SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego's 73rd City Council was sworn in Thursday morning alongside new Mayor Todd Gloria, bringing a Democratic supermajority to the council chambers.Departing councilmembers Georgette Gomez, Barbara Bry, Chris Ward, Mark Kersey and Scott Sherman offered thanks to the citizens of San Diego and words of advice to incoming councilmembers Joe LaCava, Stephen Whitburn, Marni von Wilpert, Raul Campillo and Sean Elo-Rivera as the city faces one of the most tumultuous periods in its history.The 73rd City Council must contend with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and all the physical, economic and budgetary issues it presents the city. Other major items before the council, which now sits at an 8-1 Democrat advantage, include the city's Climate Action Plan and battling climate change, homelessness and rising housing prices, the cleanup of the Tijuana River Basin, social and racial justice and large-scale projects such as Pure Water.A visibly emotional Gomez thanked her family, wife and supporters for a brief but significant four-year term representing the city's District 9. Her tenure, including the last two years as Council President, saw a citywide focus on climate change, racial justice and infrastructure projects.Her replacement, Elo-Rivera, said he would continue radical reform to better the city. He drew issue with the description of the many problems caused by COVID-19 as "unprecedented.""For too many San Diegan families, the challenges presented by COVID- 19 are not unprecedented but all too typical," he said. "We must not go back to normal. Normal is not good enough."Bry, a candidate for mayor against Gloria, said she was proud of her four years representing District 1 and that she would continue to "demand accountability," from city government. She pointed to the 101 Ash Street real estate deal and the failed Soccer City proposal as examples where she blew the whistle about backroom deals.Her replacement, LaCava, said his engineering background would continue Bry's policy of no-nonsense straight talk. He hoped to work with all city departments to survive the pandemic."Successful navigation of these uncertain pandemic waters will take all of us working together," he said.District 3's Whitburn thanked his predecessor, now-Assemblyman Chris Ward, for continuing to "break the rainbow ceiling." He was sworn in by former Councilwoman Christine Kehoe -- the first openly LGBT person elected to office in San Diego County in 1993 -- and all LGBT former District 3 councilmembers were in attendance. This included Kehoe, Senate President Pro Tempore Toni Atkins, Gloria, Ward and now Whitburn himself.He said he wanted to move forward with the city into a new era."We need to advance past the us versus them mentality," that he said plagued politics around the country but especially in San Diego.Von Wilpert took over from Mark Kersey in District 5 and said she was dedicated to empowering justice throughout the city. She said action must be swift and decisive on how to tackle COVID-19."With a vaccine on the verge, hope is on the horizon," she said, adding the importance of bipartisanship. "We must reject anger and division."In District 7, former Councilman Scott Sherman said he stuck to his guns and didn't sell out to special interests.He reminded his former colleagues and the new elected officials of their responsibility."It's not your money," Sherman said. "We are stewards of the taxpayers' money."His replacement, Campillo, said although he comes from a different political party than Sherman, all the members of the council serve their constituents."We must not let the past impede us," he said. "San Diego has more young people, more diversity, but more to fix than ever."Later in the afternoon, the council selected Jennifer Campbell, who represents District 2, as its president. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego State's scheduled football game Friday at Fresno State was canceled Sunday due to COVID-19 contact tracing within the Bulldogs' program.The Mountain West Conference is declaring the game a no contest, and has no plans to reschedule it, conference officials said Sunday.The Aztecs (3-2), who were coming off a 26-21 loss at undefeated Nevada on Saturday, will now hold onto the Old Oil Can trophy for another year after beating Fresno State, 17-7, last season in San Diego.The Bulldogs (3-1) had their planned game Saturday against San Jose State canceled on Friday, also due to COVID-19 contact tracing within the Bulldogs program."We are disappointed about the game on Friday being canceled due to COVID issues but the health and safety of our student-athletes is most important," SDSU athletic director John David Wicker said. "We will actively search for a game this weekend because our coaches, student-athletes and staff want to play."We have reached out to the conference office and the Pac-12 that we are actively looking for a game. We will have to see how testing goes this week for all of the schools in our conference and the Pac-12."Fresno State athletic director Terry Tumey said "in partnership with Mountain West Conference leadership and the leadership at San Diego State, we explored every alternative solution we could identify in order to play the game on its scheduled weekend. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police Thursday were searching for a suspect who carjacked a 56-year-old man while he was listening to music in a City Heights parking lot.It happened around 9:35 p.m. Wednesday in a parking lot near the intersection of Euclid and University avenues, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said.The victim was listening to music in his red 2013 Nissan Versa sedan when a man walked up to the car, lifted his shirt up and showed that he had a gun in his waistband, Heims said. The suspect then told the 56-year-old man to get out of the car, and the victim complied.The suspect got into the Nissan, which had California license plate 7EKT818, and drove off southbound on Euclid Avenue, the officer said.The suspect was described as a 5-foot-11 Hispanic man in his early 20s who weighed between 150 and 180 pounds. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials have reported 306 newly confirmed cases Sunday and no additional deaths from COVID- 19, bringing the county's totals to 29,883 cases and holding the death toll at 565.No new community outbreaks of COVID-19 were identified Saturday. In the past seven days, 37 community outbreaks were confirmed.Of the 5,655 tests reported Saturday, 5% were positive. The 14-day rolling average percentage of positive cases is 5.3%. The state's target is fewer than 8% of tests returning positive.Of the total positive cases, 2,577 -- or 8.6% -- required hospitalization and 652 -- or 2.2% -- were admitted to an intensive care unit.According to county data, 57% of adult San Diego County residents have underlying medical conditions such as high blood pressure, heart and lung disease, cancer, diabetes and obesity. These conditions put such people at higher risk for serious illness should they contract COVID-19.Of the total hospitalized during the pandemic due to the illness, 71% have been 50 or older. The highest age group testing positive for the illness are those 20-29, and that group is also least likely to take precautionary measures to avoid spreading the illness, a county statement said."Some San Diegans think they're not going to get sick and therefore are not following the public health guidance," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "What they don't realize is that they could get infected and pass the virus to others who are vulnerable."An amendment to the county's public health order, which went into effect Wednesday morning, now requires all employers to inform employees of any COVID-19 outbreaks or cases at a place of business. "Lives have been destroyed because of failed leadership. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The FBI reached out to the public Wednesday for help in tracking down a man who faces federal charges for allegedly operating San Diego-based pornographic websites that recruited young women and at least one teenage girl to engage in commercial sex acts by force, fraud and coercion.The federal agency has posted a reward of up to ,000 for information leading to the arrest of 37-year-old Michael James Pratt, who co-owned and ran online sites called "Girls Do Porn" and "Girls Do Toys."An indictment unsealed last fall alleges that Pratt also produced pornographic content involving a 16-year-old girl.Pratt and his co-defendants allegedly videotaped sex acts under the guise of distributing the footage only to private clients, then disseminated the clips online without the victims' knowledge or consent.In January, a judge awarded about million to nearly two dozen women who sued the owners and operators of GirlsDoPorn.com.
