BEIJING, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese shares staged a broad-based rebound on Wednesday, making up the previous day's losses after an overnight rally on Wall Street.     The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index finished at 2,017 points, a gain of 6.05 percent. The Shenzhen Component Index rose 6.14 percent to 6,679 points.     Combined turnover shrank to 120.81 billion yuan (17.26 billion U.S. dollars) from the previous day's 145 billion yuan.     Gains outnumbered losses by 865 to eight in Shanghai and 743 to two in Shenzhen. Sinopec rose by 10 percent to 8.37 yuan. PetroChina was up 7.49 percent, closing at 11.91 yuan. China Citic Bank gained 6.51 percent to 4.42 yuan.     Telecom shares surged on reports of an imminent approval of 3G licenses. China United Telecommunications rose 10 percent to 6.03 yuan.     A Guangfa Securities note said the rebound showed investor confidence had risen after Tuesday's decline. The sharp rises of energy and banking stocks showed institutional investors were optimistic over market prospects. 

HEFEI, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Vice Premier Hui Liangyu said on Saturday that local government should seek every means to help migrant workers land jobs, calling it "a prominent and important task" in the current rural work agenda.     Hui made the remarks when he toured east China's Anhui Province. He urged local enterprises to guarantee job opportunities for migrant workers and asked infrastructure projects contractors to hire as many migrant workers as possible.     The vocational training for the migrant workers should be strengthened, Hui said.     Migrant workers were also encouraged to go back to their hometown to start their own business, and support should be given in bank loans, tax breaks and business registration, according to Hui.     Hui also urged local government to attach great importance to the fight against drought, which plagued more than 866,700 hectares of wheat in the province. He said rural water control facility construction should be speeded up.     He also asked local authorities to enhance the control of bird flu and foot-and-mouth disease.

BEIJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao offered six proposals to promote the peaceful development of the cross-Straits relationship in a speech to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the mainland's "Message to Compatriots in Taiwan" here on Wednesday.     Hu said the mainland is willing to discuss with Taiwan proper and reasonable arrangements for Taiwan's participation in international organizations, as long as this does not create a scenario of "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan".     Although the two sides of the Taiwan Straits have been split since 1949 by a civil war, the political confrontation between them did not change the fact that they belonged to one China, he said.     "Once the two sides reach a common understanding and accordant stance on the principle of one China, the foundation of political mutual trust will be laid and anything can be talked about between the two sides," he said. "Anything that is conducive to peaceful development across the Straits, we will greatly promote. Anything that harms it, we will firmly oppose."     Hu proposed that the two sides end hostility and reach peaceful agreements under the one China principle.     The two sides can start discussion about political relations under the special condition before reunification in a pragmatic manner, he said.     He also suggested the two sides to step up contacts and exchanges on military issues "at an appropriate time" and talk about a military security mechanism of mutual trust, in a bid to stabilize cross-Straits relations and ease concerns about military security. BEIJING, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) summit concluded its first closed session here Friday evening, with the global financial crisis topping the agenda.     Leaders and representatives of the 45 ASEM members attended the meeting which lasted two hours.     Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao chaired the meeting and made the leading speech.     Wen called on Asian and European nations to make concerted effort in response to the global financial crisis triggered by the U.S. credit crunch, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.     Wen said the international financial and economic situation is an issue linked up with the direct interests of all ASEM members, and that is why the issue was listed the top subject for discussion.     "Asian and European nations are an important force to safeguard international financial stability and promote world economic growth," Wen said. "We should make concerted effort to show the world our confidence, unity and cooperation," he added.     He said relevant countries and organizations have taken measures in response to the global financial crisis, and China hopes these measures would achieve the desired results soon.     He also called for global action to jointly respond to the crisis.     The leaders present at the meeting had an "enthusiastic and in-depth" discussion on how to tackle the crisis, as well as how to promote Asia-Europe trade and investment, the Foreign Ministry said, giving no further details.     The seventh ASEM summit, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, will all together have four closed sessions.

CHENGDU, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- With red lanterns hanging from the eaves, the bangs of firecrackers outside, and tables of delicious food, the Chinese people, including millions of quake survivors, observed the Lunar New Year eve in the traditional way.     In the prefab of quake survivor Hu Suqiong, a dozen family members gathered at the table on which were traditional local foods such as preserved ham and sausage.     "I really had not expected that I could celebrate the Spring Festival with everyone in such a good prefab room," Hu's husband Chen Ziyi toasted Sunday noon's "reunion" (tuanyuan in Chinese) meal", which take place among Chinese families on the Lunar New Year's Eve.     The "Qinjian Family" prefab housing area where Hu Suqiong lives near the downtown of Dujiangyan City has 120,000 people. Dujiangyang was a worst-hit area in Sichuan Province in last May's devastating earthquake which left more than 80,000 people dead or missing.     "I feel rather satisfied and thank all those who have helped me," Chen said.     Spring Festival, which falls on Monday, is the most important holiday for Chinese. People meet relatives and eat dumplings and various delicious food. They set off firecrackers to scare off evil spirits.     For Chinese, the year 2008 was both a painful year and a proud year in which the 8.0-magnitude earthquake on May 12 in Sichuan caused huge casualties and damage, and the successful Olympic Games in August made China a focus in the world.     In Longxi Village, Wenchuan County in Sichuan, the quake epicenter, 37-year-old Chen Shixue kept his simple temporary house warm with an electric heater.
