TAMPA BAY (AP) — NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the league plans to invite vaccinated health care workers to the Super Bowl in Tampa, Florida, as guests of the league. In a letter to Rob Higgins, president of the host committee for the Super Bowl, that was obtained by The Associated Press, Goodell wrote that he wanted to “honor and thank health care workers for their extraordinary service during a pandemic” as well as promote the importance of vaccinations and the wearing of masks in public.Goodell added in the letter: “We all know that over the past year, these frontline workers have put their own lives at risk to the benefit of society and we owe them our ongoing gratitude. We also know that they will remain essential for months to come to treat those who are ill and administer vaccines. We hope that in some small way, this initiative will inspire our country and recognize these true American heroes as we look forward to a better and healthier year.”According to USA Today, the league is still deciding how many fans will be able to attend the Super Bowl.Super Bowl LV is scheduled to be played at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay on Feb. 7. 1171

The Arizona state prison near Yuma is under lockdown after authorities were able to contain a riot involving hundreds of inmates Thursday night.Inmates reportedly attacked prison personnel around 6:45 p.m local time at the medium-custody Cheyenne Unit of the complex.Officials say around 600 inmates were involved in the disturbance, which included throwing rocks, setting fire to mattresses and other property in the yard and breaking into the prison health unit. ADC response and tactical teams from Yuma, Lewis, and Tucson complexes brought the incident under control around 9 pm., according to a statement from corrections officials. All prison staff are safe and accounted for.The inmates involved are being contained in a fenced recreation yard as ADC investigates. Additional criminal charges are pending for any inmates involved in violent activity.  900

Tattoos can tell you a lot about who a person is.“It’s been quite a journey for the tattoos I have," said Arno Michaelis.Michaelis still has one left from the person he says he used to be.As a teenager in the late 80s, Michaelis was a founding member of what became the largest racist skinhead gang in the world. He was also the front man for a white power metal band.“At one point, I had a swastika on this middle finger, specifically if people want to get in my face and they’re hostile to me I can show it to them," he said.Back then, he preached hate and white supremacy. It's an ideology believed to have grown 55 percent since 2017 in the US, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center."Believe that white people are different than everyone else, superior than everyone else, threatened by everyone else," Michaelis says of what he once believed. For seven years, it's who Michaelis was, but today, he says he’s a changed man."I’ve since had the swastika removed. It was covered up with this tattoo ‘Love Wins,’" he said.He says he woke up when in 1994, he was a single father."It hit me. Death or prison was going to take me from my daughter,” he recalled.Today, he uses who he was to pull others from that hate.Michaelis’ has now been telling his story for a decade and has written two books called "Gift of our Wounds" and "My Life After Hate."He works with organizations like Serve 2 Unite and Parents for Peace. He tells students about how he left his life of hate behind and works to help those at risk of going down the same path he did.“Today, I intentionally practice a story that says human beings have more in common than they do different," he said. "With that story, defining my relationship with the world, it’s a life where everywhere I go, I see family.”Michaelis plans to remove to cover his last remaining racist tattoo. Unlike ink that can be covered, he says the issues our society now faces must be confronted.“I think right now, this movement of Black Lives Matter, is really catalyzing, not just in the US, but around the world,” he said. “It’s a beautiful thing that people are waking up to the suffering that race has caused our fellow human beings.” 2190

The Arctic is experiencing a multi-year stretch of unparalleled warmth "that is unlike any period on record," according to the 2018 Arctic Report Card, a peer-reviewed report released Tuesday morning from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, an agency within the United States Department of Commerce. The report states that human-caused climate change is transforming the Arctic, both physically through the reduction of sea ice, and biologically through reductions in wildlife populations and introduction of marine toxins and algae. The report is yet another study from part of the US government indicating that climate change is real and having a profound impact, despite denials from the President and senior members of his Administration.Temperatures in the Arctic are warming more than twice as fast as the overall planet's average temperature, with temperatures this year in the highest latitudes (above 60 degrees north) coming in 1.7 degrees Celsius (3.1 degrees Fahrenheit) above the 1981-2010 average. These were the second warmest (behind 2016) air temperatures ever recorded during the Arctic year, which runs from October through September to avoid splitting the winter season. The five years since 2014 have been warmer than any other years in the historical record, which goes back to 1900. Although Arctic temperatures have been subject to wild swings back and forth through the decades due to natural variability, they have been consistently warmer than average since 2000 and at or near record since 2014, the report states."The changes we are witnessing in the Arctic are sufficiently rapid that they cannot be explained without considering our impacts on the chemistry of the atmosphere," Thomas Mote, a research scientist at the University of Georgia who authored part of the report, told CNN in an email.Mote expressed than any natural cycle or mechanism that would lead to the amount of warming and ice loss that has been observed would take much longer than the few years over which we have seen these drastic changes. 2074
