SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A legendary sports radio station is returning to Southern California airwaves with an updated name. The Mighty 1090 abruptly went off the air on April 10, 2019, due to an issue between the station’s parent company and the owners of the Mexico-based radio tower that distributes the station’s signal. But on Monday, Aug. 17, the station once known as the Mighty 1090 will be back on the 1090 AM radio dial as "The Mightier 1090.”Bill Hagen of Mightier 1090 said in a news release, “It’s taken a tireless amount of work from a number of great people to get us to this point. It has long been our goal to give 1090 AM back to the millions of listeners of Southern California that have missed it since it went off the air almost 18 months ago and we’re doing so as The Mightier 1090!!”RELATED: Popular sports talk radio station Mighty 1090 goes off air indefinitelyThe station’s lineup will consist of a show hosted by San Diego sports radio veteran Scott Kaplan, as well as nationally-syndicated programs from well-known sports hosts Rich Eisen, Scott Ferrall, and Tony Bruno. The Mightier 1090 will officially launch at 9 a.m. on Aug. 17 with the Rich Eisen Show. The show’s time slot will be 9 a.m.-12 p.m.On weekdays, from 1 p.m.-3 p.m., Scott Ferrall’s Coast to Coast show will be on the air.Kaplan’s “Kaplan and Crew Show” will fill the primetime/drive-time slot of 3 p.m.-7 p.m. every weekday.RELATED: Mighty 1090 ends all broadcastsFerrall’s On the Bench Show will follow Kaplan’s show from 7 p.m.-9 p.m., and then the Tony Bruno/Harry Mays “Into the Night Show” will run from 9 p.m.-12 a.m.More information on The Mightier 1090’s programming can be found at www.themightier1090.comHagen added, “Launching a radio station from scratch during a pandemic with virtually no live sports taking place has been a daunting task to say the least, but we made it, and I am very proud of the product that we will be putting on the air.” 1955

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A man was fatally shot by San Diego Police as officers responded to calls of vandalism in the Mountain View neighborhood early Monday morning.According to police, officers were called to the 300 block of South Pardee Street just before 4:30 a.m. after receiving reports of “a violent disturbance involving a weapon.”Residents at the home were woken up by a man they say ripped a metal curtain rod from the window and began breaking windows and other objects.“Fearing for their safety, they asked another resident to call 911. A neighbor also heard the commotion and called 911 reporting it sounded like someone was being tortured,” police said. When officers arrived, police say they gave the man directions in English and Spanish but received no response. According to police, that’s when the man crawled through a broken window before running towards officers with a metal pole.“Fearing for their safety, one officer fired a bean bag round, one officer fired a Taser, and one officer fired several rounds from his service pistol. The man was struck by at least one round and fell to the ground where he was taken into custody,” police said.Police rendered first aid to the suspect who was taken to the hospital where he later died. The suspect and officers involved haven’t been identified at this time.Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the San Diego Police Department Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477. 1487

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego hairstylist is suing Governor Gavin Newsom over closures of indoor salons. It comes even after a revised order that allows them to operate outside.Amy Mullins-Boychack doesn’t take just any client.“They might have to pace for 15 minutes before they can regulate their anxiety to get a hair cut,” she said. She’s been cutting hair for children with special needs at her salon “THAIRapy” for eight years. Under restrictions from the state, salons are only allowed to operate outdoors. She says that’s not an option with her clients.“I have clients that don’t have impulse control,” said Mullins-Boychack. “They don’t have the ability to just sit anywhere and get a hair cut.”So she joined a lawsuit filed against the governor in March. The plaintiff, JD Bols, is a landlord to several churches and beauty salons in San Diego. The lawsuit also names Mayor Kevin Faulconer, Sheriff Bill Gore, and the County Board of Supervisors as defendants. It claims the pandemic-related restrictions violate civil rights and have financially crippled businesses deemed non-essential.“This isn’t about vanity," says Mullins-Boychack. “This is a life skill for them, this is routine, this is repetition, this is part of their livelihood, part of their social skills.”In addition to the lawsuit, she’s working to get an exemption from the governor to continue her business indoors. 1398

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego company has a solution for tired employees or students -- they've created "napping pods" which can be rented by the hour."It's a place to go, escape from a hectic environment and recharge," said Hohm CEO Nikolas Woods. The pods are small, just 43.5 square feet each. They include a fully-furnished twin-size bed, mirror, charging stations, fan, lights and light and noise dampening curtains."Every piece was put together to create the most comfort," said Woods.Right now, Woods has just three pods in service, all on the University of Arizona campus. He hopes to expand to more college campuses around the country. He's also trying to get large corporations to buy some for their employees, and he's trying to get some places in major airports as well."A lot of employees could use a break," Woods said. "Wouldn't it be better to go somewhere and recharge, get your productivity level up?"People can find and book the pods through the Hohm website. It costs around per hour, with a 30 minute minimum and 4 hour max.Woods hopes to launch an app this spring to make booking even easier. He said each installation will have an attendant nearby to help people check in, clean the pods and enforce a strict one-person-per-pod rule. 1266

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local musician is facing a painful COVID-19 toll, losing three family members and five friends to the virus.David Whitman's first loss to COVID-19 came in late April with the passing of Jeanne Fisher, his great-aunt."Went downhill fairly quickly and passed away at a nursing home in the Chicago area," said Whitman. In early June, his grandmother Beverly Whitman, 92, became sick at a nursing home in Wisconsin. She died June 13."I know the morphine they gave her. She really needed it. It was not an easy way to go," said Whitman.A few days before she passed, she was able to share a room with her husband of 69 years, Robert Whitman, 93, also diagnosed with coronavirus. He died three days after her death."His condition deteriorated pretty quickly I think after my grandmother passed away," said Whitman.Whitman's emotions are still raw."It's really tough not to be with family, not being able to get together to mourn," said Whitman.Whitman, a professional musician, is also grieving the death of five friends from the world of music. A few days ago, he released a recording of his award-winning song "I Have A Friend," which was inspired by his grandmother. It's a recording that helped him grieve."There is a healing aspect to sharing your humanity. When they listen, they experience it as well," said Whitman. He hopes those who have lost loved ones will also gain healing from his music and to convey another message for others."I have whoever hears my song will no longer question the seriousness of the pandemic and the urgency of being safe on a day-to-day basis and do things like wearing a mask," said Whitman. 1650
