SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The cost of housing in California isn’t just affecting first-time home buyers, it’s also taking a toll on retirees, according to a report from Global Atlantic Financial Group. The research, based on data from more than 4,000 people nationwide, found that retirees in California spend nearly ,575 a month: 30 percent more than the average retiree in the U.S. at ,008.Housing costs that build up during working years also take a toll. Nearly half of California’s non-retired residents ages 40 and up owe an average of 4,876 on their mortgages, compared to the national average of 4,770. Global Atlantic claims that sky-high housing expenses force California residents to make sacrifices during retirement, including cutbacks on restaurants and entertainment, travel and vacations and charitable giving. Almost 40 percent of retirees nationwide are spending more than they expected."Many Americans adjust their lifestyles and cut spending once they see how quickly costs can add up in retirement," says Paula Nelson of Global Atlantic. She says it's an important lesson for those currently in the workforce to understand. "While older retirees are collecting income from employer-sponsored retirement plans, such as pensions, younger and future retirees may not receive the same benefits. Not only have pensions gradually become less common, but the data shows that younger retirees are also less likely to have much saved in other defined contribution plans, like 401(k)s," says Nelson.More than half of retirees wish they'd handled their financial planning differently, according to analysts. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The International Olympic Committee and Japanese government made an historic announcement Tuesday to postpone the 2020 summer Olympic games in Tokyo due to the coronavirus.Tuesday, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe confirmed on Twitter that the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic games have been delayed until no later than summer 2021.The announcement left several San Diegan Olympic hopefuls dashed of any immediate Olympic dreams."It's kind of hard to wrap your head around it because you have been training so long for this one moment," Allison Halverson said back in Februaray.Her tone changed Tuesday."I was kind of like, 'Ok. That's good to know.' SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The FBI said a bank robber who held up a US Bank in Rolando last week struck again Friday in La Mesa. Surveillance photos show a man entering the Wells Fargo Bank inside the Vons grocery store at 8011 University Ave. in La Mesa just before noon. The man pretended to talk on his phone before demanding money from the teller, agents said. He also threatened “to shoot” if he didn’t receive money, according to the FBI. After approaching the first counter, the man approached several tellers in an effort to get more cash, said investigators. The man spoke to tellers Aug. 15 during the US Bank robbery inside the Vons at 6155 El Cajon Blvd. “Grab a bag. Start with your 100s. Put all the money in the bag and give it to me or I'm gonna [sic] shoot,” the man said, according to agents. A helicopter searched the area near the Wells Fargo Friday afternoon but could not find the man. La Mesa Police said the man is 5’8”, in his mid-20s to early 30s, and has a tattoo of a cross on his forearm. Anyone with information about the robberies was asked to call the FBI. 1088

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club has canceled its racing program this weekend, July 17-19. The cancellation follows 15 jockeys recently testing positive for COVID-19. Racing is slated to resume July 24."Assuming these individuals continue to show no symptoms, they will be isolated for a total of 10 days and should be able to resume their usual activities, including riding after that time,” said Dr. Eric McDonald, Medical Director, Epidemiology & Immunizations Services, County of San Diego.Racing at the track is set to return on July 24.The 15 jockeys who tested positive are believed to be asymptomatic, officials said. “Contact tracing procedures are underway in conjunction with the San Diego Health & Human Services Agency. However, a common factor among all but one of the riders that tested positive is that they rode at the recently concluded Los Alamitos meet.”The track ordered testing of all jockeys after two riders, Flavien Prat and Victor Espinoza, tested positive for COVID-19.Espinoza, who rode American Pharaoh to horse racing’s Triple Crown in 2015, spoke about his coronavirus diagnosis earlier this week on “The Winner’s Circle” podcast.Espinoza told podcast host Bram Weinstein that he took a COVID-19 test on July 7 and did not go to Del Mar’s opening weekend because he did not receive his results until July 10.The famed jockey described his symptoms as body aches and join pain, but he did not have a cough, fever or shortness of breath."It's different from a cold.
