SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Five locations of the San Diego County YMCA reopened today. They include Dan McKinney, Jackie Robinson, Magdalena Ecke, McGrath Family, and the Mission Valley branches.But with ever-changing rules by the State and County, staff and members of the YMCA understand that this reopening may be short-lived.Twice a day, Doug Harrigan would come to the Mission Valley YMCA. But since the COVID-19 quarantine began, he switched to working out at home."It's been rough," Harrigan said.Now he's back."I had a chance to talk to the members that I used to see on a regular basis, and it just felt good to do a real workout in a gym rather than my living room."Starting July 1, 2020, Mission Valley, Dan McKinney (La Jolla), Jackie Robinson (Mt. Hope), Magdalena Ecke (Encinitas), and McGrath Family (Spring Valley) YMCA branches are open, at a modified capacity."Masks required, health check stations, signage everywhere, and we've separated the fitness equipment to the 6-foot social distancing requirements," Assistant Executive Director of the Mission Valley YMCA, Jason Milosh said.At this point, group exercise classes and pools remain closed.Last week, some branches, including Mission Valley, opened up its Kids Day Camps. This year, space is extremely limited due to social distancing rules, and there will not be any field trips. But parents are happy that they are keeping busy."Summer learning loss has been aggravated by the challenges that our school system has had in the last few months of school," Molish said. "So, we have incorporated some more academic components to our summer camps to help kids bridge that summer learning loss."But with the State and County coming out with new rules, seemingly every week, gyms and community centers like the YMCA, must be flexible."Re-closing is a possibility, and we are prepared for that," Milosh said. "We feel good about the precautions that we have taken, but if things worsen and it is determined that we need to close, then we are going to be prepared to do that."But for Harrigan, he hopes it does not come down to that, because with the YMCA, he says he would look and feel much different."It is essential. If I did not work out, I'd probably be 250 pounds," Harrigan laughed.On July 8, 2020, four more San Diego County YMCA branches will open. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Hoover High School Friday celebrated the topping off of one of its newest additions to campus.The campus set the final beam of its new 500-seat theater into place, with students and staff signing the steel beam before a crane lifted it into place. The event marked the latest completion in the school's massive renovation project, which has already seen the return of the school's once iconic tower. The tower, which was topped off in January 2019, could once be seen from El Cajon Blvd., before it was taken down in 1976 due to seismic safety standards.Once the renovations are completed, Hoover High will have not only its Spanish-style tower back but also a new theater with theater support and instructional space, and a three-story building accommodating counselors, support staff, and students.The new classroom building will feature 20 classrooms to replace outdated modular classrooms elsewhere on campus.The project will also see a reconfiguration of the main parking lot, courtyard improvements, and a student drop-off area. 1062

San Diego (KGTV) -- Hotel guest jolted awake after the Howard Johnson by Wyndham caught fire, early Tuesday morning.The fire erupted around 4:15 a.m. on El Cajon Blvd in the College East neighborhood.One of the rooms was destroyed, and two others were severely damaged, according to firefighters. At least 4 to 5 units are reported to be uninhabitable for various reasons.It took about 20 minutes to knock down the fire.One man staying in the unit right next to the fire, told ABC 10News he had to run right past the flames to escape.The entire hotel was evacuated, and everyone managed to get out safely. No one was hurt.Firefighters are trying to figure out if anyone was inside the unit when it caught fire. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Despite a recent drop, gas prices closed the year higher than they’ve been since 2013, according to City News Service. The average price for a gallon of regular gas dropped for the 11th day Tuesday, decreasing three-tenths of a cent to .34. The average price has fallen 7.6 cents during the streak, according to figures from AAA. The average price is 4.7 cents less than a week ago and 20.4 cents less than a month ago. Despite the drop in prices, regular gasoline is 21.4 cents more than a year ago. The sharp increase in the cost of gas was felt around California after Governor Jerry Brown signed a gas tax increase that went into effect in 2017. In November of 2018, California voters turned down Proposition 6. The measure would have repealed the most recent gas tax hike and ensured that no new gas taxes get passed without voter approval. 876

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Dozens of workers are racing to finish construction of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park's newest exhibit, "Walkabout Australia".It is scheduled to open to the public Friday, May 25. Monday, 10News was the first station invited for a behind-the-scenes tour. The various habitats are meant to reflect the deserts, plains, and rainforests of Australia.But the heart of the exhibit is a large open area in which 20 kangaroos and wallaby will be able to roam free with Safari Park guests."I think that the public will feel like there's virtually no barriers almost on the walkway going up and when they get inside. They're just going to have so much fun," said San Diego Zoo architect Robyn Badger.Zookeepers have been working with the animals before the exhibit opens, getting them comfortable with their new habitat and with being around humans.The kangaroos and wallaby are likely to approach guests on the path. If it happens, guests are asked to stay calm and avoid harassing the animals.While people are not encouraged to reach out to touch the animals first, if the animals make contact, it is okay to gently pet them."If you're calm and you're respectful of those animals, they're absolutely going to want to come and see what you're up to," said Animal Care Manager Steve Metzler.Other animals at Walkabout Australia include tree kangaroos, magpie geese, and cassowary. 1398
