LIVONIA, Mich. — A racially offensive history lesson involving slavery has a Detroit mother outraged and calling out her daughter’s school. The parent Livonia, Michigan says she’s speaking out so no other child has to go through a similar situation. Now, the school is issuing a statement of its own.The lesson came during a seventh-grade social studies lesson at Frost Middle School in Livonia that left student Jade Holt disgusted. “It was weird and uncomfortable,” Jade said. She said her course on the history of slavery included a question that read: “A slave stands before you. This slave has disrespected his master by telling him you are not my master. How will you punish this slave?”“I read the question and typed my answer. It was, 'there will be no punishment because I do not believe in slavery,'” Jade said. “I never want my daughter to feel that way again, the way she felt this morning,” Jade's mother Jaala Holt said. She believes the teacher also isn’t the only one to blame. “Everything has to be approved before it’s given to the children. So, for whomever approved this inappropriate question for seventh graders, I find it asinine for me,” Jaala said.A school spokesperson released the statement below, which read, in part:“Concerns from a parent were brought to our attention this morning, and we have reviewed a social studies assignment given to three classes of our seventh-grade students. We recognize the assignment in question was not constructed appropriately, as we believe in the importance of approaching topics of slavery in any era of world history with the utmost care and consideration.”The principal hasn’t said if anyone has been disciplined. At a minimum, Jaala Holt wants teachers to undergo cultural sensitivity training. This story was originally published by WXYZ in Detroit. 1825

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Newly published research indicates there's an almost one-in-four chance the mountain lions living in the Santa Monica and Santa Ana mountains could become extinct in those areas within 50 years as a result of urban encroachment, inbreeding, vehicle strikes, rat poison and wildfire, it was reported today. In the face of such a dire prognosis, what biologists call an extinction vortex, conservationists are considering a desperate and controversial remedy: capturing pumas in one part of the Santa Anas and trucking them across the 15 Freeway so that they can breed with isolated mates on the other side of traffic."Wildlife managers never want to be a shuttle service for wild animals,'' said Justin Dellinger, senior environmental scientist with the Wildlife Investigations Laboratory at the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Los Angeles Times reported. But translocation has potential merit in the short term; after all it helped bring the critically endangered Florida panther back from the brink.Mountain lions are not endangered in California, but groups living in the Santa Monica and Santa Ana ranges now find themselves in genetic peril. Separated by freeways and lethal traffic, they are unable to range freely and are growing increasingly inbred, researchers say.In the Santa Monica Mountains, the 101 Freeway exists as a near impenetrable barrier to gene flow for a group of 10 mountain lions; in the Santa Ana Mountains, the 15 Freeway limits the movement of a family of 20 cougars.Sometimes, the animals manage to cross freeways without getting hit. At least seven cougars have crossed the 15 Freeway near Temecula in the last 15 years, and one sired 11 kittens. The fact that only one managed to reproduce, however, shows how difficult it is to diversify the gene pool in the lions still prowling the range.A population viability study published in the journal Ecological Applications predicts extinction probabilities of 16 to 28 percent over the next 50 years for these lions, which have the lowest genetic diversity documented for the specie aside from the critically endangered Florida panther.Study authors note also that wildfire and disease could result in "catastrophic mortality'' and further hasten the animals' disappearance. However, extinction probabilities were significantly reduced when computer models simulated the influence of two immigrant lions per year in areas blocked by development and freeways, according to a team of researchers that included Winston Vickers, an associate veterinarian at the UC Davis Karen C. Drayer Wildlife Health Center, and Seth Riley, an ecologist with the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, The Times reported. 2731

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The man accused of gunning down rapper Nipsey Hussle and injuring two other men in South Los Angeles pleaded not guilty Thursday. Eric Ronald Holder Jr., 29, was charged with one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon.Holder, an aspiring rapper, could face a potential life prison sentence if convicted as charged, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.RELATED: Man suspected of killing rapper Nipsey Hussle caught in Los AngelesHolder -- who was arrested Tuesday in Bellflower -- is accused of fatally shooting the 33-year-old rapper about 3:20 p.m. Sunday in front of The Marathon Clothing store the singer owned in the 3400 block of West Slauson Avenue in the Hyde Park area. Two other men were also wounded in the attack, Los Angeles police Chief Michel Moore said Holder got into some type of personal dispute with the rapper outside the store, then left and returned with a handgun. Hussle was shot in the head and body and died at a hospital, according to police and the coroner's office. The police chief declined to discuss the nature of the disagreement between Holder and Hussle but stressed the shooting appeared to be a result of that dispute, not any type of gang rivalry or feud.``We believe this to be a dispute between Mr. Hussle and Mr. Holder,'' Moore said. ``I'm not going to go into the conversations, but it appears to be a personal matter between the two of them.''Holder was arrested around 1 p.m. Tuesday in the 9000 block of Artesia Boulevard in Bellflower by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies after a witness called authorities to report seeing a person believed to be Holder. Sheriff's deputies detained him outside a mental health facility, and Los Angeles police officers went to the sheriff's Lakewood station and confirmed the man was indeed Holder.RELATED: Grammy-nominated rapper Nipsey Hussle dies in LA shootingA witness told the website The Blast that Holder had called a mental health facility and claimed he needed ``help.'' Law enforcement sources told TMZ.com that the LAPD was keeping Holder in solitary confinement, with authorities refusing to let him mingle with the general inmate population for fear that he'll be attacked. The sources said he'll remain in solitary once he's transferred to L.A. County Jail. Hussle's longtime girlfriend, actress Lauren London, broke her silence about the rapper's death Tuesday night, posting a message on Instagram along with a series of photos.``I am completely lost,'' she wrote in the poem-formatted message. ``I've lost my best friend/My sanctuary/My protector/My soul.../I'm lost without you/We are lost without you babe/I have no words.''London, known for her work on ``ATL'' and ``Entourage,'' had been with Hussle for about five years, and the couple had a 2-year-old son, Kross. Holder has a criminal record that includes a 2009 arrest and charge of domestic battery against the mother of his child, The Blast reported. RELATED: Nipsey Hussle shooting death: Community activists want Eric Holder getaway driver arrestedAccording to court records, Holder was ordered not to ``own, use or possess any dangerous or deadly weapons, including firearms, knives or other concealable weapons,'' The Blast reported. Hussle transformed himself from a South Los Angeles gang member to a rap musician and channeled his success into efforts to help others stay out of gangs. He bought shoes for students, re-paved basketball courts and provided jobs and shelter for the homeless.Hussle helped renovate a Mid-City roller rink and redeveloped the strip mall that housed his Marathon Clothing shop where he was fatally wounded.Community activist Najee Ali earlier Thursday called for the arrest of the woman who allegedly drove Holder away from the scene. The woman who drove the getaway car spoke with LAPD detectives Tuesday and was allowed to go free, apparently saying she was unaware of Holder's alleged role in the slaying, law enforcement sources told the celebrity news website TMZ.com. 4087
