It's a hair care nightmare and women are blaming it on the Monat hair care product line."I took a picture of my hair, compared it to a picture of before I stared Monat, and my eyes just filled up with tears. It was so thin and it was stringy and I was just sick," said Erin Ostby, a military spouse who used and sold Monat products.Women like Ostby say they watched their hopes for beautiful, healthy hair wash down the drain after using Monat."It's devastating!" said Heather Fox, a customer in Phoenix."I had bald spots in the back of my hair," reported Amber Alabaster of Oklahoma City.Autumn Thomas, a mother in Canada, sent pictures of her 2-year-old son's abrupt and acute hair loss. She included a doctor's diagnosis tying it, as well as pain and redness on the scalp, directly to Monat shampoo.  Fox used it on her son too."And right away he had a reaction to his scalp. He had big, red, open sores throughout his scalp. It was really itchy." As a salesperson, Ostby is what the company calls a Market Partner.  "I have over 100 people in my downline -- customers and Market Partners. I reached up to my W-2 said five figures in those eight months in additional income. So realizing what was happening was a hard pill to swallow."Her decision to stop selling Monat didn't come easily."I was crying to my husband," she recalls. "I was vacuuming every day because I was losing so much hair. And I think I was in denial. I didn't want to believe it was the product."All three women say their Market Partners told them that it was a problem with them and they needed top go to their doctor."I had a full panel done, blood work, everything," Fox said."And there was nothing that pointed to a reason -- besides product use -- of why I lost my hair," Ostby said.They and consumers who complained online were told it was normal and part of a detox process documented in the company's own sales literature.  "We no longer do that. SEATTLE (AP) — Scientists say an orca who raised worldwide concern when she carried her dead calf for 17 days and more than 1,000 miles almost two years ago is pregnant. The Seattle Times reports Southall Environmental Associates scientist John Durban and marine mammal research director for the nonprofit SR3 Holly Fearnbach recently finished recording drone images of the endangered southern residents and discovered pregnancies amid the J, K, and L pods. According to SR3, whale pregnancies typically last 17-18 months.Pregnancies are not unusual but Tahlequah's pregnancy carries special meaning for a region that grieved the death of her calf along with her. The southern residents are struggling to survive, and most pregnancies are not successful.SR3 says the unsuccessful pregnancies are due to lack of food and nutrition and there are only 73 whales in population. 881

SEASIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A Central California teacher, who also serves as a reserve police officer, was placed on administrative leave after accidentally firing his gun inside a classroom.Seaside High School instructor Dennis Alexander was teaching a public safety course for an Administration of Justice class when his gun went off, according to KSBW."Alexander was believed to have been providing instruction related to public safety awareness," Seaside Police told the station.One student suffered non-major injuries and was taken to the hospital. According to the school district, Alexander was pointing his gun toward the ceiling when it went off.Alexander was also placed on administrative leave at the Sand City Police Department, KSBW reported."I have concerns about why he was displaying a loaded firearm in a classroom. We will be looking into that. My first concern was that no one was hurt," Sand City Police Chief Brian Ferrante told KSBW. 970

SAN TAN VALLEY, Ariz. — In-person schooling was supposed to begin Monday for the J. O. Combs School District, but a move by teachers and staff forced the district to cancel school for the day.On Friday, a J. O. Combs Spokesperson said 109 teachers and staff requested not to work on Monday."Due to these insufficient staffing levels, schools will not be able to re-open on Monday as planned. This means that all classes, including virtual learning, will be canceled," wrote J. O. Combs Superintendent Dr. Gregory Wyman in a letter to parents on Friday. "At this time, we do not know the duration of these staff absences, and cannot yet confirm when in-person instruction may resume."A teacher in the district said that one of the reasons teachers decided to call out Monday was that they felt unprepared to teach students virtually and in-person.Teachers are expected to simultaneously instruct students in the classroom and those at home via live stream. One teacher believes they were not adequately prepared to cater to both types of learners, since all of the educators' attention has been on executing online learning."The issue is that [a] teacher would not be able to tend to the online learners that are on Google," said a teacher in the district. "Even in-class learning must be modified for online. So it's a lose-lose for both types of learners."That teacher said only one hour of training was given for the live stream equipment."Some classes have as many as 36 [on] their roster or more. About half are choosing to stay home, so we really need to service our online learners."Aside from the feeling of unpreparedness from teachers, many feel unsafe since benchmarks set by the Arizona Department of Health Services have yet to be met by any of the school districts."My coworkers do not feel safe. Metrics being met is a big deal. SAN YSIDRO (KGTV)-- Activists for deported veterans are concerned as US Customs and Border Patrol agents call artists, asking them to paint over their work.On the Mexico side of Friendship Park, inside Friendship Circle, an upside-down American flag with white crosses for stars, stands as a reminder, bringing awareness to deported veterans and the difficulty they face."It's like an SOS in the military if you're being overrun by the enemy, and part of that was you know, we need help," Advocate Hector Barajas said."I think veterans should do their time, or should receive some kind of treatment instead of getting deported, you know if you get in trouble," he said. Barajas said the veterans who were deported were convicted of a crime and not citizens of the U.S. Back in the days of the Vietnam War, Barajas said the U.S. took anyone who was willing to fight.In Tijuana, Barajas not only co-founded the mural in 2013, he's helped 375 deported veterans in Mexico, from 40 different countries. His shelter and resource center, Deported Veterans Support House, provides food, clothing and shelter, as they transition to life in Mexico.Barajas?was a deported veteran himself, and seeing that flag gave him hope.On the other side of the flag are names of deported veterans, some have "RIP" painted next to their names.Instead of stars, the flag has white crosses. "The crosses of people who made the sacrifice for others to seek the American dream but we've also had others who have died on this side of the border," Barajas said.That part of the mural is what US Customs and Border Patrol is focusing on, according to Barajas, "they asked me if I could paint it to paint away the stars so it didn't look like an American flag."US Customs and Border Patrol released this statement:Barajas told the agent he doesn't maintain the mural and washed his hands of the issue.
