SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In the late '80s Gary Cheatham founded Auntie Helen's in a one-car garage in North Park in 1988.Gary did fluff-and-fold laundry first for one, then for a handful of friends who were sick with AIDS."Everybody could do it. But nobody would do it. And I think that makes him a superhero in my eyes," says Auntie Helen's current Executive Director, Rod Legg.Fear and stigma at the time hurt the LGBT community as much as the disease, but word spread quickly about Gary's services, and Auntie Helen's grew. Sadly, so did the disease.HIV and AIDS claimed more than 100,000 lives in the U.S. in the 1980s. Many of Gary's clients and friends who died willed their estates to Auntie Helen's.Their belongings accumulated in Gary's garage, which was also where he did laundry. Eventually, with help from a few high-powered friends and other activists, Gary opened Auntie Helen's thrift store in 1989.The laundry service and the thrift store are still located in North Park."We also do COVID-19 [laundry], which is our frontline medical workers. That's a tie in to the past, we had to do that. We had to offer that," Legg says.They're expanding the store, and their outreach, giving out free groceries to their regular clients (about 25-35 individuals) and now also to frontline workers.With COVID-19 leaving so many more people on hard times, they started delivering groceries — no questions asked, no referral needed. At one point, to more than 300 people.Legg explains, "this is everybody's HIV in a sense... We don't know where we're at. We're all wondering what's going to happen the next day, but most importantly is neighbor to neighbor we need to make sure we're taking care of each other."All in keeping with the legacy of Gary Cheatham, about whom, Legg says, "this man was way before his time... Can you imagine the faces of the people that got the hugs, and the clothes? We should all be our heroes, for each other." 1943
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In anticipation of its members returning, 24 Hour Fitness locations around San Diego County have made several changes that will allow them to follow county health guidelines and keep their doors open.Under the state’s tiered system for businesses, 24 Hour Fitness is among those able to resume indoor operations, but with specific modifications in place.The fitness centers are now requiring reservations for 90-minute workout sessions, and each location can only operate at 10 percent capacity, so they have to keep a close eye on how many people are inside of the building.While reservations will not be required for clubs in San Diego County, each club in the county will be capped at a 10 percent capacity.Jeremy Franke, Regional Vice President of 24 Hour Fitness, said, “We have a check-in system where we can check at any time and know how many people are in the club. And when we reach capacity, our system flags and says we’re at capacity. And we’ll have the next person wait. Like retail stores, we let one in and one out if we get full.”Once inside the gym, social distancing is a must. There are signs and markers that remind members about staying six feet apart.24 Hour Fitness has also stepped up with cleaning and disinfecting, shutting everything down for 30-minute periods throughout the day to do so.Some things will remain closed, such as spas, saunas, pools, and basketball courts. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Kensington's historic Ken Cinema, an institution in the San Diego neighborhood for nearly 75 years, is closing its doors for good this March.The theater will shut down after March 22, a spokesperson with owner Landmark Theaters told 10News.According to the spokesperson, "After long consideration and much effort, we regret that we are unable to continue operating the Ken Cinema ... The company recognizes what a cherished asset the Ken has been to the neighboring community. The changing theatrical landscape and challenges to independent exhibition are the major contributing factors."RELATED: Poway bowling alley to close in latest big change to busy corridorSince 1946, Ken Cinemas has operated in Kensington on Adams Avenue, bringing local theater-goers independent and foreign films, and restored classic movies. It was the first theater to specialize in the film genres in San Diego.According to Landmark Theaters, the 300-seat cinema is the last single-screen theater in San Diego.In 1975, Landmark Theaters became the theater's owner. The Ken had already faced closure under the Landmark brand in 2014, leading to outraged fans voicing their concerns on social media. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It's survival of the fittest once again for gyms and fitness centers across the county as San Diego braces for stricter pandemic-related restrictions that go into effect Saturday.One gym preparing for the big shift is major chain 24 Hour Fitness. While members can't choose from their dozens of locations to workout, seven county locations will be open and offering outdoor equipment to members."We're committed to staying outdoors, staying safe, and the well-being of our members is the priority," said 24 Hour Fitness district manager John Amato.Amato told ABC 10News that member visits will be reservation based with 90-minute windows, minimized to 57 guests at a time.While many prepared for what's to come, others like gym owner Tom Green of Green Speed Training in Eastlake did the opposite. Instead of expanding his outdoor space for members, he doubled the square footage on the inside, even though guests won't be allowed to workout indoors until the county falls in a less restrictive tier."It's certainly risky, but I've always been kind of a risk taker and I go with my gut instinct, and if I feel good about it, I go for it," Green said.Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, Green said support from the Eastlake community along with members of his gym have helped keep things afloat and allowed him to upgrade indoor space."It's very supportive, and we have a lot of great clients who really support what we're doing,” said Green.Regardless, both gyms said they'll continue to be there for their clients no matter which tier San Diego slips into next."To get that one-hour workout in, and de-stress to stay healthy, that's what our goal is,” said Amato. 1691
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Local community activists put together a report that shows what they’re calling the roadmap to racial inequality, basing it on housing data from the 1930s.On Thursday morning, members of the community used red paint to outline zoning lines of the streets of Kensington. The lines were a physical representation of what happened after the Great Depression under the order of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.Ricardo Flores, executive director of Local Initiatives Support Corporation, said, “The very benign use of zoning actually created segregation this day. It says if you can buy 7,000 square feet of land then you can live in this neighborhood.”Flores’ group and other organizations took to the streets to promote the data.“Today, in this day and age, you can ask a high school kid, ‘Where do black and brown people live?’ You ask any adult, ‘Where do black and brown people live? How do they know that? How is it so embedded in us?” said Flores.The activists hope to get support from San Diego officials and a promise in changing the way housing decisions are made.Flores said, “They should look at that parcel of land and allow them to be subdivided, sold, or build on it and rent it out.” 1221
