(AP) — An investigation has confirmed students were subjected to a racist taunt and other verbal abuse during a high school football game in Southern California.The Orange County Register reports Sunday that San Clemente High officials say a racial slur was directed at a student from visiting Lincoln High of San Diego on Sept. 13. The slur was made inside a restroom. The school's investigation also found offensive comments were made in the San Clemente stands toward visiting fans and students.San Clemente Principal Chris Carter sent a letter Friday apologizing to both school communities.The letter did not say if any students would be disciplined.The letter said students from San Clemente and Lincoln will participate in a workshop facilitated by the Anti-Defamation League. 811

SAN DIEGO — The latest shutdown order has not been kind to San Diego restaurants this holiday season, but some chose to remain open on Christmas despite being relegated to takeout-only service. Harry Kim made the executive decision to keep north park diner open on Christmas for the first time. And to say the restaurant is stretched thin would be an understatement.“it’s hitting us really hard,” Kim said. “When we had outside dining I had employees, five of them. Right now I just work with me and my wife.”Kim has owned the diner since 2007, and says opening on Christmas provides an opportunity for more sales if everyone else was closed. He says it paid off with some extra takeout orders and others through UberEats and GrubHub.Meanwhile, at downtown's Gaslamp BBQ, a skeleton crew handled a steady stream of takeout orders. Owner Tarik Marogy always keeps the restaurant open on Christmas, so 2020 would be no different.“We know we are going to be busy today because a lot of the restaurants usually close,” Marogy said.Marogy says the barbecue has been hit hard in the pandemic. He reduced his employees from 20 to 8. In all, nearly 110,000 San Diegans worked in local restaurants in November, down more than 15 percent compared to November 2019, according to the latest state data available. That was before the most recent shutdown order went into effect.Margoy said, however, that Christmas night orders exceeded his expectations.“I didn’t expect that I'm going to have that much business because of the Covid. SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – A wildlife overpass near Salt Lake City is proving to be successful at helping animals safely migrate over a busy interstate.The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (UDWR) hailed the Parley's Canyon overpass a success in a recent Facebook post, saying it has also helped motorists stay much safer as well.In its Facebook post, UDWR included video that show many animals using the overpass to safely cross to the other side of Interstate 80. Cameras set up along the bridge captured moose, bears, porcupines, squirrels, mountain lions, deer, coyotes, and other critters.The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) and Utah State University have been monitoring the overpass throughout the year.The overpass opened in December 2018. UDOT says it spans six lanes of interstate and was constructed to improve safety on I-80 by reducing wildlife and vehicle collisions.UDOT coordinated with UDWR on the wildlife issues specific to the project, including wildlife migration patterns.While it may be tempting to visit the bridge in an attempt to spot some critters, UDWR says to keep off the overpass and not disturb the animals. 1154

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -- A Salt Lake City K-9 officer has been charged with aggravated assault in connection with an April 24 incident.Officer Nickolas John Pearce, 39, responded to a report of domestic violence that day. Pearce is accused of commanding his K-9, Tuco, to bite Jeffery Ryans, even though Ryans was on his knees and had his hands in the air."When K-9 Tuco engaged and was biting Ryans, [Pearce] continually praised and encouraged K-9 Tuco," a probable cause statement said. "While he was being attacked by K-9 Tuco, Ryans expressed extreme emotions reflective of pain from being bitten by K-9 Tuco and plead with the officers to stop the biting. He questioned why he was being attacked when he was not resisting."Ryans suffered large lacerations and required hospitalization for his injuries. After receiving treatment for his injuries, Ryans was booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on a charge of violating a protective order.In an interview with KSTU on Wednesday, Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill said they looked to see if the force used was reasonable."And in this case, the conclusion of our attorneys when we reviewed the body cam video, we looked at the reports that were generated, and we could find no lawful reason to use that police dog in the fashion that it did and resulting in the injury caused on Mr. Ryans," Gill said.(Warning: the following body camera video contains graphic language and violence) 1458
