HEFEI, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- Nine people were killed in a traffic accident in east China's Anhui Province Wednesday, police said.A five-seat minibus, carrying nine people, made a head-on collision with a passenger bus with seven people onboard at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Mengcheng County of Bozhou City.The minibus was running on the wrong lane when the accident took place, police said.Seven of those on the minibus were killed at the site and two others died later in hospital after first-aid efforts failed.

Obama really should tread carefully. At the same time, the United States is now at risk of sparking what could be an all-out trade war," said Liam Halligan in an article carried by this week's Sunday Telegraph.Halligan, chief economist at Prosperity Capital Management, predicted that China will not yield to U.S. pressure on the issue."Beijing will eventually allow the yuan to rise, but in its own time and in order to tackle inflation and not because of U.S. pressure."Chinese inflation is now at 2.7 percent, close to the official 3-percent control target, he noted.Halligan argued that the Chinese yuan may not be under-valued as much as Western politicians have perceived.Although Chinese exports rose by 46 percent in the first two months of 2010, the rise is from a very low base -- with February 2009 being the epicenter of the U.S.-sparked sub-prime storm, he noted.He also pointed out the fact that China's trade surplus dropped by 51 percent in the same period. That means China's gain in exports were out-weighed by an import surge."This hardly suggests the yuan, as (U.S. Treasury Secretary Tim) Geithner claims, is 'way too low'," said Halligan.Geithner said in January that Obama believed China was manipulating its currency.On Obama's latest call for China to adopt a more "market-oriented exchange rate," Halligan said Washington is actually the biggest currency manipulator in the world."The reality is that America's 'weak dollar' policy -- its long-standing practice of allowing its currency to depreciate in order to lower the value of its foreign debts -- amounts to the biggest currency manipulation in human history."Halligan also noted that Washington has for years "shamefully stalled" on various rulings of the World Trade Organization that showed America to be breaching global trade rules."America needs to act smarter and get its own economic house in order. Obama has decided instead to lash out at China in a desperate attempt to placate a U.S. electorate increasingly mindful of their president's failings," said Halligan.The economist said Western politicians' blame game against emerging markets over the current global imbalances reflects their hypocrisy and lack of character."It's always easier to blame someone else for your failings... BEIJING, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Singapore-flagged tanker Pramoni, hijacked off the Somali coast last month, was escorted by a Chinese vessel to the safe waters on Friday, said the Chinese Foreign Ministry."At the request of the Singaporian side, the Chinese 'Chaohu' navy ship successfully conducted the escort mission," said a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry Friday night."All crew onboard the Singapore-flagged chemical tanker are safe and sound and emotionally stable," the statement said, without specifying the route or length of the escort mission.The cargo ship, with five Chinese sailors among the 24 crew onboard, was hijacked by Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden on Jan. 1."The Chinese escort mission provided the released vessel with necessary supplies and medical assistance," the statement said.Pramoni's captain thanked the captain and crew of the Chinese vessel helping with the escort.China sent its first escort mission to the Gulf of Aden off Somalia in early 2009. Its fourth mission is now part of a multinational coalition of warships patrolling the pirate-infested area.

BEIJING, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's operational high-speed railways have exceeded 3,300 kilometers, leading the world in both length and technologies, the Ministry of Railways said on its official website Thursday.Last year China finished two high-speed railways between Wuhan-Guangzhou and Zhengzhou-Xi'an, with an operating speed of 350 km/h. Before that, China had built high-speed railways between some of its major cities, including Beijing-Tianjin, Shijiazhuang-Taiyuan, Qingdao-Jinan, Hefei-Wuhan and Hefei-Nanjing.A number of new high-speed railways are being built and will be finished in the coming few years, of which the Beijing-Shanghai line has a length of 1,318 km and a designed travel speed of 350 km/h. Construction of the line started in April 2008 and would finish in around five years. It would cut travel times between the two cities to only five hours from about 12 hours.High-speed trains wait for departure at Guangzhou south railway station in Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province, on Jan. 30, 2010.
