A wallet-sized card with a picture of a young girl in West Michigan on the front may not mean much, but once flipped over the card’s intent is revealed.It asks people to pay it forward.“When we see the cards, we’re sad, but we’re happy because people look at the card and see our daughter,” said Cindi Rasmussen.Cindi and her husband, Mark, are the parents of the girl on the card.Her name is Molly.The parents describe the 16-year-old Forest Hills East student as fun-loving, social, and always on the go.“My favorite line of mine was, ‘When you finish what you’re doing, can you take me to Starbucks? Or can you take me to the gas station to get candy?’” Mark remembered.But this past June, everything stopped for the family.Molly died while swimming with a friend at Lake Bella Vista in Cannon Township. According to her parents, Molly was an epileptic and had a seizure in the water.“There’s not a day or a second that I don’t think about her,” said Mark.“That whole night was awful,” said Cindi.However, in the midst of their grief came Molly’s Cards, which encourage people to perform a small task, like opening a door or paying for coffee, in honor of the Grand Rapids native.Cindi says one of her former co-workers created Molly's Cards after Cindi asked people to pay it forward in lieu of sending more flowers to their family.The family estimates more than 1,000 Molly’s Cards have been distributed already. A prayer rally was held over the weekend for a 33-year-old man who died after being arrested by sheriff’s deputies in a Southern California grocery store.The man, Ernie Serrano, was at the store last Tuesday night in line to pay for his items. Sheriff’s deputies say when they arrived at the store, they saw Serrano tussling with a security guard and attempting to take the guard’s gun, according to a department press release.“While detaining Serrano, he continued fighting with the deputies and did not comply with their commands. At that time, a use of force occurred,” Sgt. Lionel Murphy with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department states in the release.Serrano was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. Deputies say Serrano then stopped breathing. "Medical personnel on scene rendered aid and was able to obtain a pulse. Serrano was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. While at the hospital, Serrano’s condition deteriorated, and he was later pronounced deceased," the department states. Serrano’s family disagrees on what happened in the store, and point to video shared on social media from a witness showing a deputy walk up to Serrano and beat him a few times with a baton before another deputy tackles him.The department said the use of force in Serrano’s arrest is under investigation at this time.The family is raising money for Serrano’s memorial services.Warning: the video may be difficult to watch and the post contains strong language. 1499

A new study out of Boston University has found depression in adults and teenagers has more than tripled since the pandemic started.According to researchers, symptoms of depression among Americans has increased from 8.5 percent pre-pandemic to 27.8 percent. It is a precipitous rise in an illness that can create a loss of enthusiasm, feelings of hopelessness, changes in diet, and changes in sleep patterns.“I feel like everyone is understanding what it’s like this year,” said Shane Weeks, a 26-year-old from Maine, who says he has been battling depression since he was 10. “Even people I feel like who have never faced depression or anxiety before are facing it now.”According to the American Psychiatric Association, symptoms of depression must last at least two weeks and must represent a change in one’s previous level of functioning for an official diagnosis.“I buy stuff so it’ll come in the mail, just so I have something to look forward to, said Weeks.“It’s just a total feeling of zero energy. [There is] hopelessness, utter hopelessness, and I don’t want to feel this way.”The study’s author, Catherine Ettman, says for many who are dealing with depression, understanding that others feel similarly can be empowering and comforting since symptoms of depression can feel isolating.“For those who may be feeling depressed during this time you are not alone,” she said. “I think this [study’s findings] calls for a doubling down in our social investment in supporting people through difficult economic times.”Researchers at BU found income can be a predictor of pandemic-induced depression. They found those with lower incomes were twice as likely to develop depressive symptoms, while those with less than ,000 in their savings were one and a half times more likely to experience symptoms of depression.“It’s just so hard not to be pessimistic because there’s rarely any good news,” said Weeks.For Weeks, that doubling down in mental health assistance is significant. He says in normal times he would find solace in international travel, as he’s been able to visit six continents in the last decade. However, now, he says he is left to his own devices.“You’re either going to wake up and it’s going to be the same exact thing that you experienced yesterday, or it feels like it’s going to be something even worse,” he said.Researchers from the study say the rise in depression from COVID-19 has been higher than that experienced after 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina. 2481

A recent study appears to show a person’s blood type might indicate whether they will develop severe respiratory failure if they contract COVID-19.The study sequenced genomes of 1,600 COVID-19 patients in Spain and Italy who had been hospitalized with severe respiratory failure and compared the results to DNA sequences of 2,205 healthy subjects.Results appear to show that people with type A blood had a higher chance of developing severe respiratory failure as compared to people with O blood type. The study claims there may be a “protective effect” for blood group O. However this study has not been peer-reviewed yet and the exact kind or extent of “protective effect” is not known.In early June, the site 23andme.com released results from information gathered from 750,000 participants who identified they had COVID-19. The genealogy company said their research suggests a similar effect in people with O blood type. “Individuals with O blood type are between 9-18% percent less likely than individuals with other blood types to have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the data,” a company statement said.They said while there was a significant difference in those with O blood type, there “appeared to be little differences in susceptibility among the other blood types.”However, some are questioning this idea that people with type O blood are protected. Laura Cooling is the director of immunohematology at the University of Michigan. She noted that the idea that having type O blood is protective doesn’t match with current COVID-19 infection rates.Type O blood is usually more prevalent among African Americans, according to the American Red Cross, yet new information from the CDC and states indicate African Americans have experienced disproportionately high COVID-19 infection rates. A Utah man is suing McDonald's and Coca-Cola's main bottler, Swire Coca-Cola, after he allegedly had his drink spiked at a McDonald's with the heroin substitute Suboxone.In a complaint filed in Utah's Third Judicial District Court, the plaintiff Trevor Walker alleges that his diet coke was spiked on Aug. 12, 2016, at a McDonald's drive-thru in Riverton, Utah.According to the complaint, Walker and his family went through the drive-thru, where they ordered two happy meals, two chicken sandwiches, and two Diet Cokes.Walker drank the beverage as he and his family went home, the complaint stated. While watching his children, Walker said that his fingers became non-responsive, and he began to lose feeling in his arms and legs."My life and being here is the biggest miracle of the whole situation," Walker told KTSU-TV in Utah. "As I started to shift my body, I started to sense almost like a lapse in time, like between the time I would move my hands there was a delay."The complaint said that during the incident, Walker sent the following text messages to his wife:Text No. 1: "Something is vey (sic) wrong with me. I am having sensations in my arms and everything is moving slowly. I'm feeling scared. I don't know what to do."Text No. 2: "I'm so scared I'm trying to be calm. I need you."Soon after sending the texts, the complaint alleges that Walker "blacked out," and fell onto a nearby table and collapsed onto the floor. Walker's wife came home, and he was taken to the emergency room.While at the hospital, the complaint stated that Walker's wife compared her Diet Coke to his, and noticed that his drink had, "speckles and a film on the surface—a fact that Trevor (Walker) was not aware of due to the lid placed by McDonald's on the drink."Walker's wife called the Unified Police Department and reported the suspicious drink. The plaintiff said that police responded to the hospital and took the drink for testing at the Utah State Crime Lab.The complaint said that the Utah State Crime Lab confirmed the drink contained a heroin substitute called buprenorphine or Suboxone. Walker's urine also tested positive for Buprenorphine."The drug negatively interacted with Mr. Walker's medication, causing him to lose feeling in his arms and legs, lose the ability to walk, and eventually lose consciousness," the complaint stated.McDonald's is accused in the complaint of failing to preserve the video recording of the drive-thru area where the alleged drink spiking took place, by deleting the video.Walker demanded a trial by jury in the complaint and sought relief for damages caused to him during the incident.The-CNN-Wire 2648
