SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Come February, SeaWorld San Diego is hoping to fill the night sky over Mission Bay with the lights of a drone show.The California Coastal Commission began considering their proposal for a test run at a hearing near San Francisco Thursday.For decades, fireworks capped off a day of summer fun at SeaWorld. A few years ago - amid ongoing concerns over impacts on wildlife, water quality and pets - SeaWorld scaled back the shows, in favor of laser light shows. Now comes another high-flying option in the form of the drone light shows like those that have wowed at places like Universal Studios and Disney World. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the San Diego Padres reopened training camp - this time at Petco Park - a Padres fan is hoping to share one of the only seats in town for baseball.For the past eight years, Chip Messenger has leased a unit on the 15th floor in the Legend building, overlooking Petco Park."The view never disappoints. Everyone is always amazed," said Messenger.The view is about to become even more priceless because the Padres aren't expected to open up the stadium to fans when they start the season later this month. Messenger will have one of the only seats in town to watch live baseball."Looking for forward to it. I think people have been isolated and bored. Ready for something positive to happen," said Messenger.In late June, Messenger tweeted a photo of his view of Petco Park, sparking thousands of likes and hundreds of replies."They tell me, 'I'll bring the beer. I'll bring the fish tacos. Do you remember me from first grade? Do you need a new best friend?'" said Messenger.Messenger will be making a lot of new frends. This season, he plans to share his balcony with other baseball fans."This is a unique opportunity, and I'm happy to share it with people who won't get a chance to watch baseball," said Messenger.He hasn't figured out how he'll divvy up the invites. The financial planner says he won't be accepting money, but probably won't turn down food or adult beverages. He's hoping his plans will also benefit the Padres. He counts about a hundred nearby balconies facing the stadium, which could translate into a lot of cheering."Probably going to be one of the few places in the country where we fans can actually watch our team play. Who knows, maybe the Padres could have a home field advantage. Could be pretty cool," said Messenger.Messenger is planning COVID precautions for his Padres viewing days.Only a handful of teams has similar views outside their stadium. At Wrigley Field in Chicago, the Cubs plan to open up the nearby rooftops at 25% capacity. 1998

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - California state Assemblyman and San Deigo mayoral candidate Todd Gloria said he received serious threats of physical violence through social media Wednesday evening.Officials from Gloria's campaign said Thursday that the threats have been reported to the San Diego Police Department and are being investigated. ABC 10News reached out to SDPD Thursday regarding the threats, but the department did not immediately respond.Gloria's campaign said the threats come after former San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio flooded voters with texts attacking Gloria for his support of SB-145.The bill lets a judge decide whether to force someone to register as a sex offender in certain circumstances after having sex with a minor. The bill is meant to end discrimination against LGBTQ individuals.RELATED: Ad accuses Barbara Bry of sleeping on the jobGloria said DeMaio's texts to voters are an effort to support Gloria's opponent in the mayoral race, City Councilmember Barbara Bry. Demaio has said he has not endorsed Bry.Gloria issued the following statement on Thursday regarding the threats:"Since KUSI and Carl DeMaio started knowingly misinforming voters about SB-145 in an effort to support my opponent, I have received multiple messages threatening physical violence. After receiving one last night brandishing a gun, it is clear that my campaign team and I must take this seriously. As such, we have reported the threats to the San Diego Police Department, and they are currently investigating.While I refuse to let this paralyze our campaign, voters deserve to know that this is what Barbara Bry's campaign is inspiring. Her campaign is bringing out the worst of who we are. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As a woman lay paralyzed from a horrific accident, police say someone was inside her car, stealing from her.  The search for that thief is now turning to San Diego County."She was the nicest, most wonderful person I've ever known," said Don Nelson.Nelson says his wife of 27 years, Terri, was on her way to pick up her father for a hospital trip in August when a truck rear-ended her car at a stoplight in Riverside.  As she lay with her neck broken, amid the commotion of bystanders and first responders coming to her aid, police say someone got into her car and stole her purse.Detectives say within days of the accident, surveillance images show her using Terri's credit cards and writing checks in her name. Nelson says as some ,000 worth of purchases were made at various businesses, from fast food restaurants and Albertsons to Costco."I think that's the lowest form of life that could possibly be. You have to be a sorry person to do something like that," said Nelson.For three months, Terri was paralyzed and on a ventilator, until she passed last week from complications from the accident.  Her husband's grief is not the only emotion that consumes him. There is also anger. He's still dealing with collection agencies seeking money from the thief's shopping spree.  During that crime spree, police believe the woman rented a Nissan Rogue in Terri's name, before the CHP pulled that car over on a highway in San Diego County. The two men inside the car have yet to lead detectives to the woman, but police hope tips from the public will."I just can't believe a lightning bolt didn't strike the person. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — City Council members will consider two proposals to develop vacant city-owned properties into permanent housing for homeless veterans, seniors, and youth and young adults.The two proposals, conditionally awarded development bids by the city, will also provide on-site supportive services. One proposal by Community Housing Works’ includes building 26 units for chronically homeless youth and young adults on a .336-acre site at the former Serra Mesa Library. That proposal includes on-site case management by YMCA Youth and Family Services. Ideally, the development would open in August 2023.The second proposal by San Diego Community Housing Corporation would turn the 1.42-acre Scripps Ranch Park and Ride site into 60 units for veterans and seniors. San Diego Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly would provide on-site services. That proposal aims to open in January 2024."After a comprehensive review, we determined that both organizations submitted well-qualified and responsive proposals," said Deputy Chief Operating Officer Erik Caldwell. "Now, we will work on presenting both proposals to the City Council, so construction on these vital permanent housing projects can commence as soon as possible."The two proposals are in addition to two recent hotel purchases by the city to help homeless individuals transition into permanent housing. Last year, Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced that eight city properties would be offered up to develop into permanent supportive housing as well.In 2019, San Diego's Community Action Plan on Homelessness identified the need to increase permanent supportive housing by 2,659 units within the next 10 years, with 60% of those units developed within the first four years.A date hasn't been announced as to when the council will consider the two latest proposals. 1841
