NEW YORK CITY — From Times Square to Herald Square and along Fifth Avenue, stores across the city are boarding up window displays in preparation for possible chaos surrounding the presidential election. The sight of boarded-up windows has some New Yorkers feeling tense and anxious about the Democratic process.Incidents in the New York area over the weekend served as a preview of potential unrest on Election Day or the days following.Tensions flared between protesters and police in Chelsea on Sunday, resulting in 11 people arrested, the NYPD said. A Black Lives Matter group had gathered waiting for a caravan of President Donald Trump supporters that never showed.Meanwhile, hundreds of vehicles draped with flags and banners in support of Trump snarled traffic around the New York metropolitan area Sunday.According to The Associated Press, a large caravan of Trump supporters traveled through Rockland and Westchester counties and Queens, in some cases stopping traffic without further incident. In addition, videos posted online showed hundreds of vehicles at a standstill around noon in the northbound express lanes of the Garden State Parkway near Lakewood, New Jersey. Police say the incident caused a 5-mile backup.A separate caravan is being investigated by the FBI in San Antonio, Texas after swarming a Joe Biden campaign bus and allegedly trying to run staffers off the road ahead of a rally.Trump, in a Sunday tweet, called the supporters in that caravan "patriots" who "did nothing wrong."The Associated Press reports that more than two million people in New York state have already cast in-person ballots during the state's early voting period.Additionally, over a million New York voters have already returned absentee ballots, election officials said. This story was originally published by Anthony DiLorenzo on WPIX in New York City. 1861

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced he is resigning from his office on Monday, just hours after a report surfaced of four women accusing Schneiderman of physical violence against them. Two women, Michelle Manning Barish and Tanya Selvaratnam, spoke on the record to the New Yorker, both saying they had been romantically involved with Schneiderman but that the violence was nonconsensual.According to The New Yorker, Barish and Selvaratnam said he had hit and choked them, and that they later sought medical attention because of it. Selvaratnam also alleged that Schneiderman threatened to tap her phone, among other threats. Both women alleged that the incidents often occurred after Schneiderman had been drinking. 761

NEW YORK (AP) — The operator of Ann Taylor and Lane Bryant filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Thursday, the latest retailer to do so during the pandemic. Ascena Retail Group, which operates nearly 3,000 stores mostly at malls, has been dragged down by debt and weak sales for years. In a press release, the company said they were closing all of their plus-size stores Catherines. The company also said in the release that they plan to "strategically reduce its footprint with the closing of a significant number of Justice stores and a select number of Ann Taylor, LOFT, Lane Bryant, and Lou & Grey stores."It joins other retailers that have filed for bankruptcy in recent weeks, including Brooks Brothers, Neiman Marcus, J.C. Penney, and J. Crew. These retailers were already struggling with poor sales, but the forced closure of stores in March to reduce the spread of the coronavirus put them further in peril. Experts believe that there will be another wave of bankruptcies this fall that will include companies that had been healthy before the pandemic struck. 1076

NEW YORK (AP) — A new federal report shows vaping rates among U.S. teenagers fell dramatically this year. The drop comes in the wake of last year's outbreak of vaping-related illnesses and deaths. The national survey found that just under 20% of high school students and 5% of middle schools students were recent users of electronic cigarettes and other vaping products. That marks a big decline from a similar survey last year that found about 28% of high school students and about 11% of middle school students recently vaped. That's a decline of about 1.8 million teens total. The survey was done by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They looked at survey data from middle school and high school students, grades 6-12.Despite the progress in lowering the number of teens using e-cigarettes, there are 3.6 million youth who currently use them. Of those, almost 83% use flavored e-cigarettes or vaping products. In addition to the survey, the FDA announced their premarket review requirement of tobacco products to ensure they go through a “robust scientific evaluation” before hitting store shelves. 1156
