The list of places intended for sporting events, entertainment, and other everyday activities, that are instead being used as temporary hospitals just got longer. On Tuesday, work began to convert the indoor tennis center at the Billie Jean King U.S. Open facility into a 350-bed temporary hospital. It joins a group of nine locations in or near New York City being converted into temporary hospitals. All but one of the temporary facilities are intended to handle non-coronavirus patients. However, doctors are fast learning that there may be no such thing."That was one of the initial most surprising things for us," said Dr. Eric Wei, NYC Health + Hospitals' chief quality officer. "People who got hit by cars or were beat up," Dr. Wei continued, "had pneumonia that's consistent for COVID-19."It's why the city is now instructing its medical personnel to assume that all patients have coronavirus. The temporary facilities are part of a constellation of hospitals in the city and its suburbs where patients can be moved and treated, depending on their condition. More than 170 hospitals and temporary hospitals are part of the network, and on Monday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo promised that a central command center would be operational by Tuesday to coordinate them all. "It is up and running," said Deanne Criswell, the city's emergency management commissioner at a news conference on Tuesday afternoon. "It's located at the Javits Center."Criswell added that, for now, the command center is only coordinating between two locations, the U.S.N.S. Comfort hospital ship, and the temporary hospital at the Jacob Javits Center. The full center is not expected to be fully operational until next week. 1705

The Bakersfield Police Department in California has arrested a 23-year-old man who officials said forced his pregnant girlfriend to ingest numerous unknown pills in an effort to force a miscarriage. According to BPD, on Wednesday around 1:00 a.m. officers received a report of suspicious circumstances. The person who called police claimed a pregnant family member, the victim, had been held at gunpoint and forced by the victim's boyfriend to ingest numerous unknown-type pills to try to force a miscarriage. Officers responded to a local hospital where the victim was and confirmed the story with the victim. BPD said the victim did have a miscarriage as a result of the incident. Police identified the suspect as Jagmeet Sandhu, 23, and executed search warrants at locations associated with Sandhu and found evidence that corroborated the reported offenses. Sandhu was taken into custody without incident near 17th Street and Truxtun Avenue. He was later booked into the Kern County Jail for several criminal charges including murder, domestic assault, and false imprisonment. The investigation is ongoing. The first participant in a clinical trial for a vaccine to protect against the new coronavirus will receive an experimental dose on Monday, according to a government official. The National Institutes of Health is funding the trial, which is taking place at the Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute in Seattle. The official who disclosed plans for the first participant spoke on condition of anonymity because the move has not been publicly announced.Public health officials say it will take a year to 18 months to fully validate any potential vaccine. Testing will begin with 45 young, healthy volunteers with different doses of shots co-developed by NIH and Moderna Inc. There’s no chance participants could get infected from the shots, because they don’t contain the virus itself. The goal is purely to check that the vaccines show no worrisome side effects, setting the stage for larger tests.Dozens of research groups around the world are racing to create a vaccine as COVID-19 cases continue to grow. Importantly, they’re pursuing different types of vaccines — shots developed from new technologies that not only are faster to produce than traditional inoculations but might prove more potent. Some researchers even aim for temporary vaccines, such as shots that might guard people’s health a month or two at a time while longer-lasting protection is developed. Also in the works: Inovio Pharmaceuticals aims to begin safety tests of its vaccine candidate next month in a few dozen volunteers at the University of Pennsylvania and a testing center in Kansas City, Missouri, followed by a similar study in China and South Korea.Even if initial safety tests go well, “you’re talking about a year to a year and a half” before any vaccine could be ready for widespread use, according to Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of NIH’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. That still would be a record-setting pace. But manufacturers know the wait — required because it takes additional studies of thousands of people to tell if a vaccine truly protects and does no harm — is hard for a frightened public.President Donald Trump has been pushing for swift action on a vaccine, saying in recent days that the work is “moving along very quickly” and he hopes to see a vaccine “relatively soon.”Today, there are no proven treatments. In China, scientists have been testing a combination of HIV drugs against the new coronavirus, as well as an experimental drug named remdesivir that was in development to fight Ebola. In the U.S., the University of Nebraska Medical Center also began testing remdesivir in some Americans who were found to have COVID-19 after being evacuated from a cruise ship in Japan. For most people, the new coronavirus causes only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia. The worldwide outbreak has sickened more than 156,000 people and left more than 5,800 dead. The death toll in the United States is more than 50, while infections neared 3,000 across 49 states and the District of Columbia. The vast majority of people recover. According to the World Health Organization, people with mild illness recover in about two weeks, while those with more severe illness may take three weeks to six weeks to recover.___The Associated Press receives support for health and science coverage from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Department of Science Education. The House Rules Committee met on Tuesday to decide on the process for Wednesday's House session, which will likely result in the impeachment of President Donald Trump. By a 9-4 party line vote, the Rules Committee decided that there will be six hours of debate on the House floor on Wednesday. The six hours will be divided evenly between the two parties. Members of the House will then vote on the two articles of impeachment being offered by House Democrats -- one on obstruction of Congress and another on abuse of power -- individually. Earlier on Tuesday, the Associated Press reported that enough Democrats plus Congress' lone independent have committed to voting for articles of impeachment against Trump. The result would result in Trump becoming the third president in American history to be impeached. The House said that Wednesday's session will get underway at 9 a.m. ET, but it is unclear exactly what time debate on the impeachment will start. 969

The family of retired FBI agent Robert Levinson says U.S. government officials have concluded that he has died while in the custody of Iran. The family says in a statement posted on Twitter that it did not have information about how or when Levinson had died, but it occurred before the recent coronavirus outbreak. The family says it “will spend the rest of our lives without the most amazing man, a new reality that is inconceivable to us.” Levinson disappeared on Iran's Kish Island in 2007 while on an unauthorized CIA mission.President Donald Trump was asked whether he was aware of the reports. He said Levinson's status "wasn't looking good," but did not accept reports that Levinson has died. 713
