ATHENS, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Senior Chinese legislator Chen Zhili on Saturday called for the promotion of gender equality through education.Since the Fourth World Conference on Women, society has become more aware that the empowerment of women and the improvement of their status is critical to economic, political and social development, Chen said during a keynote speech at the UNESCO forum on gender equality in Athens.Chen, vice chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), said China has witnessed great improvement in the status of women in recent years.With the implementation of the Women Protection Law as well as other national policies on gender equality, the rights of Chinese women in the area of education, work and politics are guaranteed, Chen said.Chen also spoke highly of the efforts made by UNESCO to promote sustainable development through gender equality.During her speech, Chen made several proposals to promote gender equality. The proposals included creating a stronger voice for gender equality that should be heard by all people, especially male decision makers, she said. BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- Vice Premier Li Keqiang has said China would advance practical cooperation with the European Union (EU) in all areas.Li made the remarks Friday when meeting with a delegation from the European People's Party and European Democrats (EPP-ED), which is the largest group in the European Parliament.China hopes the two sides work together to expand common interests, respect each other's core interests and major concerns, so as to promote the China-EU relationship in a maturer and more steady way, Li said during the meeting.Since the two sides forged diplomatic ties 35 years ago, China and the EU had scored leap-forward development in bilateral relationship, which was exerting more and more influence to the world peace and development, Li said.Noting inter-party contacts constitute an important part of China-EU relations, Li, also member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said the CPC is willing to deepen dialogue and exchanges with the EPP-ED.Joseph Daul, chairman of the EPP-ED and also head of the delegation, said he is willing to cement inter-party exchanges with the CPC and push forward the EU-China relations.

BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang Thursday ordered centrally-administered state-owned enterprises (SOEs) to achieve greater development over the next five years.Zhang also required the SOEs to boost efforts to reform while optimizing industrial structures and reinforcing management.He made the remarks during an inspection tour of the China Electronics Technology Group Co., one of the nation's 122 centrally-administered SOEs.Zhang said the centrally-administered SOEs, as the backbone of China's economy, should focus on increasing their competitive edge while developing hi-tech industries and nurturing their own brands with independent intellectual property rights.During the January-to-September period, the combined net profit of China's centrally-administered SOEs totalled 641.65 billion yuan (96.6 billion U.S. dollars), up 55 percent year on year.
