As many former college students are getting a reprieve from paying federal student loans, some Democratic leaders are calling on the next president to suspend payments permanently.On Thursday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called on forgiving federal student loans for those owing less than ,000. Schumer is proposing a resolution to outline how the president should forgive student debt.The resolution would not be applicable to private student loans.In a statement, Schumer said, “For far too long the sunny, American optimism of our young people has been clouded by crippling student debt. Education is supposed to be a ladder up, but studies have shown that student loans hold people back and prevent young college graduates from owning homes or starting small businesses. This holds our entire economy back, which we cannot afford after the financial devastation of COVID. That is why I will prioritize student debt forgiveness in 2021."Schumer’s comments came as the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions met with experts on the government’s student aid program FAFSA.A 2017 federal government study found that 20% of students who took out college loans during the 2003-04 academic year had paid off their debt within 12 years. Those taking out loans that year were more likely to have defaulted on a loan at least once.Dr. Judith Scott-Clayton, an economics researchers at Columbia University, went before the US Senate on Thuesday. Facing questions from Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Scott-Clayton said that the impact of student loan debt is particularly crippling to minorities.“It's really shockingly bad,” Scott-Clayton told the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. “Even prior to the pandemic, nearly half of Black student loan borrowers would experience a student loan default within 12 years of college entry. That's-- compared to about a third of Hispanic borrowers and one in five white student borrowers. It's so bad that a Black college graduate with a bachelor's degree is more likely to experience a default than a white college dropout. And unfortunately, these stats might get worst due to the pandemic.”Last month, President Donald Trump extended a moratorium on federal student loan payments. Borrowers are not obligated to repay federal student loans through the rest of the year. The executive order was signed due to the economic fallout stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.Collectively, Americans owe .54 trillion in student loan debt, which is nearly 0 billion more than owed on auto loans, and nearly twice the amount owed on credit cards.While many college grads are straddled with debt, having a college degree has a significant impact on earnings. ANTIOCH, Tennessee (WSMV) -- Exactly one week after a gunman opened fire on a Waffle House in Antioch killing four people and injuring others, community members gathered at the site to remember the victims.At exactly 3:20 this morning, people held a moment of silence, prayers and sang a song at Waffle House in honor of the victim's of last week's shooting.The group Partners in the Struggle organized the event at Waffle House this Sunday morning so that the community could gather in prayer as well as offer comfort and support to those affected by last week's shooting."What I would tell the families is [to] stay strong," said Earl Jordan of Partners in the Struggle. "God's grace and mercy [are] tremendous and we're praying. We're praying for them. We're praying for James Shaw Jr. Thank God for him, for coming out of his own self to save himself and save others."Supporters say the goal of the event is to continue the healing process and help the community move forward from the terrible tragedy.At 7 a.m., community members held another moment of silence, "standing tall" five minutes for or each of the eight victims of the Waffle House shooting.The group stood silently for 40 minutes total. 1212

As Chicago continues to grapple with gun violence, one jail is trying something different in an effort to combat the problem.The program is called SAVE, and it’s spearheaded by Sheriff Tom Dart of the Cook County Jail. The program aims to save a community from gun violence by targeting people who might be able to make the biggest difference.“We can continue with the broken model, make them worse than when they came in here, because they’ll be associated with other criminals, and then jettison them to a community where they’ll be a cancer, or we can take a person who has issues, break down what those issues are, address those, and now send them back to a community where now they’re sort of a light in the community,” Sheriff Dart explains. “They went from being the cancer to where they’re the one people are talking about.”During these classes, officials and inmates will start with a game. It helps to ease the tension in a room, where the men, who are in their late teens and early 20’s, are asked to dig deep on tough topics involving their personal lives.The program also aims to help the men manage anger and resolve conflict. It even trains on how to land a job or start a career.SAVE stands for the Sheriff’s Anti-Violence Effort.“The larger population we have here are folks that could actively have their trajectory changed if given different opportunities, different ways to look at life,” Sheriff Dart explains.The SAVE program is unique to Cook County, and it’s totally voluntary. It was created as a way to combat Chicago’s gun epidemic, by tackling the cognitive behavior of the men who, for whatever reason, ended up behind bars.“The reality is if you’re [going to] address these problems, you have to address the players in the system,” says Sheriff Dart. “The players all have individual issues, all have good things and bad things that they have.”For inmate Rico Potts, it’s helping him to realize his long-term goals.“Career wise, I wanna be a psychologist. I wanna talk to kids and help kids, because I feel like my story will kinda help them,” Potts says.He’s seeing firsthand how these instructors’ stories are helping him.The program stuck with former inmate Jelani Hines, who got out of jail but still keeps in touch with the program, saying it helped him land a job.“You have to be willing to commit,” Hines says. “Nobody’s gonna hold your hand.” 2393

An Arizona family is celebrating a major milestone. Baby Henley was born with a congenital heart defect or a hole in her heart. Weighing in at only 4 pounds and 7 ounces, there was a lot of concern about her health because she just would not eat."Because of the hole in her heart, she just could not eat, it was too difficult for her, so she struggled a lot to gain weight," said Megan Beebe, Henley's mother.So, from the age of 5 months old, Henley has relied on a feeding tube to get all of her nutrition."At one point, it was giving her 100% of her nutrition. We would put all of her formula, breast milk through the feeding tube," said Beebe.In her two years since she was born, Henley has had hundreds of doctor's appointments and five surgeries. She has also been working with a feeding therapist based out of the United Cerebral Palsy of Central Arizona. Henley does not have cerebral palsy, but her mother tells KNXV they really liked the specialized therapist they have been working with, so they have stuck with the organization."We just had to keep working our way up, until one day she ate an entire Cheeto Puff all by herself," said Beebe.That one Cheeto Puff was a big milestone for Henley."It took her about 10 full minutes to eat one Cheeto Puff but she ate the whole Cheeto Puff all by herself, did not throw up," said Beebe, talking about the relief they felt. They were finally able to see the light at the end of the tunnel of Henley's tough road to being able to eat without the aid of a feeding tube.After 27 months, Henley's feeding tube was finally removed. It was a big moment for Beebe. She tells KNXV she sometimes could not help but feel like a failure as a mother."Our number one job is to feed her and keep her alive, and we couldn't do that," said Beebe."The day we finally got to take her feeding tube out, it was like, it was just a miracle.
