SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In 2004, San Diego taxpayers approved a transportation tax increase that earmarked 0 million for bike projects for more bike lanes, safety features on the roads for cyclists and foot traffic, and new walking trails.Friday, SANDAG said it's going to need more. Officials said rising construction costs have called for an additional million for the projects, many of which have been started.The money would come from funds already allocated for these types of projects.RELATED: Compromise proposed for 30th Street bike lanes in North ParkCritics of the increase in funding argue only one percent of San Diegans use bikes and costs of .5 million per mile built for these bike lanes is unjustified.The San Diego Bike Coalition says the funding is needed to provide San Diegans with more transportation options, reduce auto dependency, and increase safety of bicyclists. They add that an expanded bike network will help the county move closer toward greenhouse emissions goals.SANDAG has been working toward the biking goals since 2013, when the agency approved a 0 million Bike Early Action Plan. The plan, funded by the region's half-cent tax on public transit fares, includes 40 projects totaling 77 new miles of bikeways and paths around the county.Crews broke ground on the first phase of the project last December and expects to complete two projects by early 2022. 1405

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Military families told 10News they are without heating and A/C due to mold in their air ducts.The families live in Tierrasanta and say housing came into their homes mid-October.Nancy Irvin has lived in the same home for six years with her military husband, 2-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter.She said problems with the home started day one, "the upstairs was leaking down from the tub to the garage so all of our stuff that was in boxes was flooding.""It's been sickness after sickness, cold, bronchitis, double ear infections everything," Irvin explained her children have been sick since they moved in and doctors haven't been able to tell them what's wrong."He's been coughing until he throws up at night," Irvin said while holding her crying toddler, Easton. She said even the dog developed a rash. She blames mold in their home.Mid-October Irvin said housing came in, tested for mold, removed her vents an taped over the holes. She said the lack of heating is keeping her children awake at night.She said a cleaning company came in to work on the vents but she wants more, "housing is doing nothing, they're not talking to anyone, they're not giving any information and it's just stressful."Neighbors said they are dealing with the same issues, posting photos of black fluffy mold in the air vents.In September, 10News reported on the Charvat family, who won a -million lawsuit against Lincoln Military Housing, saying mold also made their family sick at their home near the Marine Corps Recruitment Depot.Their lawsuit is in the middle of the appeals process. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It’s been nearly one year since the deadly University City poolside shooting. Kion Gould was hosting his 48th birthday party at his apartment complex. Right before the shooting began, Gould said he saw a man lying on a lounge chair by himself, so he invited him to join the festivities.That’s when the man, later identified as Peter Selis, pulled out his gun.The only thing Gould could do is raise his arm. His bone was miraculously able to stop the bullet.RELATED: Body camera footage captured during University City shooting released“I didn’t think it was a real threat until he basically raised the gun toward my head, that was the moment I realized I should have done something right before that, that’s the biggest thing that bothers me and bothers me to this day," said Gould.Police eventually shot and killed Selis after a shootout. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Local nurses are rallying for more protective equipment at our hospitals. 10News spoke with healthcare workers treating patients with coronavirus who say they're terrified for their own safety. ICU nurse, Michael Kennedy, describes what it's like on the front lines of Covid-19 at UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest. "As you can imagine it is kind of chaotic," said Kennedy. "We're basically having to beg for masks."He, like many other health care workers, is raising a sobering flag, saying they do not have enough face masks to protect themselves. Kennedy says they've been instructed to wear bandanas instead. USCD nurses held a rally to fight back against the shortage Friday morning. "We’re already rationing supplies and we are not getting the kind of transparency we need from UCSD, from state and local officials about what we have."It's a problem reported nationwide. The demand for personal protective equipment is soaring past supply. Here in San Diego, 10News has covered stories of the community coming together to fix that problem by donating supplies and even sewing together homemade masks. County Supervisor Greg Cox acknowledged the problem at a press conference Thursday. "We had a problem with the N95 masks that were in short supply," said Cox. Kennedy is now hoping the problem doesn't get even worse. "If we experience a surge tomorrow, would we have the kinds of things we need or would we be wearing trash bags?10News reached out to UCSD who provided the following statement from Michelle Brubaker, Associate Director of Communications and Media:"Currently, UC San Diego Health has sufficient supplies of personal protective equipment, including masks and respirators, to meet the needs for patients and health workers alike.But like all health systems across the region and country, we are pursuing every avenue to diversify and increase our supply and to ensure continuing, effective levels of protection, not just in the moment but for weeks and months to come. These efforts are based upon CDC and World Health Organization guidelines regarding PPE use and are in accordance with the California Department of Public Health, San Diego County Public Health and University of California.PPE is available to nurses for any potential COVID-19 patient. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Last month, investigators arrested a 72-year-old man suspected of being the Golden State Killer. It could be the dramatic end of a four decades old search for the suspect.Which got us thinking, whatever happened to the cold case of the “Geezer Bandit” who may not even be a senior citizen anyway? And, could advanced technology ever help find him?He was the most elusive senior citizen during a two-year crime spree. The bank robber the FBI nicknamed the “Geezer Bandit” because of his geriatric appearance.The “Geezer”, who may have been a much younger person using a professional grade prosthetic mask, robbed 16 banks from San Diego to San Luis Obispo from 2009 to 2011. 11 of those robberies happened in San Diego County. “Profiling as you understand now is a pretty big spectrum,” says Jack Hamlin.Hamlin is a Professor at National University and professional criminal profiler. We asked him how this person, seven years later, has become the modern-day D.B. Cooper and why he, or she, would simply vanish.“We have an expression in law enforcement, we only catch the dumb ones,” says Hamlin.The “Geezer” was one of the best. Performing almost mistake free and seemingly very sophisticated. The mask may not have been his only disguise, and he was said to wear gloves, there was no known getaway vehicle, the robberies were during off-peak hours and with little security. And five of his robberies were on a Friday, payday. So, we asked the question, ‘Is it possible this person had some law enforcement training?’“It’s certainly somebody that understands how things work,” added Hamlin.  “These robberies weren’t random. He’s figured out a time when security is low; he’s figured out a time when there’s going to be plenty of cash, Friday.”The “Geezer developed a cult following with thousands of followers on Facebook. T-shirts are still available celebrating ‘Geezer Bandit for President.’ But his last robbery was December of 2011. That's the only time a dye pack was used, exploding and making the money useless, and possibly his disguise too. We haven’t heard from the “Geezer” since.“I don’t see this person suddenly having an epiphany and saying, ‘It’s over with. I don’t need to do it anymore,’” says a skeptical Hamlin.Hamlin says people like this need the rush and rarely just quit. But the one mistake the “Geezer” made on that final robbery was dropping a day-planner which he carried as part of his disguise. If it holds his DNA, Hamlin says there may be an option to use a genealogy website like investigators did to catch the person they believe is the Golden State Killer.“Now you’ve got this public DNA base, and if there is some way they can tap into that, um, the skies the limit on some of these cases,” says Hamlin.UPDATE: The FBI tells 10News there has been no change in this case since the last attempted robbery in 2011.
