Target is hiring more than 100,000 temporary workers for the holidays -- a sharp increase over last year.The company announced Wednesday that the jobs will be in stores and distribution and fulfillment centers. The workers will stock shelves, help customers, pack and load products and fill online orders.In 2016, Target brought on 77,500 temporary workers.Target will hold recruiting events at each of its 1,800 stores from October 13 through 15. The company says applicants can interview and even be offered jobs on the spot.Prospective hires can also apply online.The temporary workers get a few benefits, including a 10% discount at the store and online, and 20% for fruits, vegetables and other "wellness" products.Employees who already work at Target can increase their hours during the holiday season. 816

Supporters of President Donald Trump are planning on holding rallies this weekend in Washington, D.C.In what’s being called the Million MAGA March, supporters of the president are expected to show support of Trump’s claims of voter fraud. No credible evidence of voter fraud has been exposed. Several lawsuits filed by the Trump campaign claiming irregularities in the 2020 election have been dismissed.A handful of groups are posting on social media about gathering in locations around D.C. and the country Saturday afternoon. Groups include March for Trump, Stop the Steal, and Women for America First, according to local media.Some are suggesting they will march from the Supreme Court to the White House on Saturday, and there is a permit application for a gathering in Freedom Plaza.When asked Thursday about the rallies, White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said she expected a large turnout."I think it's going to be quite large, um, from what I'm hearing, don't have an estimate for you," McEnany said during an interview on Fox News.D.C.’s mayor said the city is preparing for Saturday, same as they did last weekend after the Associated Press and others called the presidential election in favor of Joe Biden. 1235

SUPERIOR, ARIZONA — The mother of two young children is facing murder charges after the kids were found dead in a vehicle Monday night.The Pinal County Sheriff's Office said detectives were called to the home near Richard Avenue and Palo Verde Drive around 11:15 p.m. after a 10-month-old and a 2-year-old were found dead in a car outside. Both children were found strapped in their car seats when officials arrived. Sheriff's spokeswoman Navideh Forghani said evidence at the scene indicated foul play.The mother of the two children, 20-year-old Brittany Velasquez, is facing two counts of murder. An autopsy is being conducted, according to Forghani. 675

TAMPA, Fla. -- As parents across the country grow more concerned every morning when they send their kids to school, more and more are turning to bulletproof backpacks.“After Sandy Hook, people couldn’t wrap their minds around a bulletproof backpack but now they think it’s something that they need," said Yasir Sheikh, the president of Guard Dog Security.The Sandy Hook shooting inspired Sheikh to create a backpack out of bulletproof materials. It doesn’t seem like much. The backpack has just a thin layer of kevlar, but it is certified to withstand handgun rounds.“Ideally, we think with the way things are going this should become mandatory, common for all students," said Skeikh. "It’s a sad reality, it’s become a new normal."Others feel the same. Just three days after the deadly school shooting in South Florida his company saw a 150 percent increase in the number of bags they shipped.But do they actually work?Ryan Hart is a certified firearm instructor for defense training company Ground Ready International Training, or G.R.I.T Ready. He also teaches active shooter survival courses.Hart put a barrel with sand behind the backpack to simulate a body and took aim with his Glock 19.“The rounds definitely penetrated the front of the bag here," said Hart inspecting the shot-up bag, "But if we flip it over there’s no penetration past the armor itself."Next up: the AR-15.In the last decade, this style of gun has been used in six of the 10 deadliest mass shootings throughout the country, including the Parkland school shooting.“It went right through the soft armor," Hart said after spraying the backpack with bullets from the AR-15.It's what Hart expected, as the Guard Dog Security backpack is not certified to withstand assault-style weapons. To stop bullets from a similar weapon, the backpack would need to be equipped with steel plates like those installed in military vests. However, that would make the backpack fairly heavy to carry.“I would recommend (the backpack), yes," Hart said. "While it did not stop a direct shot from an assault rifle it can still stop bullet fragments, ricochets, glass flying through the air.”Then we posed this question to Skeikh: "What do you think it says about our society that we are resorting to items like this?"The backpacks cost between 0-200. Student loan and eviction protections, as well as unemployment benefits, are among the host of pandemic related government programs set to end by the end of the year unless Congress acts. The issue is that members of Congress are not scheduled to be in Washington for several weeks between now and the end of the year. Breaks are scheduled over the Thanksgiving holiday as well as over Christmas and New Year's. The leaves just 15 business days to accomplish anything, otherwise these bills will likely go up come January WHAT'S EXPIRING Since March, 40 million Americans have enjoyed suspended student loan payments. That is scheduled to end come January 1st. While President-elect Joe Biden is considering an executive order to continue the program, he doesn't take office until January 20 and bills could be due before then. Additionally, unemployment benefits for independent contractors and the self-employeed, like Uber drivers or gig workers, are set to expire as well. Congress for months has also allowed those recently laid off to enjoy 13 bonus weeks of unemployment, but that program expires December 31 as well. Many states have eviction moratoriums but the CDC order banning evictions ends December 31st. Congress could pass legislation to extend it. Tens of millions could face evictions because of rent issues. WHERE THINGS STANDDemocrats and Republicans remain far apart on passing any legislation between now and January 1. COVID related legislation isn't the only concern either. Funding for the government runs out on December 11 and a bill must be passed to keep the government open before then.
