperation with Italy as a way to counter the impact of international financial crisis.     In an earlier meeting with Chinese entrepreneurs who are doing business in Italy, Wu said the financial crisis has brought about new opportunities for cooperation between Chinese and Italian companies.     The Italian leaders expressed the willingness to expand cooperation with China in various fields, saying China's economic growth will hopefully provide new energy for the recovery and rally of world economy.     Both sides agreed that the two countries should coordinate their stance on reform of the international financial system and work for an early recovery of global economy from the financial crisis.     China saw an economic growth of 6.1 percent in the first quarter of this year, the lowest quarterly figure in years. Meanwhile, the European Union economy dropped 4.6 percent in the same period.     China and Italy have maintained a sound momentum in bilateral links. The two sides have consolidated political trust and maintained close communication and coordination on major international issues.     Leaders of the two countries have maintained contact on a regular basis. Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi visited China last October and met with Chinese President Hu Jintao. ZAGREB, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived in the Croatian capital of Zagreb Friday for a state visit to strengthen the comprehensive cooperative partnership between the two nations.     This is the first visit to Croatia by a Chinese head of state since the two countries established diplomatic ties 17 years ago.     In Zagreb, President Hu is expected to meet Croatian leaders to discuss how to enhance bilateral cooperation and exchange views on major regional and global issues of common concern.     The two countries are expected to sign a host of cooperation deals involving various sectors during the visit.     "I believe that President Hu's visit to Croatia will have great impact on consolidating traditional friendship between China and Croatia and deepening all-round and mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries," said Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Li Hui last week.
